October 2024
Happy Fall!
As someone who has always loved reading, I'm excited to share a challenge we're offering to our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders this year: The Million Word Challenge!
Students can now log the number of words they read in each book on their Google Classroom advisory spreadsheet. A running total will help them notify the office when they hit these milestones: 250,000, 500,000, 750,000, and 1,000,000 words. With each milestone, students will earn exciting rewards!
It's crucial for our students to dedicate time to reading because it enhances their vocabulary. The more they see, hear, and use words—in reading, writing, and speaking—the better they will grow as communicators.
Thank you for supporting our students as they "rack up the miles" as readers!

Cell Phone/Device Policy
A HUGE "Thank You" to our Students, Staff & Community!
As you know, at the beginning of the year, Yellow Medicine East Schools implemented a new student cell phone/personal device policy and guidelines. We want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone for your incredible support of our new cell phone policy. Because of your commitment and cooperation, we've already seen a drastic reduction in office referrals this year compared to last!
Our students have stepped up, showing great respect and responsibility. Our staff has done an amazing job consistently enforcing the policy, creating a positive learning environment. And to our community – your backing and encouragement have been key to making this change a success.
Together, we are making a difference! Thank you all for helping us build a better, more focused environment for learning. Let's keep up the great work!

Homecoming 2024
Homecoming Week at #TheHive: A Huge Success!
Homecoming at "The Hive" was one for the books! 🎉
We kicked off the excitement with Family Reunion Day: BBQ Dad vs. Soccer Mom – and it’s safe to say, EVERYONE came out a winner! 👏 The week’s festivities started strong with the Coronation Ceremony where we crowned our King Eric and Queen Keira—congratulations to both! 👑
Tuesday brought the ever-popular Pajama Day—students and staff rolled straight out of bed and into school, cozy and comfortable. 💤 That night, after an epic varsity volleyball battle with KMS, the FFA hosted their annual bonfire on the football field to cap off a fun-filled day! 🔥🏐
On Wednesday, we dressed to impress for Formal Day and school pictures! 📸 The FFA also fired up the grill for a delicious burger and brat cookout, serving over 300 hamburgers to all MS/HS students—way to go, FFA! 🍔 The night ended with the Powderpuff Football Game, where the seniors took on the juniors under the lights. The competition was fierce, but the laughter and school spirit were even stronger. 🏈👏
Decade Day on Thursday threw it way back through the decades! Each grade rocked their retro style:
- Seniors & 8th graders: 2000s
- Juniors & 7th graders: 1990s
- Sophomores & 6th graders: 1980s
- Freshmen: 1970s
The cross-country team also hosted their home meet, with a special performance from the pep band to keep the energy high! 🎶🏃♀️
We closed out the week on Friday with Sting Pride Day, with students and staff decked out in their favorite Sting gear. The high school student council hosted an epic Pep Fest on the football field, bringing together BRE and MS/HS students for a show of Sting spirit! 🐝 The varsity football game kept the excitement going, and students capped off the night with the Homecoming Dance at Lee Mar Ranch. 💃🕺
It was an incredible week full of fun, laughter, and unmatched school spirit. A huge thank you to everyone who made it special! 💙 #GoSting #TheHive

The YME FCA kicks off the year with their first Huddle!
Wednesday, September 11th, the YME FCA kicked off the year with their first "Huddle". ALL student athletes, coaches and staff are invited to join in the huddles every Wednesday morning, 7:30am-8:00am, on Volsted Field, (until it get's too cold, then they'll move inside). Donuts are always provided.

The Mascot Project
Our MS/HS Student Council is thrilled to announce "The Mascot Project" is officially in motion! We’re bringing new life to our beloved school mascot, and we need YOUR help to make it happen!
We’re raising funds to bring a brand-new mascot to the Hive, and we want YOU to be part of this exciting journey! Our hope is to purchase a custom mascot costume that can be used for years to come at YME and community events. YME MS/HS Student Council will be actively fundraising and grant writing this fall to work towards our goal. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Later this year, students and the community will join forces to give our new mascot the perfect name. Want to help? Donations can be made by contacting Krystle in the MS/HS office. Let’s make this happen, YME! Stay tuned for more details—you won’t want to miss it!
Welcome to the District!
Welcome to the district shirts were distributed last week to over 25 new students just in time for Sting Pride day, courtesy of the PTO! Here’s just a few of the smiling faces! We are so glad you’re here!

High School Band Day
2024 High School Band Day was a HUGE success!
On Saturday, September 7th, the YME Concert Band had the incredible opportunity to perform on the field at Huntington Bank Stadium during the Gopher Football game vs. Rhode Island. They left Granite Falls at 3:00am on Saturday morning and did a sunrise rehearsal. They got to perform some tunes with the University of Minnesota Marching Band and other high schools around the state!
We are thankful for this opportunity and are proud to represent Yellow Medicine East Schools, the communities we live in, and the music that brings us together on such a big stage.
It's was a GREAT DAY!
