Welcome back from Principal Rose
Hello Eckstein Families,
Welcome to the 2026-2027 school year!
I hope this newsletter finds you and your family well and that you have had a wonderful summer. We are looking forward to welcoming our Eckstein Eagles back to school.
I would like to extend a special welcome to our new families joining our Eckstein community. We are glad you are with us for your student’s middle school journey!
We ask that you thoroughly read this back-to-school newsletter. We send our weekly school information on Fridays through this “Smore” format, as it provides opportunity for translation for our families. We hope the many questions you have as we embark on the new school year are integrated into this publication. Please reach out with additional questions you have.
I am fortunate to lead the most amazing community of students, educators and families.
It is a great honor to be your Principal.
Sincerely,
Principal
WEB Day for Incoming Sixth Graders
Tuesday – September 1, 2026
2–4 p.m.
We are very excited to welcome our newest Eagles, the incoming 6th grade class, to Eckstein Middle School!
The transition from elementary to middle school can be filled with many different emotions. We hope to ease this transition by inviting your student to Eckstein on Tuesday, September 1 from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. for our WEB program.
Where Everyone Belongs!
- Orientation and transition program to welcome our new 6th grade students.
- Community building activities.
- Meet fellow sixth graders.
- Tour the building.
- Much, much more!
Drop off 6th grade students on the west side of the school and walk up the stairs on 30th Ave NE by 2 p.m. We will have WEB leaders and signs to direct students. Pick up your 6th grader at the same spot on 30 Ave at 4 p.m.
Our accessible drop-off location is behind the school just to the left of the loading dock. To access, please turn right into the alley on the far east end of school off of NE 75th Street. Once you enter the gate, turn right. The loading dock will be straight in front of you. Upon entering the school, turn left and follow signs to the gymnasium.
PTSA board members will be at the pick-up for the September 1st WEB Day at 4 p.m. to share information about Eckstein with parents and caregivers. Join them for connections with incoming students and families!
**The event is for incoming 6th grade students only. No parents, guardians, or siblings for this event.
Students will receive a hard copy of their class schedule on WEB day.
We know that many families have plans in the final days before school starts and cannot attend WEB due to prior commitments. If this is the case for your student, please do not worry. The first day of school we repeat welcoming activities, provide tours of the school, and get our students well situated before they start moving to their various classes. Please rest assured that they will be well taken care of!
Welcome Event for New to Eckstein 7th & 8th Grade Students: September 1 1-2 p.m.
Notes from the Nurse
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back! I hope you have all had a great summer and are ready to begin the year. I am very excited to see all the students.
There are few things I need to be ready for your child this year.
Immunizations
Please make sure that your child is up to date with all the required immunizations for school. You will receive a letter from the district office if a student is deficient in any of the required immunizations. This website is sponsored by the Washington Department of Health and comes in very handy for providing immunization proof for sports, clubs, etc. You can also check to see if there is anything that needs to be completed before the end of summer.
Medications
If your child will need daily medication that will be given at school I will need the Authorization for Medications Taken At School Form signed by both you And his/her physician/provider.
If your child has emergency medication(s) (ie, epinephrine, albuterol, midazolam) that may need to be given at school, I will need the Medication(s) Order Form and Assessment form specific to their condition (scroll down to “Health Conditions” medication authorization form ) signed by both you And his/her physician/provider. (I have already reached out to the families of students currently attending, so this is primary for incoming 6th graders and students with new conditions)
Please make sure the physician/provider has Completely filled out their section. I must have this form for all medications by the first day of school. All medication must come in its original package, not individual pills. It must have your child’s name clearly written on the box/prescription, and the dosage and administration instructions on the printed pharmacy label must match those on the medication authorization form. If at all possible, please provide medication(s) that do not expire during the school year.
You are welcome to drop medications off with the front desk staff during their summer hours. Just make sure to call ahead at 206.252.5010 to check because there are many days staff is in the building, but in training/meetings and unavailable.
I will be at the school on the September 1, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and available for drop-ins at any time.
Emergency Contact/Communication
Please make sure to have your emergency contact information up to date (sent home first week of school and an online update request will also be sent from SPS) in case I need to call due to illness and the need to return home. I will start with parents/guardians and then will go down your list. I also often use TalkingPoints for non-emergent communication. It is available in the App Store as “Families TalkingPoints.”
I look forward to working with you and your child this school year. I work Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and Wednesday 8:30 a.m/–2:45 p.m.
Enjoy the remaining days of summer break.

Registrar Information
Important Reminders:
- As we near the end of the summer, availability in our electives and courses is extremely limited. Due to budget constraints, reduced FTE, and carrying 50 students over enrollment projections, your student may be placed into an elective that they requested as an alternate or did not request at all. This is to ensure that all students have a full schedule. More so than previous years, changes to schedules will only be reviewed for critical changes such as core class errors and approved by our school leadership. Changes to be with friends, teacher preferences, or to be in a specific lunch are not appropriate reasons for change.
- This is an extremely busy time of year, and Ms. Tai cannot respond to individual requests for elective changes or requests at this time. There will be an opportunity to request elective changes in September, pending availability and space. Please see last bullet.
- If you are a rising new to Eckstein 8th grader, please send Ms. Tai an email jetai@seattleschools.org with a list of topics covered in your student’s 7th grade math course and ideally an official transcript. Your rising 8th grader may be placed into Math 8 (grade-level math) or Algebra 1 (high school level credit). To be placed into Algebra 1, Ms. Tai must verify 7th grade math covered and receive approval from our math faculty. This is a district policy.
- Math 7/8 placements were done in last spring for students in 7th grade who requested to be in Math 7/8 and for incoming 6th graders approved to be in Math 7/8 by Highly Capable Services.
- Spanish 1 and French 1 are currently full. If you’d like to be on a waitlist, please email Ms. Tai.
- You can read more about Eckstein’s electives on the Eckstein Registrar Courses and Electives website. Please bookmark the Eckstein Registrar’s site. Ms. Tai regularly posts information online.
2026-2027 Schedules
- Your student’s full schedule for the 2026-2027 school year can be viewed in the Source on September 1. Your student will receive a hard copy on the first day school on September 2.
- Please be advised that if you can see your student’s schedule prior to September 1, it is not final and cannot be relied upon.
- The process to request schedule changes will remain the same as last school year:
- First week of school will be prioritized for students who are new to Eckstein and do not have schedules and for students with errors in their core classes.
- Second week of school: Ms. Tai will provide details on how to request changes to your student’s electives. This is pending availability and is not guaranteed.
First Day of School Procedures
- Please encourage your student to bring their school supplies on the first day of school, including water bottles. Please refer to the school supply list below. If your family needs assistance with school supplies please contact our Social Worker, Erica Davenport, at esdavenport@seattleschools.org. We are happy to help!
- Eckstein encourages people powered transportation to and from school. New SDOT bike infrastructure along 75th offers safer routes for cycling to school to our covered bike cage. Walking is also encouraged. Both walking and biking offer multiple benefits to students and the environment, not to mention reduce significant drop off and pick up traffic and car congestion in the neighborhood. More information about safe routes to school. For information at Eckstein contact Jessica Levine @Levine, Jessica C and to volunteer with our events, initiatives, and activities contact Parent lead @Scott Musgrove.
- Parent car drop off and pick up of students is on NE 75th Street, right in front of the school. Please pull forward as far as you can to accommodate more vehicles. Drivers are asked not to exit their vehicles during drop off or pick up in order to maximize safety for students and smooth operations. Also please be sure not to block the bike lane.
- Our accessible drop-off location is behind the school, just to the left of the loading dock, through the double doors. To access, please turn right into the alley on the far east end of school, off of NE 75th street. Once you enter the gate, turn right. The loading dock will be straight in front of you. Upon entering the school through the double doors, turn right to find the front hall.
- Students taking yellow school bus transportation will be dropped off at the parking lot on 30th. They will also catch the bus in the same place in the afternoon.
7th and 8th graders - First Day of School Report to homeroom at 8:50 a.m.. Final bell rings at 8:55 a.m..
- Before the First Day of School students can find their homeroom teachers by logging onto the Source. Schedules will be live on the Source on Tuesday, September 1.
- If students do not know their homeroom before arriving at school on the first day, they will find postings of homeroom assignments in each of the front entrance hallways of Eckstein.
- Students should report to their homeroom teacher promptly after the first bell at 8:50am.
6th graders - First day of school: Pick up nametag with Home Room assignment in front of the school, then report to the Auditorium.
- At the front of the school on NE 75th Street to the left of the front doors on the large grassy area, 6th graders will identify their homeroom teachers by obtaining a nametag from a table which will have their homeroom teacher listed on it.
- They will then enter the building from the front doors on NE 75th Street, and walk straight into the Auditorium, located directly inside the doors, where they will look for their homeroom teacher holding a large sign. They will then sit with their homeroom class.
- We will take it from there as we provide a warm welcome and orient our Eckstein Eagles to middle school!
- Parents and guardians will be invited to join the PTSA in the garden behind school for coffee and connection.

Lunch seating options
SPS Cellphone Policy
The SPS cellphone policy is that students must have their cellphones powered off and away for the day inclusive of lunch and all passing periods. Smartwatches are only to be used to check the time.
Cellphones must now be turned off and zipped in backpacks (not pockets) all day.
The best move? Have your student leave the phone at home. Research shows that phones out of reach - not just out of sight - most improves focus.
If your child needs to bring their cellphone to school, it must stay off and in their backpack. If you need to leave you student a message, please call the Main Office.
We need your help with this policy.
We ask that you do not text your student during the school day. Middle school is the time when students become more independent and learn valuable problem solving skills. Please ask your student not to text you during the day and if they do, please do not text them back, especially because they are in class. If you receive a text from your student or need to contact your student, please call the Eckstein Main Office so that we can contact your student for you. You can also schedule a message to be sent at 3:45 PM so that your student can receive the message after school. If they feel sick, they should go to the nurse or the Main Office to contact you. If they forget something at home, they should go to the Main Office to contact you.
Confiscated Cellphone/Smartwatches
Any student using their cellphone during the school day without staff permission will have their cellphone confiscated. Students who use their smartwatches for something other than checking the time will have their watches confiscated.
- First Confiscation: The student’s parent/guardian will receive an email that includes why the cellphone/smartwatch was confiscated.
- Second Confiscation: The student’s parent/guardian will receive an email, text, and/or phone call to that includes why the cellphone/smartwatch was confiscated and notifies the parent/guardian that the third confiscation will require a parent/guardian to retrieve the cellphone/smartwatch from school.
- Third Confiscation: The student’s parent/guardian will be contacted by email, text, and/or phone call that requests they pick up the cellphone/smartwatch from school. We will notify the parent/guardian as soon as the confiscation occurs.
Students will be reminded of this policy, "phones are off and away," everyday during announcements. Please talk to your student about our cellphone policy.
Attendance Matters!
Keep Your Child on Track in Middle School: Pay Attention to Attendance

Lunch monitoring: As a Lunch Monitor you will help supervise in the lunchroom, the garden or the field. You will work with the administrators and staff members also supervising these areas. You never have to discipline students yourself. Administrators will step in if there is a problem.
Chaperoning Fieldtrips: Most of the fieldtrips in middle school are related to the music program. Music teachers will reach out to their students' families to request chaperones. 8th grade comes to Camp Orikla in the fall and all three grades go on fieldtrips at the end of the year.
Library Help: Ms. Sterling always needs help in the library with stacking books, scanning returned books into the system and more.
Eagle Nights: We have Eagle Night dances for one or two grades during the year. We always need lots of help with these events. We will let you know when they occur and have a Signup Genius for to sign up.
If you would like to volunteer in any capacity, please contact Julia Detering at jrdetering@seattleschools.org.
