The Principal's Perspective

Character Trait for March: Responsibility and Motto Focus: Always Do Your Best

With the school year progressing steadily, it's an opportune time to focus on a critical life trait: responsibility. This trait is a tool for success both at school and for personal growth and development. At Ida Elementary we integrate responsibility into our daily activities and curriculum such as setting clear expectations, encouraging leadership roles, and promoting self-reflection in the form of consistent feedback and student-led activities. At home this might look like modeling responsible behavior in your daily life, assigning age-appropriate tasks, and explaining natural consequences both negative and positive. Together, we ensure our children develop the responsibility needed to thrive in school and beyond. Let's encourage them to take ownership of their learning and actions.

Our building wide positive behavior intervention support (PBIS): Character Trait and MOTTO

There is a direct connection between what we think and how we respond to situations throughout the day. Every month at Ida Elementary the entire staff focuses on supporting children THINK in a way that promotes positive friendship making and approach to understanding the curriculum being taught. At the end of each month, students demonstrating exceptional ability to show the trait of the month is celebrated with a certificate, name called during lunch, and a book vending machine token.

Please read the attached Mini Streak, or the paper version already sent home, for information such as the definition of Responsibility, its benefits, and strategies for teaching and modeling.

Please watch for future digital editions of the Ida Elementary School (IES) Mini Streak coming out the first Monday of each month during the school year as well as enjoying the paper version that will still be sent home by your child's teacher.

With Appreciation,

Ms. Maynard

Principal of Ida Elementary School

Mrs. Lusky and Mrs. Derian worked with the entire student body to create components of our beautiful new mural. Thank you for all the hard work that went into making our hallway beautiful and also bringing Down Syndrome Awareness to our students.

When I Sail My Boat

When I sail my boat, a lot of time is spent on adjusting lines to make the boat move with the wind. Just when it seems like everything is tuned, the wind shifts, resulting in a continual fine-tuning. I can’t help but relate this to our system of education. Just as things seem well adjusted, the wind shifts and knocks us off course. But then we adjust our lines and monitor the effect. It takes some time and readjusting, but the result is always rewarding, and the boat keeps moving forward. ~SM

Principal Maynard Appreciates You!
Ms. Maynard started her career in Ida as the Elementary Science Lab teacher in 2004. After years of sharing her love of science, she recognized her concern for rich learning environments and positive behavior supports would have a larger impact as an administrator. In 2020, Ms. Maynard started as an Assistant Principal at Ida High School, but a year later returned to her origins at the elementary when Mr. Wagner retired.
