Good Morning Fellow, Elks. It has been a busy couple of days. On Saturday afternoon as I was driving into Ouray to prepare for karaoke night, I could see smoke up on the mountainside. I thought to myself, ‘That’s not good’. By the time we finished up at 9:30 that night, the fire had grown to around 500 acres. Because of all the emergency activities, I had to drive the one lane gravel to go north toward home. I finally got home at 11:00 pm. Sunday morning, we started to prepare. We live at the far north end of Ouray County, so there was no need to worry about the fire getting as far as our home. This is where we show our true colors as Elks. Bette called the emergency evacuation center and offered anything that The Lodge could spare for food items. Lori and I cleared out our extra bedrooms to take in people that were evacuated from their homes. Jill got calls from other Elks Lodges offering help. I received a call from the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge offering help. It is for times like this that the Elks were created. We are here to help others. Everybody has different resources and skills. We all step up and help where we can. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was created to Provide relief: Support members and others in the community who were facing hardship. To Foster fellowship: to maintain a network of goodwill and brotherhood. And to Perform charitable acts: Our formal commitment to “Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity”. This fire is a tragedy, but it is an opportunity for Elks to step up and do what we were created to do.

SECRETARY’S CORNER:

An Elk Tribute To 4 th of July

By Unknown

On the fourth day of July, ‘neath freedom’s bright sky,

We Elks stand together with heads held high.

In lodges and hearts, from sea to sea,

We cherish the gifts of liberty.

With banners unfurled and pride in our stride,

We honor the brave who stood and who died.

Their courage, their vision, the risks they once took,

Are written in history’s enduring book.

But the story lives on—not just in the past,

It’s the work that we do, the vows that we have cast.

Through charity’s hand and justice’s might,

We carry their dream into modern light.

Brotherly love in the warmth that we give,

And fidelity shown in the lives that we live.

These are the values that make freedom real—

The heart of the Elks, the strength that we feel.

As fireworks burst in the summer’s night air,

Let’s honor our nation with purpose and care.

Let’s serve where there’s need, lend hope where it is thin,

For that’s how true patriots quietly win.

Let us raise up Old Glory with reverence anew,

As proud Elks united—steadfast and true.

May our words and our actions, in lodge and parade,

Reflect the great promise our forebears made.

So here is to the Fourth—with its spirit so high,

To the red, white, and blue waving bold in the sky.

From our Order, our hearts, from each lodge and each friend—

May freedom, like brotherhood, never shall end.

House Committee News House Committee News

Happy July~ We are all super excited to enjoy another fun filled 4th of July with our wonderful community. The House Committee is given the task to make sure everything in The Club runs smoothly and we make money to keep our Lodge up and running. We were informed by Grand Lodge that we need to increase profits. To ensure this happens, we need volunteers (always) for events, Friday Night Dinners, cleaning crews, trash disposal, bartenders, and many other fabulous things that need to be done around our beautiful Lodge. Please let us know if you can help in any way ! xoxo

My name is Linda Cannizzaro, I would like to teach

interested Elks members to play American Mahjong. Most

people need two lessons before they can play, it is a

complicated game but so much fun once you understand it.

I could teach lessons, groups of no more than 4 people, at

The Lodge. Once there enough of us interested in playing,

we could have tournaments.

I will only be in Ouray July and August this year so we would

have to do the lessons during that time.

If you are interested, please text me at 832-432-4346.
