iFly Indoor Skydiving 🪶

On Friday, April 24th, Mrs. Sweiger's students participated in a comprehensive hands-on STEM learning experience focused on flight physics and aerodynamics.

With 9 students and 2 teachers engaged over a 3-hour period, the field trip integrated theoretical concepts with practical application through a carefully structured rotational schedule. Students explored key physics principles including velocity vs. mass relationships, velocity vs. area relationships, and terminal velocity through laboratory experiments and physics demonstrations. The centerpiece of the experience was an indoor wind tunnel flight session, where students applied their newly learned concepts in real-time, experiencing firsthand how aerodynamic principles affect flight. Prior to flying, all participants received flight safety training and gear instruction. By rotating through two sessions, all students completed the lab activities, flight safety training, and actual wind tunnel flights. Beyond the technical learning, students also explored career pathways in aerospace engineering, aeronautics, physics, and aviation, discovering how the concepts they learned can lead to exciting STEM careers. This field trip successfully bridged theory and practice, giving students memorable, tangible evidence of physics concepts while exposing them to real-world opportunities in STEM fields.

This wind tunnel field trip had a transformative impact on our students by making abstract physics concepts tangible and exciting. Rather than learning about velocity, mass, and aerodynamics through textbooks alone, students experienced these principles firsthand in a dynamic, real-world environment. The hands-on laboratory activities and physics demonstrations helped students understand the "why" behind the science, while the indoor wind tunnel flight experience provided an unforgettable moment where theory became reality—students could literally feel how their understanding of aerodynamics translated into flight. For many of our students, this opportunity represents something extraordinary that they would not otherwise access. Most young people never experience a wind tunnel or engage with aerospace physics at this level, making this field trip a rare privilege. By stepping outside their comfort zones and attempting something challenging and unfamiliar, students discovered their own resilience and capability. Facing their fears—whether about flying, trying new activities, or engaging with complex scientific concepts—and succeeding built genuine self-esteem and confidence.

Students realized they are capable of more than they thought possible, fostering a growth mindset that extends far beyond this single experience. Beyond content mastery, this experience broadened our students' perspectives on STEM careers. By connecting classroom concepts to aviation, aerospace engineering, and physics, students gained insight into meaningful career pathways they may not have previously considered. For many, this field trip sparked curiosity and confidence in their ability to pursue advanced STEM studies. The collaborative, rotational structure also fostered teamwork and peer learning, allowing students to support one another through new challenges. Perhaps most importantly, this experience demonstrated that science is not isolated to the classroom—it's alive, applicable, and exciting. Students left the field trip with renewed enthusiasm for STEM, concrete memories of scientific principles in action, a clearer vision of how their learning connects to the real world, and most valuably, the confidence that comes from conquering new challenges. This type of experiential learning plants seeds for future academic interests and career exploration while reinforcing the powerful message that our students belong in STEM fields. Students' quotes: "I am so glad I did this!", "At first, was the scariest thing I have ever done but once I did it, I realized how fun it was!", "I can't believe I did this!"

This event was made possible through a $600 grant from the Air and Space Force Association and the hard work of students working at concession stands throughout the year.
