Campus Administrator ~ Kari Kusek

As we move further into the fall semester, I want to take a moment to celebrate the many ways our students are demonstrating excellence both inside and outside of the classroom. Their commitment, effort, and enthusiasm continue to make us proud.

First, I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to our Track Team and Coaches on an incredible season. Their hard work and determination culminated in a phenomenal showing at the District Track Meet! Our athletes not only achieved remarkable performances on the track but also represented our school with pride, sportsmanship, and resilience. These qualities exemplify the spirit of our Wildcat community and set a strong example for all of us.

As we close the track season, we are equally excited to begin a new chapter with the start of 7th and 8th grade Boys Basketball. We look forward to watching these student-athletes grow as teams, and we are eager to see the 6th grade season begin in a few short weeks. Athletics provide an important opportunity for students to show their C.A.R.E. values, and we are excited to see our athletes thrive!

Beyond athletics, our other extracurricular programs are thriving. The Fall Play is already off to a smooth and promising start, with students dedicating their time and talent to bringing a meaningful production to life. Various clubs and activities have also kicked off, giving students a wide range of opportunities to connect with peers, explore new interests, and contribute to our vibrant school culture.

It is truly inspiring to witness the many ways our students are engaging in our community. Their involvement reflects not only their individual passions but also our shared values of community, achievement, respect, and equity. Thank you to our families, staff, and community members for your ongoing support, which makes these opportunities possible. Go Wildcats!

COUNSELING OFFICE COUNSELING OFFICE

It’s hard to believe that we are closing in on the end of Quarter 1 and students will be receiving their grades in three short weeks! For many students, this will mark the end of unit tests and cumulative projects in preparation for new academic challenges in Q2. Communication with your teacher is an essential part of your middle school journey, and it’s never too late to talk through a tough assignment or revisit a test that didn’t go as planned. Who knows, maybe your conversation will lead to an opportunity to redo an assignment or to make test corrections for additional points! Below are some helpful suggestions when talking with a teacher and your Counselor can help facilitate the conversation if you want!

General tips for talking to a teacher

  • Be polite and respectful. Use "please," "thank you," and "I" statements.
  • Be specific. State what you need help with or what you'd like to discuss.
  • Be proactive. Talk to your teacher as soon as you start struggling, not right before a big test.
  • Respect their time. Ask if they have a moment to talk, and don't ambush them in the middle of class or in the hallway.
  • Listen actively. Pay attention to what your teacher is saying and ask clarifying questions.
  • Be prepared. Bring any relevant assignments or notes to the conversation.
  • Take responsibility. Acknowledge your role in the situation and avoid blaming the teacher.
  • Follow up. Put into practice what you and your teacher discussed and show them that you're committed to improving.

Talking about grades

  • "I'm struggling with [subject/topic]. Could we talk about it during your office hours or after school?"
  • "I'd like to talk about my grade in [subject]. I've noticed it's [low/different than expected], and I'd like to understand why so I can improve."
  • "I was wondering if we could go over my last test/paper together so I can see what I can improve on."
  • "I know my grade in this class isn't where I want it to be, but I'm committed to bringing it up. What steps would you recommend?"
  • "I'm concerned about my progress in [subject]. Can we talk about a plan for how I can do better?"
  • "I've been reviewing the material, but I'm still not doing as well on assignments as I'd hoped. Do you have any suggestions?"

PTCO PTCO

The PTCO extends a big thank you to Allison Kampstra for her hard work in launching the new WestWear Store! Orders will arrive in mid October and will be delivered to your child’s Advisory teacher.

We also want to recognize Katie Rasmussen and Jessica Sebold for organizing another successful Wildcat Challenge. Thanks to their efforts—and your support—the funds raised will begin fueling classroom grants as early as next month!

Finally, we’d love your input! To better understand what parents, guardians, and students would like to see in Character Development at West, we’ve created a short survey. Please take a moment to share your thoughts here: Survey Link.

RIDING THE BUS RIDING THE BUS

Transportation is required by CDE Regulations to account for all students on the bus and unauthorized passengers are not permitted. However, the Transportation Department recognizes that circumstances may arise, e.g. a family emergency, parents out of town, etc., when a student needs to ride home with another student on a one-time only basis. The student must get off at the assigned stop of the student they are riding with (no exceptions).

Make sure to fill out and turn in the linked Permission Slip to the Campus Admins office no later than 9:00 AM on the requested ride date. Forms can be printed and handed to the Campus Admins Assistant. Hard copies of the form can be picked up from the Campus Admins office if they are needed but must be picked up prior to the day they need to ride a different bus. No emails will be accepted. If there is an emergency, please call the Campus Admins office at 720-554-5155.
