Morton Ranch Elementary

Dear Parents,
Thank you so much for joining us last Thursday for International Night. Your presence and participation made the event truly special!
A big thank you as well to the MRE staff, PTA, students, and families for their hard work and dedication in making this event a huge success. It was a wonderful celebration of our diverse community, and we couldn't have done it without everyone’s support.
We appreciate all of you and look forward to more memorable events together!
REMINDER: We have a three-day weekend ahead of us!
Just a friendly reminder that students do not have school on Monday, as it is a designated Campus Professional Learning Day for our staff.
Enjoy the long weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday!

Meet Finn! A National ambassador for the American Heart Association. Finn was born with a rare congenital heart defect (CHD). Hearts need four chambers to function properly, and Finn was born with a heart with zero. He has been through 18 surgeries to fix his heart and suffered one stroke in his 10 years of life.
With all thanks to schools like yours and families like you, the proper research was funded to repair Finn's heart, and the proper advocacy was done to spot the signs of a stroke.
“When you sign up for Choose to Give, Reliant Energy will make a $100 contribution to the American Heart Association. Additionally, an ongoing contribution equal to 5% of your annual energy charges will be donated to American Heart Association. It’s a power plan with a powerful impact.”
Help Your Child Make A Difference
We've made it fun and easy to raise donations using our online tool! You can help your student setup a customized web page with a photo or video and email it to friends and family asking for their support. Donations are made directly to your student's web page – it’s that easy and something the family can do together! Help your child join their school team online and your family will be one step closer to being Heart Heroes helping to save lives!
Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have questions or need additional information.
Students may bring their valentine cards before February 14th!
Please aim to have all Valentine's cards/treats sent with your child no later than the morning of February 14th. Young children become very upset if they feel their items won't be there in time.
It would also help keep our office running smoothly by avoiding lots of last minute deliveries to students and interrupting their day. Thank you for your cooperation!
We understand that providing cards/treats for classmates can be a financial burden...especially with multiple children!
Do not worry...we've got you covered! Please reach out to your child's teacher if you need an alternate idea. We keep extra printable valentine cards handy for students that would like to deliver little notes for friends.

STATE OF TEXAS ASSESSMENTS OF ACADEMIC READINESS
The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) is a standardized academic achievement test designed to measure the extent to which a student has learned and is able to apply the defined knowledge and skills in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) at each tested grade, subject, and course. Every STAAR question is directly aligned to the TEKS currently in effect for the grade and subject or course being assessed.
STAAR helps to ensure that Texas students are competitive with other students both nationally and internationally. Another important function of STAAR is gauging how well schools and teachers prepare their students academically. In addition, STAAR fulfills the requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, which requires that all students be assessed in specific grades and subjects throughout their academic careers.
STAAR is an online assessment in mathematics, reading language arts (RLA), science, and social studies for students in grades 3–8 and high school and online tests in Spanish for students in grades 3–5.
Who is tested?
All students enrolled in Texas public schools and open-enrollment charter schools in grades 3–8 and specific high school courses are required by both federal and state law to participate in STAAR.
Click the calendar below to view dates where MRE will be a "closed campus."
All testing will occur during our normal school day.
To protect the integrity of the testing environment, Morton Ranch Elementary will be a closed campus (to outside visitors) on days when the STAAR test is being administered.
The calendar below identifies the days where MRE will be closed to lunch visitors, classroom readers, volunteers, etc.

ALWAYS bring your physical driver’s license or passport with you when you come to school. We are video monitored by the Katy ISD Police Department to make sure we are checking identification for each person that enters the school to ensure the safety of your child and our staff. Therefore, we are unable to let you into the school without proper identification.
Our cafeteria doors open for breakfast at 7:30 AM. and our front entrance doors open at 7:50 AM. We’ve found that having “All Mavs in by 8:10 AM” has been a great help in making sure they are in class ready to learn prior to 8:10 AM. Please have your child ready to exit the car when you are in position to unload. Your child is encouraged to exit on his/her own, if capable. If your child is not in the building by the time the tardy bell rings (8:10 AM), he/she will be sent to the front office for a tardy slip.
If you plan to check out your child early, please do so prior to 2:30 p.m. but after 9:35 am. (This would be considered an early checkout for attendance purposes.) Our schools are funded based on many factors, one important factor being attendance. It is always in the child’s best interest to be in school a full day, but we know that is not always possible. If you need to check your child out for a doctor’s appointment, dentist, etc. towards the end of the school day, it must be done before 2:30 p.m.
Changes of Transportation can be (1) e-mailed to the front office with a copy of the parent or guardian’s driver’s license to MRECOT@katyisd.org (2) hand-written in the front office. Change of transportation requests must be received no later than 2:00 p.m. on regular days and 11:30 a.m. on early dismissal days.
Please report absences online when your child is absent on our Morton Ranch Elementary website under the Absence Reporting link. You may also call our front office on (281) 234-0300. Teachers are busy teaching our Mavericks and therefore not able to relay your phone or email message to the attendance clerk.
We understand emailing the teacher is the easiest form of communication. However, it is not acceptable for changes in transportation, reported absences, or early checkouts. You can always email the teacher a “heads up”, but please know that the teacher doesn’t always have time to check email/Dojo/voice messages before or during class.
Plan ahead for rainy/cold weather by sending jackets and umbrellas. (Please write your child’s name on all jackets and sweaters). Children who are bikers/walkers may want to keep a rain poncho in their backpacks. If your child is a biker/walker and there is a chance of bad weather, please make it easy on yourself by submitting the online change of transportation with your child, making him/her a bus or car rider.
**REMINDER** Morton Ranch Elementary does not have an alternate weather dismissal plan. It is the parent's responsibility to watch the weather forecast, decide if a change of transportation is necessary, and submit a change in a timely manner by or before 2:00 p.m.
If you have any questions, please call the front office 281-234-0300.
Students should be seated and in their classrooms no later than 8:10
Our school day begins promptly at 8:10 am.
A parent/guardian of a school-age child has the responsibility to require that his/her child attend school regularly. When sickness or another reason necessitates an absence, a note signed by the parent/guardian or phone call explaining the reason for the absence is required prior to or when the student returns to school. If a student fails to submit a note from the parent or the school does not receive a phone call from the parent, the absence will automatically be considered unexcused.
Absences for vacations, business trips, babysitting, working, and other such reasons shall be considered unexcused. Read here for more information regarding attendance in KISD.
A friendly reminder to all parents: dismissal is at 3:20 p.m. every day, and it is important that students are picked up promptly.
Timely pick-up ensures that students are not left waiting and helps maintain a smooth end to the school day. The front office is reserved for emergency situations only, so please make arrangements to pick up your child on time. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and efficient dismissal process.
