Decatur community,

This past week was my first opportunity be a part of Homecoming Week at DCHS. It did not disappoint. School spirit days, float building, hall decorating, a pep rally, and a whole lot more made for an unforgettable first experience that will not be forgotten.

There have been many "Homecoming Weeks" that I have experienced in the past, but there is something special about what happened this past week here in Oberlin.

SHOUTOUTS SHOUTOUTS

This week I will be sticking to Homecoming Shoutouts.

Shoutout
to the Booster Club. The first month of school is officially over, and one thing that has been apparent is that there is a strong involvement through the Booster Club. The Booster Club was out in the wind getting the field marked this past week, and they once again served our students, staff, and community guests hot dogs following the Homecoming Pep Rally.

Shoutout to Ms. Fort and the cheerleaders for planning a fun pep rally that got everyone involved. Though the rain prevented us from having the bonfire, they quickly rallied and were able to make the most out of the night.

Shoutout to each and every student that made it a fun week through participation. The dress up days saw a lot of participation, with Wear Red" seeing the most. The hallways started slowly, but each group rallied. The floats were impressive, and each class showed their own unique style.

,

Shoutout to the everyone that donated a car for the Homecoming candidates to ride in or a trailer for floats.

Shoutout to football coach Brandon Hardwick. Though the season is off to a tough start, Coach Hardwick has maintained a positive attitude throughout the whole process, constantly encouraging the boys and keeping their confidence level and focus high. The boys have played better each week, and they continue to fight until the last whistle.

Shoutout to music teachers Lisa Johnson and Jenny Tally, along with their DCHS Singers. Their performance at the Homecoming Assembly was both impressive and fun. This group practices every week in the morning, and you can tell. I am looking so forward to watching them perform this year.

Shoutout to STUCO and every student that was part of organizing Homecoming Week. Mrs. Breth and and the students truly thought of everything.

Shoutout to the 10 Year Candidates that spoke at the assembly: Zach May, Mika (Hackney) Fortin, and Cassidy (Shields) Vaughn. Though Cassidy did not make it back, her letter was read and full of emotion. Each of the candidates/athlete of the past shared some incredible memories and perspective about their experiences dealing with Oberlin and Homecoming Week. Truly powerful. They truly show shining examples of what DCHS has offered, and each is a powerful role model in our community.

Shoutout to the guest at the assembly that came from over 500 miles away to be at this assembly.

Shoutout to the guest that graduated from DCHS in 1951.

Shoutout to Breyana Gehring and Gavin Seller for being named Homecoming King and Queen. In my short time with them, they have both shown themselves to involved leaders in the school, and their peers obviously thought very highly of them as well. It was a great group of candidates and a difficult decision. Congratulations, Queen Breyana and King Gavin.

Shoutout the elementary teachers and students that came out to support our students during the parade. I loved watching the younger generations show their support. You could see the excitement and awe in their eyes.

Shoutout to the community that showed up to watch the parade and to the decorations that were posted up and down Penn. You could feel the long standing tradition.

Shoutout to Mrs. Breth for planning the week, sponsoring the dance, and capturing everything in pictures, some of which I am sharing here. See all of the pictures on our Facebook page.

Early Release on Friday, September 30.

There will be an Early Release on Friday, September 30th due to our home football game against Hoxie being moved to a 3:00 start time. Here is the post last was on our Facebook page. :

USD 294 will have a 2:00 Early Release for students on Friday, Sept. 30. The DCHS football game with Hoxie has been moved up to 3:00 because of a lack of officials. (The same officiating crew will be working a second game that evening in a different town.)

The 2:00 early release includes both Oberlin Elementary School and Decatur Community Junior/Senior High School.

Officials play an important role in school activity programs. The KSHSAA recognizes the sacrifice these individuals make which allow student-athletes to participate in a fair and safe environment. If you are interested in becoming an official, more information can be found at https://www.kshsaa.org/.../Official/PDFs/Brochure-2018.pdf

Twitter (I will leave this Info. throughout September)

Parents, students, family, and community members,

I urge you to sign up for our Twitter page. You can look up Decatur County Community Red Devils or follow @DCHSREDDEVILS .Twitter is generally the fastest way to get information. Even my Weekly Messages will typically go out on Twitter before they are sent to you through PowerSchool. I would share this with loved ones as well. Twitter is the easiest way to catch a quick glimpse into the school and also get updates on changes. Our hope would be to grow our Twitter following and continue to share what we are doing at the school.

Tradition. That's what this past week was all about, and it was great to be a part of it. I am seeing it all with fresh eyes this year, and I am genuinely enjoying everything about it. I look forward to seeing what else is in store.

Until next week,

Jeremy Holloway
