Message From the Principal
PHS Parents & Guardians:
As we head into October, we wanted to update you on our ongoing anti-bullying efforts. While we focus on this crucial issue all year, October is National Anti-Bullying Month, giving us a chance to highlight our commitment to a safe and supportive school environment for all students.
This month, a key topic of our campaign will be the impact of social media on teenage well-being. This is an issue that plays a significant role in bullying, and it’s a topic we must address directly. We will be working with our freshmen leadership classes to help increase awareness among all our students about the potential negative effects of social media.
Our discussions with students will focus on several key areas, including:
Mental Health: Research has shown a link between increased social media use and higher rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness in teenagers.
Addictive Design: Many social media platforms are intentionally designed to be addictive, using endless scrolling and constant notifications that can disrupt sleep and take time away from healthier activities like sports, hobbies, and in-person friendships.
Online Harassment: We will discuss how social media can make teens more vulnerable to bullying, harassment, and exposure to toxic content. We will also address how algorithms can push extreme or harmful content to young people.
Personal Safety: We will emphasize the dangers of oversharing personal information online, which can expose students to online predators or strangers.
While we recognize that social media has positive benefits, we believe it's essential to educate our students about its potential downsides. Our goal is to work together, as a school and as a community, to help students develop a healthier online and offline balance. We recently took a significant step by banning phones during instructional time, and this campaign is our next step in raising awareness.
We encourage you to join us in this effort by talking to your children about these issues. By setting boundaries on screen time and content, and by encouraging intentional use of social media for creative purposes or healthy connections, we can help our students reclaim their time and well-being.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our students safe and healthy.
Sincerely,
Jason

SCHOOL SAFETY UPDATES
Fall Severe Weather Season
Purcell High School Safety Update: Weather Preparedness
This week, our focus has been on weather safety. On Monday, we successfully conducted our fall tornado drill. Our teachers and students did a fantastic job, moving to their designated shelters in an organized and efficient manner.
We also reviewed our severe weather protocols, which include moving the school to lockdown status and stopping all student movement between the high school, junior high, and ag building.
A reminder to parents: In the event of a high likelihood of severe weather, our front office can become overwhelmed with a high volume of student check-outs. During these times, the principal may declare "rapid checkout procedures."
Emergency Check-out: If you have already given permission for emergency check-outs, your student may leave without you needing to be present or call-in.
Upperclassmen with registered cars: High school upperclassmen with a car registered with the school are eligible for emergency check-out. They still need to check out through the office but do not require a parent's signature.
Normal Circumstances: Under normal conditions, all students still need a parent's approval to check out.
As we head into fall, please be alert for an increased possibility of severe weather. Remember to move indoors once you hear thunder or see lightning. Your child's safety is our top priority! ⚡️🏫
Counselor's Corner
Hello PHS Parents,
This week, we have two big events to help students plan for their future. Also please see the next fall national ACT testing date.
Mid-America Technology Center Presentation
On Monday, September 22nd, all sophomores will hear a presentation from Mid-America Technology Center (MATC). This is a great chance to learn about the awesome programs available to PHS students starting in their junior year. As students begin their upperclassmen years, they should be thinking about their plans after high school. Whether it's career tech, college, the military, or entering the workforce, some type of training or education after high school is almost always needed to succeed.
College & Career Night
Join us on Tuesday, September 23rd, at 6:00 PM in the PHS Commons for our annual College & Career Night! 🎓
You'll have the opportunity to meet with representatives from various colleges, military branches, and MATC. Our special guest, Kirk Rushing, will also be there to answer all of your financial aid questions.
Next Fall ACT testing date: October 18, 2025
Late Registration Deadline
Sincerely,
Melissa Feroli

PHS CLASSROOM NEWS
Fall MAP Assessments Family Reports Coming Soon
Family reports will be sent soon to each freshmen and sophomore parent with student scores from their fall MAP assessments (sorry for the delay!) Freshmen and sophomores are assessed twice yearly in the fall and spring. We measure student learning growth with our spring assessment. The family report also provides students with a picture of their student's learning progression over time. The MAP assessments are accurate indicators of ACT readiness in reading, math, and science.
PHS AVIATION PROGRAM
Purcell High School's aviation program is taking to the skies! ✈️ Students recently practiced with our commercial-grade drones, gaining valuable flight experience.
Some of these students are in their third year of the four-year program and are preparing to take their commercial drone license test at the end of the year.
Our aviation classes are led by a fantastic team of educators: Jack McNeely (PHS science teacher and science department chair), Corryn Breidinger (Purcell Junior High science teacher), and Reilly Willingham (PHS student teacher). 👨✈️
STUDENTS HAVE REAL-WORLD LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Our students are getting great experience in the community!
This week, they visited Purcell Municipal Hospital and FlexWorx to learn about important real-world skills. At the hospital, they learned about the ER check-in process and even discovered the summer VolunTeen program. At FlexWorx, they got a personal tour from trainer Josh Eck and learned about gym memberships.
A huge thank you to all the staff at Purcell Municipal Hospital and FlexWorx for welcoming our students and giving them these valuable life lessons!
DRAGON BREW VISITS WAYNE HIGH SCHOOL & LITTLE LEAGUE GAMES
Our Dragon Brew business recently ventured outside of Purcell Public Schools and took their business to Wayne Public Schools and also set up shop at the Purcell Little League football games. These are great opportunities for our students to sharpen their business and marketing skills. Great job and thank you to Wayne Public Schools and Purcell Little League Football Association for welcoming our Dragon Brew business!

Donors Choose Project: Corea - ART
I am often asked if there is anything I need for my art classroom, and I am so grateful to be part of such a supportive community that wants the best for our students. Right now, I have the perfect opportunity to share how you can help.
I have launched a DonorsChoose project to bring a color printer, sticker paper, and extra ink into our classroom. This will allow students to transform their digital artwork into custom stickers they can design, print, and proudly take home.
With this project, students won’t just be creating on screens—they’ll be able to see their imagination come to life in their hands. The extra ink will also ensure that this resource supports many future projects and classes to come.
We would be so grateful if you could consider supporting our project by making a donation of any size. Every contribution brings us closer to giving our students a lasting creative tool.
You can view our project at: https://www.donorschoose.org/project/stick-with-creativity-printing-student/9724941/
Thank you for always supporting our classroom and for helping us make creativity come alive!
Warmly,
Jon Corea
