About Eurydice: About Eurydice:

In Eurydice, Sarah Ruhl reimagines the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its heroine. Dying too young and on her wedding day, Eurydice must journey to the underworld, where she reunites with her father and struggles to remember her lost love. With contemporary characters, ingenious plot twists, and breathtaking visuals, the play is a fresh look at a timeless love story.

Character Breakdowns: Character Breakdowns:

Eurydice:(16-25, Woman)

Eurydice is drawn to anything interesting. She’s a book lover with passionate opinions, though she often gives up the spotlight to others. She approaches the world with childlike, innocent curiosity. She is “a little too young and a little too in love.” She stands on the edge of what is “expected”, wondering if she should jump off.

Orpheus:(16-25, any gender)

Music is his life. Orpheus takes things as they are and likes to live in black and white. His music is made of his love for the art and for the people. Like Eurydice, he is “a little too young and a little too in love.”

Father:(50s-60s, Man)

Father’s love for his daughter drives him to creation and to resist the laws of the underworld. He’s tender, a little quirky, and “subversive". He breaks the rules in order to remember.

Nasty Interesting Man/Child/Lord of The Underworld: (really old but still young, any gender)

His timeless existence has left him with a permanent sense of childishness and endless boredom. He is selfish and corrupted by power but not exactly sure what to do with it. Over the course of the play, he matures in his own way.

A Chorus Stones:(ageless but still young, any gender)

The guardians of the underworld. May be played as teenage girls, with the ignorance and confidence of that age. They generally mean well, but their certainty in enforcing right and wrong often comes across as cruel.

Big Stone: The know-it-all who is in charge.

Little Stone: Childlike and hyper.

Loud Stone: Always a beat behind everyone else.
