Superintendent's Memo
Hopkinton Public Schools
September 2026 Superintendent's Memo
Dear Hopkinton Families, Students, Staff, and Community Members,
As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, I am incredibly grateful to be entering my second year as Superintendent and my twenty-second year in the Hopkinton Public Schools.
My first year as superintendent was very much about listening and learning. I spent a lot of time talking with students, staff, families, and community members about what we do well, where we can get better, and what we want for the future of our schools. I learned a great deal through those conversations, and I am appreciative of how many people took the time to share their experiences, ideas, concerns, and hopes with me.
As I enter year two, I am excited to begin turning much of that listening into action.
This will be an important year for Hopkinton Public Schools. We will develop a new three-year strategic plan that will help set our direction and guide our work over the next several years. We will pilot elementary literacy programs across Marathon, Elmwood, and Hopkins, learn from our teachers and students throughout the year, and ultimately select one program next June that we believe will best support literacy instruction for our elementary students moving forward.
At the same time, we will be preparing for some significant changes coming in the 2027–2028 school year. The opening of the new Charleswood School and the grade reconfiguration that follows will impact nearly every part of our district. We will also be working through decisions around school start times and transportation as we prepare for that transition.
There is a lot ahead of us. It is exciting work, but it is also important and sometimes complicated work. These are decisions that will impact our students, staff, and families for years to come, and I know we will not always agree on every decision or every detail. What I can promise is that we will do our best to listen, communicate openly, consider different perspectives, and keep our students at the center of the decisions we make.
I am looking forward to your partnership and collaboration as we navigate this year together. One of the things I have always appreciated most about Hopkinton is how invested people are in our schools. That investment comes with high expectations, thoughtful questions, different opinions, and a shared desire to provide the very best experience we can for our students. I believe that makes us better.
Through all of the planning and change ahead, what matters most will remain the same. We want our students to be challenged, supported, known, and cared for. We want them to enjoy coming to school, develop meaningful relationships with the adults and students around them, discover what they are passionate about, and leave us prepared for whatever comes next.
I am incredibly proud of our schools and excited about where we are headed. There is a lot of work to do, and I am looking forward to doing it together.
Thank you, as always, for the trust you place in our schools and in the people who work in them every day. Looking forward to a great year ahead.
Go Hillers,
Evan Bishop

Scenes From Marathon School
There is a lot happening at Marathon School as we begin the new year! Work continues on the new adaptive playground, which is expected to be ready by the end of September. It is going to be a wonderful, inclusive space for our youngest Hillers, and we’re excited to watch it come together. We’re also excited to welcome Jen Taylor (pictured below between Preschool Director Ms. Overdahl and Marathon Principal Ms. Dubeau) as Marathon’s new Assistant Principal, joining the Marathon team. And Marathon also had a great turnout for its Get to Know Marathon days in August. Kindergarteners and first graders new to HPS had a chance to explore the school, got comfortable with the building, and even practiced riding a school bus around the parking lot. A great way to help our newest Hillers feel ready for the first day!

This year will be a special one at Elmwood School as we begin the final school year in a building that has meant so much to generations of Hopkinton students, families, and staff. While we’re excited about what lies ahead, we also recognize the many memories and rich history within those walls. Throughout the year, we’ll take time to celebrate Elmwood and the people who have made it such a special community. Pictured below is the Elmwood administrative team: Assistant Principal Ms. Tynan, Principal Mr. Brauninger, and Assistant Principal Ms. Hines. We’re also sharing a few updates from the new Charleswood School, including recently installed classroom cabinetry and a look at the building’s exterior. With Charleswood scheduled to open in August 2027, this will be an exciting year as we celebrate where we’ve been and look forward to what’s ahead!

Scenes from HMS
This year will be a special one at Hopkinton Middle School, as we begin our final year with sixth grade in the building before our grade reconfiguration in 2027–2028. As we look ahead to that transition, there is still plenty to be excited about at HMS this year! Principal Matt Lefebvre, Assistant Principals Ann Beneneck and Lauren McDonough, and Athletic Director Ricky Andrade are ready to welcome students and staff back for another great year. Last week, HMS also welcomed the Class of 2033 for Grade 6 Orientation, giving our newest middle schoolers an opportunity to get to know the building and begin making connections. A lot of work happened over the summer to get HMS ready, including new flooring, furniture, desks and chairs, whiteboards, and other updates and improvements throughout the building. A big thank you to our custodial and maintenance teams for all of their hard work this summer. We’re looking forward to a great year at HMS and making the most of this final year together as a 6–8 school!

2027-2028 Transportation/School Start Times Update
As we continue planning for the opening of Charleswood School and our new grade configurations in the fall of 2027, one of the important decisions ahead of us involves transportation and school start times.
At our most recent School Committee meeting, we shared several potential options for what the school day and transportation system could look like in 2027–2028. The slideshow below provides an overview of those options and some of the considerations that come with each.
No decisions have been made, and we want to make sure our school community has an opportunity to provide feedback before we move forward. We’ll be gathering that feedback over the next several weeks. We encourage families, staff, students, and community members to share their thoughts by reaching out to Superintendent Evan Bishop at ebishop@hopkinton.k12.ma.us and/or the School Committee at hpsschoolcommittee@hopkinton.k12.ma.us.
Our goal is to make a final decision at the September 10 School Committee meeting. Making that decision early in the school year will give our families and staff plenty of time to plan ahead for September 2027.
SUMMER OF HILLERS!
It was incredible to see Hiller pride on full display all summer long! From vacations and adventures to camps, summer programs, and time spent with family and friends, our Hillers found so many ways to stay connected and represent Hopkinton near and far. A huge thank you to everyone who shared photos and let us follow along.
Be sure to check out the Summer of Hillers slideshow below—filled with great pictures, big smiles, amazing adventures, and plenty of Hopkinton gear! From right here at home to destinations around the world, it was pretty awesome to see our Hillers representing wherever summer took them. Summer of Hillers was a great reminder that even when school is out, our community stays connected—and Hiller pride travels everywhere!

Welcome to HPS! We’re so glad you’re here.
