Anglo European School
Week Commencing: 6th July 2026
World Class International Education in Languages
We are delighted that the Anglo European School has been named in the HEPI League tables as one of the top ten schools in England for language provision. We were also one of only two state funded school who were non-selective comprehensive schools which is really pleasing.
It was lovely to receive national recognition for the Anglo European School, celebrating its international curriculum, including its long-standing commitment to excellence in modern languages.
As the lead school for the Eastern Region, Anglo European School connects local schools in communities of practice, strengthening system leadership across the region, with support from experts at NCLE.
This year in its National Priority Project for the NCLE, our school is researching how to leverage AI to foster Inclusion; improving access to languages for students of all abilities. Forming the basis of their commitment to strategic Leadership across the sector, Anglo European school will also take the lead in the new National German A-Level Class (NGAC): a highly innovative new model of delivery for German A Level through a mix of online and in person classes, 60% delivered by Goethe-Institut and NCLE (via the Anglo European School) and 40% delivered by local teachers, with the support of Languages for all. Mrs Peeters, Assistant Headteacher, will take a lead on this, with the support of Mrs Latimer as the Head of languages and Mrs Gee continues to Chair the Headteacher's Strategic Board and sit on the Board of the NCLE.
The NGAC allows schools with low numbers of prospective pupils to continue to offer A Level German, when they would otherwise not be able to – a potential breakthrough for what remains the most in-demand language skill among British businesses.
It was also lovely to see recognition for the Anglo European School’s leading role in another flagship DfE-funded programme, the Mandarin Excellence Programme (MEP). This continues to be delivered with UCL Institute of Education (IOE) in partnership with the British Council. The programme exceeded its initial target of seeing at least 5,000 pupils in England on track towards fluency in the language by 2020. That number exceeded 16,000 in 2025.
This week, our Year 9 MEP students are in Hanzhou for their immersive study visit, spending the mornings studying Chinese with Peking University professors and the afternoons using their language as they visited notable sites of Chinese history and culture. We have been receiving some lovely videos of them taking part in PE lessons, Sports Day and showing off their dancing skills in Hnazhou's central square.
Jody Gee, Headteacher, "We are absolutely thrilled to be named in the HEPI's 'top ten'; it's a significant endorsement of the innovative, creative and evidence informed practice that has been further developed by our partnership with the NCLE, which allows every child to study two languages successfully as part of their broad, balanced, international education. A student's experience of learning languages here is unique and enables them to be competitive in the global economic market as they progress to the world of work.
We work closely with our community of excellent practice through the NCLE’s Strategic Learning Networks, who represent lead schools who are committed to improving school leadership in languages in their different contexts. We extend our congratulations to Dartford Grammar School, our NCLE partner, who were also represented in the top ten. It is lovely to see the impact of this strong, complementary practice shared across our network."
Year 11 Prom
On Wednesday night our fabulous Year 11 met for one last celebration at Crondon Park, where they enjoyed music, dancing, a splendid buffet and excellent company. They have all now finished their GCSEs and shown resilience, ambition and scholarship throughout, so this celebration was very much deserved. There were some stunning outfits on show and some exceptional entrances, including a fire engine and a horse!
Mr Mitchell said, "As their Year Leader, I have never felt more proud of them than I feel right now. They have all worked so hard to get to where they are today, putting in the maximum effort at every opportunity to achieve their best. They all now have a long summer ahead of them to lay back and get some well-deserved relaxation.
I very much look forward to seeing them all again on the 20th August for results day."

Pride Week
This week, our school marked Pride Week by celebrating the values of respect, inclusion and belonging within our community. Pride Week provides an opportunity to recognise the importance of ensuring that everyone feels welcome, valued and able to be themselves.
To mark the week, students took part in a number of activities, including our popular Hunt for the Pride Gonk, where our knitted Pride Gonk, Sergeant Angel was hidden around the school for students to find. We also came together for the raising of the Pride flag, accompanied by the message: "Everyone is welcome here." This simple but important statement reflects our commitment to creating a school where every member of our community is treated with kindness, dignity and respect.
Thank you to everyone who took part in the week's activities and helped make Pride Week an enjoyable and positive occasion for all.
The Bibliomaniacs watched the live ceremony, announcing the winners of this year's prestigious Carnegie Award for Children's Writing. During the months leading up to this, the group spent time reading and discussing all the nominated titles as part of a Carnegie Shadowing Group. Along with Mrs Ford and Mrs Jamison, the students voted online for their favourite new novel and saw with great delight that their favourite - Wolf Siren by Beth O'Brien won not only the Shadowers' Choice Award but also the Carnegie Medal for writing.
Wolf Siren by Beth O'Brien is available to borrow from the Library; it is a nuanced tale of living with a disability inspired by the author's own experience of sight impairment and is a feminist retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. As the author herself explained, it all began with the question 'Why did Little Red Riding Hood not recognize her grandmother?'. The students loved the reimagined story and it was the definite winner amongst the group.
