Tombaugh Elementary Newsletter: March 2025
A Word from your Principals:
Dear Tombaugh Families:
As we continue our shared mission of providing a safe and nurturing environment for our students, I want to take a moment to discuss an important issue that impacts children both in and out of the classroom—social media usage.
While social media platforms can be a great way to stay connected, they also present challenges, especially for young children. Many platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat, have minimum age requirements, yet we are seeing an increasing number of elementary-aged students engaging with these apps. This can expose them to risks such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and online interactions that may not always be safe.
To help protect our students, we strongly encourage all parents and guardians to take an active role in monitoring their child’s social media use. Here are some ways you can help:
- Know what platforms your child is using – Familiarize yourself with the apps, their features, and their privacy settings.
- Set boundaries and guidelines – Establish clear rules for screen time and appropriate online behavior.
- Monitor online activity – Regularly check your child’s social media interactions and discuss any concerns.
- Encourage open communication – Let your child know they can talk to you about anything they encounter online.
- Utilize parental controls – Many devices and apps offer settings to help monitor and restrict content.
At Tombaugh Elementary, we are committed to teaching digital citizenship and responsible technology use. We kindly ask for your partnership in ensuring that students are using social media safely and appropriately. If you have any questions or need guidance on parental controls or online safety resources, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our children safe, both online and offline.

Attendance Matters
Attendance for Success
Across the country, more than 8 million students are missing so many days of school that they are academically at risk. Chronic absence — missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences and suspensions, can translate into third-graders unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing subjects and ninth-graders dropping out of high school.
