Hello Primary Pups! Hello Primary Pups!

A Note from Mrs. Bagarozza (Mrs. B)

Hello Primary Pup Families,

Thank you for being so understanding with our rain this past week. Despite the weather, we had a great time at the petting zoo! Be sure to check out this entire issue of the Pups Press because we have a ton of awesome photos from our book fair, petting zoo, and MPS awareness day. We also have a video highlighting the great transition field trip our PK-4 students went on at the end of April.

We have our Memorial Day parade next week, on Thursday, May 22nd. Weather permitting, this will be held outside around our front lawn. The morning group will have their parade at 10 am and the afternoon group will have their parade at 1:45 pm. Don't forget to dress your child in red, white, and blue to celebrate!

We have a long weekend for Memorial Day and are off on Friday, May 23rd and Monday, May 26. We will return to school on Tuesday, May 27th. Then, on Thursday, May 29th we have a very exciting day planned - WATER DAY! Your teachers will share more information about that extra fun day next week. If it rains, we will have water day on Friday, May 30th. We will keep you updated about that!

The last day for students this year at Wall Primary is Friday, June 6th. Then, on Monday, June 9th we will be having our Wall Primary School Graduation at the Wall Intermediate School. Parents of our graduating students are responsible for bringing their children directly to the Wall Intermeidate School that day. I will share more information about parking as we get closer.

This year, to honor our graduating pups, we are inviting every family to write a message to their child to be published in our program. Each family can only submit ONE message per child. Please keep these message to 120 characters or less (that includes letters, numbers, and punctuation but NOT spaces). Complete this form linked below by Friday, May 30 (but the sooner the better!).

Thank you Ms. Katelyn! Thank you Ms. Katelyn!

Ms. Katelyn, Student Teacher in Rm 3

Ms. Katelyn has been working in Ms. Crosby's classroom since the school year began. She was here a few days a week in the fall and then has been a student teacher at WPS full time since the winter. We have been so lucky to have Ms. Katelyn with us. She has done many wonderful things at WPS, most recently coordinating an Earth Day activity with WHS and the PM students. She has learned a lot from the excellent staff at WPS. Her last day is this Friday, May 2nd but she will be back to substitute. We will miss her and wish her all the best as she begins her career in education!

Tips from the WPS Staff Tips from the WPS Staff

From the Desk of our Speech Therapists, Ms. Longo and Ms. Tonachio

Bottles and pacifiers can potentially impede speech development, especially with prolonged use, by restricting the natural movements of the tongue and jaw necessary for babbling and speech sounds. They may also impact the development of the palate and dental alignment, potentially leading to articulation problems later on.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

1. Reduced Opportunities for Babbling and Vocal Play:

  • Babbling and vocalizing are crucial for developing the muscle coordination and sound production skills necessary for speech.

  • A pacifier in the mouth can limit opportunities for a child to engage in these activities, potentially hindering language development.

2. Impact on Tongue and Oral Muscles:

  • Prolonged sucking can affect the normal development of the tongue and jaw muscles, potentially leading to a forward-thrust swallow pattern (where the tongue pushes against the teeth instead of resting against the roof of the mouth).

  • This can impact articulation, making it harder to produce certain sounds, like "t," "d," and "l".

3. Dental and Palatal Issues:

  • Extended pacifier use can affect the shape of the palate and the alignment of the teeth, potentially leading to dental problems and impacting speech articulation.

  • Misaligned teeth or a narrow palate can make it difficult to produce sounds like "s," "z," and "sh".

4. Other Considerations:

  • Prolonged pacifier use can also be associated with a higher risk of ear infections (otitis media), which can further impact hearing and language development.

  • Some experts suggest that the forward and backward motion of the tongue while sucking on a pacifier can interfere with the development of proper sound placement.

In the next issue we will share some ways to wean off the bottle and/or pacifier.
