Terry High School Counselor News
January 2026 Edition 7
Onward & Upward: Perseverance, Renewal,
and the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Each January, we pause to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—a leader whose words and actions continue to challenge and inspire generations. As Terry High School focuses this month on perseverance and renewal, Dr. King’s life reminds us that real progress requires both the courage to keep going and the willingness to believe that change is possible.
Dr. King stood for justice, equality, and unity, even in the face of opposition, setbacks, and personal sacrifice. His work was not easy, quick, or without struggle. Yet he persevered—choosing hope over frustration and action over silence. He believed that even when progress felt slow, moving forward was still necessary. That belief reflects what perseverance truly means: continuing to push onward and upward, even when the path is difficult.
Renewal was also central to Dr. King’s message. He challenged people to reflect, reset, and recommit—to better choices, stronger character, and a greater sense of responsibility to one another. Renewal is not about erasing the past; it is about learning from it and choosing to move forward with purpose. For students, renewal might look like starting a new semester with a fresh mindset, setting new goals, or responding differently to challenges than before.
As Bulldogs, we are called to live out these values daily—showing perseverance in our academics, our relationships, and our personal growth. When we struggle, we reset. When we fall short, we learn. And when the road gets tough, we keep moving onward and upward, knowing that growth happens through effort and reflection.
Dr. King once reminded us that “the time is always right to do what is right.” This January, may we honor his legacy not only in words, but through our actions—by choosing perseverance, embracing renewal, and committing ourselves to becoming the best versions of who we are meant to be.
🎉 Celebrating Bulldog Achievement Week 🎉
This week, we are proud to host several on-campus celebrations honoring our students’ academic success during the first semester. Throughout Achievement Week, we recognize Bulldogs who have earned the Principal’s List for second term and first semester, Honor Roll for second term and first semester, ACT Achievement, ACT WorkKeys Medals, and ASVAB Achiever distinctions.
We also want to celebrate students who may not yet be at their goal but are making meaningful progress toward improving their benchmark scores. Growth matters, and hard work deserves recognition. We are incredibly proud of all our Bulldogs and the dedication, perseverance, and effort they show every day. Keep pushing forward—your achievements, big and small, make Terry High School shine. 🐾

Applications are being accepted for the Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) Junior Student Representative position for students who will be a high school junior in 2026-27 school year. Deadline to apply is Jan. 30, 2026.
This marks the eighth year of the Student Representatives of the Mississippi State Board of Education program, in which a high school junior and high school senior serve on the SBE as non-voting members. A junior representative is selected each year following an extensive application process. After serving for one year, the junior rep moves to the senior student rep position. 🐾 Sophomore Spotlight: Building Your Future Starts Now!
Sophomore year might seem like it’s just the “in-between” — you’re not brand-new like freshmen and not yet gearing up for senior year. But here’s the secret: this is the year that sets the foundation for everything ahead.
Think of sophomore year as your launch pad. Your grades this year count toward your GPA, which colleges and scholarship committees will notice. Now is also the perfect time to explore your interests — take challenging classes, join clubs, volunteer, or shadow a professional in a field you’re curious about.

💡 Counselor Tip:
Start a “Future File” — a simple folder or Google Doc to save your achievements, awards, and activities. You’ll thank yourself when it’s time to build a résumé or apply for scholarships junior and senior year!

American Legion Magnolia Girls State
The American Legion Auxiliary is proud to host annually the largest young women's leadership conference in the magnolia state of Mississippi. Established in 1936, Girls State provides students, having just completed their junior year in high school, with an intensive week studying responsible citizenship, government, and leadership. The citizens will spend a week self-governing within their assigned municipality by electing officials, debating bills, and solving community problems. They should leave the week with a better understanding of local and state government, and how to be an active citizen within their communities.
Packets can be found for Girl State Online or in the Counselor office. There are fees associated with this camp.
American Legion Boys State
The American Legion is dedicated to strengthening America. We believe there is no better way to this end than to work with our nation’s youth in order to prepare them for the tasks they will face in the years to come. The American Legion, through its youth activities programs, plays a leading role in the development of tomorrow’s informed, responsible citizens. The American Legion’s programs of Boys State and Boys Nation are our finest examples of citizenship instruction for youth. Boys States are quite uniform in program structure through each Department (state) of the American Legion. Forty-nine states and the District of Columbia conduct a Boys State program annually and more than 28,000 young men participate in these civic workshops each year. Through the week-long program, the young citizens learn how city, county and state governments function by actually doing the job themselves. Eligibility for all Boys State citizens requires them to be juniors in high school, with one year remaining before their graduation. This allows the young man the opportunity to apply his “practical experience” in government to his senior year in high school, and at the same time endorse and promote the program among fellow students.
Packets can be found for Boys State Online or in the Counselor office. There are fees associated with this camp.
