Dear Hawthorne Brook Families,

It is hard to believe that October is upon us. Your children are nearly halfway through first term- at the end of next week, students will begin their third mini-term. Two weeks from today, your children will bring home their progress reports for term 1!

One of the best parts of middle school is seeing our students challenge themselves to try new things. Our Cross Country team is a prime example of that- several of our runners have never raced before. How brave these students are to try something new! Whether they place first or last, it is amazing to see students supporting each other as they learn a new sport.

As we move into our first full week of October, please note that next Friday is a half day of school. Dismissal will be at 11:05.

Warmly,

Chantele Olmstead & Jason White

Calling All Artists!

The Lions International Peace Poster Contest gives students the opportunity to use their creativity to share their vision of peace with the world. This year’s theme is “Harmony in Humanity.”

Students who are 11, 12, or 13 years old as of November 15 are eligible to participate through HBMS and the Townsend Lions Club. Students will create an original piece of artwork showing what “Harmony in Humanity” means to them. Deadline is October 15th!

Please see Mrs. Rheault if you want a poster kit, or email crheault@nmrsd.org with any questions

A few important rules:

  • Artwork must be 13" × 20" to 20" × 24" (The kit includes this size paper)

  • No words, letters, or numbers may appear on the front of the poster

  • Artwork must be original student work — AI-generated artwork is not permitted

  • Artwork must be 2D with no glued, stapled, or attached objects

  • Paint, pencils, crayons, charcoal, and other flexible materials may be used

  • Posters may not be folded, framed, laminated, or mounted

  • Deadline for your poster is October 15th, submit your work to Mrs.Rheault.

This is a great opportunity for students to express their creativity, share their ideas about peace, and have their artwork recognized beyond HBMS!

Cross Country Update

The HBMS Cross Country team had an incredible showing against Murdock, with both the girls' and boys' teams taking home victories.

The girls' team won for the second meet in a row! Estelle led the way, finishing first overall and beating the next runner by more than a minute. Greta finished 2nd, Addison took 3rd and Grace finished 4th. Giulianna had a fantastic race, followed by Astrid and Evelyn.

The boys' team also came away with a big victory. Wyatt finished first overall. Ryan finished 3rd, while Haakon, George and Royce finished 4th, 5th and 6th respectively, with only 10 seconds separating these three runners. Leandro and Elijah also finished strong.

Congratulations to the entire HBMS Cross Country team! What an impressive day of running, teamwork and determination.

Essay Contest

The Townsend VFW holds a Patriot Pen essay contest every fall. HBMS has had several winners in the past! If your child is interested in entering, please refer to this folder of information. Essays are due on October 30th.

MCAS Family Portal

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) created an MCAS Family Portal which allows caregivers to be able to access information about their child’s participation in MCAS Testing. Information was sent out this summer to families whose children participated in the MCAS testing. This platform replaces the hard copy MCAS results that have been traditionally sent to you in previous years with your child’s MCAS results. The final MCAS results are now available in the MCAS Family Portal and you should be able to access the platform to download individual student reports.

If you have not created an account yet, follow the steps below:

Go to https://mcasfamilyportal.emetric.net

To create an account, you will need

  • your student’s registration code (you can find your student’s code in the North Middlesex ASPEN family portal - in the Family top tab, Details side tab for each student. The MCAS Registration Code field is in the bottom right corner of the page); and

  • your student’s date of birth.

Need Help?

  • First, view the Quick Start Guide at www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/family-portal.

  • Next, see the MCAS Family Portal Help Guide, also at www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/family-portal, which shows you step by step how to

  • create an account;

  • add your student to your account; and

  • view your student’s test results.

If you have any questions or need help, please contact your student’s school main office. We are here to support you.

Calendar

Here is a link to the 26-27 calendar.

Cell Phones

School Committee updated the district cell phone policy, in accordance with a law that is making its way through the Massachusetts legislature. Cell phones/smartwatches/smartglasses are to be off and away for the day. Any student found with a personal device will have the device turned in to the main office. If this happens more than once, families will be asked to pick up the devices. The full text of the policy can be found here.

Help Wanted!

We are still looking to hire a lunch/recess monitor. If you are interested, or know someone who is, please have them apply to this job posting. It is a great job for someone who may want to work a couple of hours a day, but be home for their children after school!

High School Sports

Registrations for cross country, unified basketball, and field hockey are still open at the high school and at the middle school level there is still time to sign up for cross country and field hockey. If interested please sign up as soon as possible using the following link: https://students.arbitersports.com/north-middlesex-regional-school-district/2026-fall-athletic-registration-13 .
