Little Pearls Learning Update

What another busy month in Little Pearls Nursery, have had enjoyed so many things this last month, with the highlight so many of the children have told me today being - playing and spending time together!

It was lovely to see so many parents at parents evening, we love to share each childs progress and early years journey with you, they all make us so proud.

A recap of what we have learnt about throughout this last month:

Week 5 - This week, our focus in nursery is on 'Our healthy bodies and movement'

We celebrated 'Healthy heart day' and learnt where our hearts are and what their job is. We found where our hearts were, and after lots of exercise, we could feel them beating! ❤️

Little Pearls loved joining their big reception and year 1 friends for their PE lesson with Jordan on the field and they displayed some amazing listening skills aswell as running, jumping, and even hopping!

We have enjoyed experimenting with different ways we can move and have had lots of fun on our climbing apparatus, as well as remembering to rest and relax, exploring some calming yoga poses.

Week 6 - This week we have been learning all about our 5 senses. We have had different areas in our provision for them to explore through each different sense. The children have been busy making sound jars, using fine motor skills to post in different objects to make their noisy instruments. We made some scented playdough together on the field, using different spices and herbs. The children have explored through their sight using magnifying glasses, and different colours glasses to look through, as well as hunting for hidden objects in the sand and the paint bags. We made different textured pictures as well as going on a fun sensory bear hunt walk, using our feet to feel the different objects. And finally (our favourite) - we enjoyed food tasting, whilst making our very own delicious pizzas.

Week 7 - This week we have been focusing on 'Sharing and taking turns' we are so impressed with how well our Little superstars are doing with taking turns, especially when we have exciting new toys and experiences that we're all eager to have a go at! This week we have enjoyed playing games with our friends, that required teamwork, patience and listening skills.

Week 8 - This final week of term we have been busy finishing learning 'All about our bodies' with lots of skeleton activities, naming different parts of our bodies, which then linked perfectly to our Halloween celebrations. This week we have enjoyed our trip to go pumpkin picking, exploring inside a pumpkin, pumpkin bowling and testing our counting skills, making, and mixing some fabulous potions and celebrating together with a spooktastic arty!

We hope you have a wonderful half term and look forward to seeing you in November for another fun filled time with Bonfire night activities and our exciting run up to Christmas!! (Which in nursery we think is the most exciting time of the year!)

Pearls

We’ve had such an exciting and creative week in class to finish off the term in style! The children have been busy learning, exploring, and showing off their amazing imaginations.

🍁 Pumpkin Picking Fun
We enjoyed a wonderful trip to Scalby Grange! Everyone loved choosing their own pumpkins and learning about how they grow. It was a great start to celebrating Halloween and getting into the autumn spirit together!

🕸️ Halloween Pom Poms
Back in class, we got crafty making spooky Halloween pom poms. The children showed fantastic focus and creativity—our classroom is now full of festive decorations!

🖼️ Designing Photo Frames in DT
In Design and Technology, we designed and created our very own photo frames. The children thought carefully about their designs and worked hard to construct and decorate their frames beautifully. We look forward to displaying the frames on our topic display after half term.

🏡 Magical Homes in Drawing Club
In Drawing Club, we used our imaginations to create magical homes! The children wrote wonderful sentences to describe their creations, using their phonics sounds to help them spell and write with confidence. We have really enjoyed our new approach this half-term and look forward to developing our early writing skills further when we return in November.

🧍‍♀️ Learning About Our Bodies in Science
In Science, we’ve been learning all about the human body! We named different body parts, drew our own bodies, and worked together to put the parts in the right places to make a complete human body. The children loved exploring how our bodies work and how amazing they are!

🐿️ Developing Our Fine Motor Skills
In provision, we’ve been working hard to strengthen our fine motor skills. The children have been sorting animals and colours, as well as using conkers to sort and count numbers. These activities help build coordination, control, and confidence in their hands and fingers—super important for writing and other skills!

🔤 Working Hard in Phonics
We’ve also been working really hard in our phonics sessions. The children have been learning new sounds and applying them in their spellings. It’s wonderful to see their growing confidence in reading and writing!

It’s been a busy half term, full of fun, learning, and creativity—well done, everyone! 🌟

📅 Looking Ahead

We look forward to welcoming you to our Phonics Workshop on Thursday 13th November at 9:00am.
You’ll have the chance to watch your child’s phonics session in action and see how we teach new sounds and spelling strategies. We can’t wait to share this special part of our learning with you!

Rubies

Rubies have continued to amaze the Year 2 team and we are so proud of them. As the first term in Year 2 draws to a close, the progress made by all students has been incredible. It has been great for us too really see their personalities come out and shine through this term.

We have continued to enjoy our new phonics scheme using Little Wandle. The children are becoming increasingly confident at using their segmenting fingers to blend, and applying their phonics knowledge during their reading sessions. We can see that the children are trying incredibly hard to apply their phonics knowledge to their writing.

In English we have carried on reading our book for this term which is The owl who was afraid of the dark. I can tell the children have loved this story, through their enthusiastic approach to all English lessons. It has been great to see the children use their creativity and imagination when writing an innovated version of the story. They have used their knowledge of the story, changed one aspect and written a narrative based on their choices. We have been so impressed with their ambitious vocabulary!

In maths we have been focusing on addition and subtraction. We have recalled knowledge from Year 1 of our number bonds to 10 and 20. Then the children have applied these skills when partitioning numbers to help us add and subtract. The children have had great determination when exploring some tricky maths skills like adding and subtracting 2 two digits numbers across a ten. We learnt to exchange, and the children have done a great job at this.

Continuing with our topic of Our Local Area, the children have worked at recalling the countries of the UK a long with their capital cities. We looked at the surrounding seas of the UK and what other countries they are connected with. After half term the children will explore the local area of Swinefleet and be able to recognize landmarks and create a map using a key.

The children have loved our science topic this half term of Animals including humans. They have been able to accurately recall the animal groups, and how to recognise them with by their features and characteristics. Recently, the children really enjoyed learning about how exercise is important for humans, and they took part in an experiment where they completed a range of different exercises and discussed how it made their heart beat and breathing faster and how it made them feel.

As well as this, last week, the children got the chance to take part in the careers fair organized by Mrs. Wilde. It was great to see the children take interest in a wide range of different careers, from scientist to police officers and even a waste officer from Biffa. The feedback from the children was overwhelming and it was clear to see they have a fantastic time!

In PE we have continued enhancing their running skills. They have been working with Beth from Hull FC, and have been great at working as a team and making sure every game or race is done fairly.

The Year 2 team are over the moon with how the first term has gone, and the progress the children have made is unmatched. They show great enthusiasm to all their learning, and we are so proud of them! Have a lovely half term, and well done to our Rubies!

Diamonds

We’ve had a busy October in Diamonds class!

In English lessons we have been researching key facts about the stone age, using non-fiction books and websites. We have used all the information to write a non-chronological report. We have including information about homes, weapons and tools they used and the foods they ate during this period. We then learnt about ‘How to make campfire?’ and we have written our own instructions on how to do this safely!

In Maths, we have finished off our ‘Place Value’ unit, we have learnt how to round numbers to the nearest 10,100 and 1000. We have also been learning how to write Roman Numerals, we have all enjoyed this, although it can get a little confusing at times! This week we have been learning how to add 3- and 4-digit numbers using column addition, after half term we will be learning how to subtract numbers using column subtraction.

We have been continuing to learn about Rock and Soils in science lessons. We have examined soil to see what it is made up of and we have put soil samples in water to get a closer look, we all enjoyed getting messy! We have also learnt about the fossilisation process and Mary Anning.

On Wednesday 8th October, we had a Stone Age Workshop in School, we learnt what a ‘coprolite’ is (a fossilised poo!) which we all found very amusing! We examined our own coprolites to find out which period of the stone age the person lived in (Please don’t worry our coprolites were a mixture of playdough with cocoa powder for colour!) We sorted stone age artefacts into those from the early stone age, those from the bronze age and those found in the iron age. Then we mixed our own powder paint and painted our own stone age tile, similar to cave painting! We had a very enjoyable morning, and we learnt about what life was like in the stone age, bronze age and iron age.

Please all enjoy a well-earned rest this half term, we have had a very enjoyable, very busy and very productive half term!

Sapphires

What an exciting and action-packed October it has been for Sapphires Class! We’ve packed so much into this term already, and we’re thrilled to share just some of the highlights with you.

In English and guided reading, we’ve enjoyed exploring Secrets of the Sun King, which led to thoughtful book reviews and in-depth character descriptions. The children have developed their writing by focusing on skills such as expanded noun phrases and relative clauses. We also studied the poem The Highwayman, analysing metaphors and creating wanted posters. The class brought the poem to life through drama and freeze-framing activities, helping them connect with the text.

Maths lessons this term have included work on rounding, negative numbers, as well as exploring multiples, factors, prime numbers, and square and cube numbers. One particularly memorable lesson saw the children build a huge cube from multilink cubes to help them visualise and understand cube numbers in a hands-on way.

In science, we’ve been learning about naturalists and the seven life processes in animals and humans. The children created fact files and have shown great curiosity about the world around them. Our visit from Drax included a fascinating morning focused on reversible and irreversible changes, linking perfectly to our science studies.

In RE, we’ve compared places of worship, studied symbolism, and learned about celebrations from different religions, fostering empathy and understanding. Our PE sessions have focused on tag rugby, where teamwork and strategy were key elements of success.

In PSHE, the children showed creativity and collaboration as they designed and created their own board games. We also took time to reflect on wellbeing during World Mental Health Day by wearing yellow and enjoying chocolate meditation.

Our history topic on Ancient Egypt has been a real hit. The class have created their own gods, studied well-known pharaohs, and discussed the end of the civilisation. They also presented PowerPoints on Ancient Egypt and made their own zines on a topic of personal interest, showcasing their independent research and creativity. We can’t wait for our exhibition in November.

We’ve also had some wonderful whole-school events this term. Our trip to Drax and the Skylark Centre gave us a brilliant opportunity to see science in action. The Harvest Festival was a lovely occasion, and we were proud to see all of our Year 6s speaking so confidently. As a reward for their fantastic reading, the children created Halloween decorations and decorated biscuits. Last Friday, they celebrated Golden Time by wearing Halloween costumes and enjoying a party in the afternoon.

It’s been a pleasure to meet so many of you during Parents’ Evening, and we thank you for your continued support. The Careers Fair was another standout moment, inspiring the children to think ahead about their aspirations and future paths.

As we move into the second half of the term, there’s even more to look forward to. We’re excited about the upcoming cinema trip, our Christmas visit, and of course, lots of Christmassy fun to end the term. Thank you once again for your continued support. It’s been a brilliant half term and we can’t wait to see you all back in school on Monday 3rd November.

Relationships Support from East Riding

We know that conflict is a normal part of relationships, and we also know that it's not conflict that is the problem, but how we deal with it.

Evidence shows that ongoing, poorly-resolved conflict can have a damaging effect on children’s well-being and happiness. The Relationship Matters website provides tips and support local to you and within the site, there are some great tools, such as the Amity's Little Book of Relationship Care, and links to a broad range of websites, including Mind, and the One Plus One site, which supports separating parents to handle arguments better.

There is also Separating Better, a useful app for families going through separation.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council - Relationship Matters

What is RPC? Parental conflict: the impact on children - YouTube Reducing parental conflict: why it matters to children and why it matters to services - YouTube Definition from the DWP: Conflict between parents is normal, but if exposure is frequent, intense, and poorly resolved, this can have a damaging impact on children, resulting in long-term mental health issues and emotional, social, behavioural, and academic problems as they grow up.
