1 Person 1% Better Everyday

Greetings Boulevard Families,

Finally, our cold spell is breaking! Students were able to enjoy the outdoors during lunch a few days this week, and the fresh air was a welcome change.

We also celebrated our K–2 Second Quarter Awards. Students were recognized for their Learner Powers and outstanding attendance. Their excitement and pride in their accomplishments were evident, what a wonderful reminder that effort, persistence, and daily growth truly matter.

Let’s take a look at the learning happening across our building this week.

🟢 Kindergarten

Mathematics Focus

Ohio Learning Standard:
K.OA.A.1 – Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds, acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.

Students are:

  • Counting sequentially to 96 as a whole group. The 100th day celebration is Tuesday!

  • Engaging in math centers focused on addition equations, ten-frames, and story problems.

  • Participating in digital math practice through Zearn.

  • Observing teacher modeling on how to write an addition equation from a visual word problem.

  • Building and writing number sentences using manipulatives (frogs on logs).

  • Writing number sentences from real-life story problems.

Our kindergarteners are strengthening both their conceptual understanding (what addition means) and procedural skills (writing equations accurately).

Parent Tip:
At home, use everyday objects (snacks, toys, steps on the stairs) to create simple addition stories. Ask your child, “How can we show that with a number sentence?” Connecting math to real life builds lasting understanding.

🔵 First Grade Small Groups

Foundational Literacy Skills

Ohio Learning Standard:
RF.1.3 – Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Students are:

  • Taking turns reading and applying phonics rules.

  • Actively participating in finger stretching and blending to decode words.

  • Identifying vowel teams and short vowel patterns.

  • Using highlighters to identify target sounds in text.

Students are strengthening decoding automaticity and applying phonics knowledge directly to reading tasks.

Parent Tip:
When your child reads at home, ask them to “tap and stretch” tricky words before blending them smoothly. Encourage them to look for vowel teams and familiar spelling patterns.

🟣 Second Grade Small Groups

Phonemic Awareness & Word Study

Ohio Learning Standard:
RF.2.3 – Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Students are:

  • Manipulating phonemes and graphemes on whiteboards.

  • Identifying sound changes between word transitions.

  • Demonstrating understanding of removing or substituting phonemes.

  • Engaging in peer-supported partner reading.

These activities strengthen students’ ability to manipulate sounds within words—a critical skill for fluent reading and spelling.

Parent Tip:
Play simple sound substitution games at home. For example: “Say cat. Now change the /c/ to /h/. What word do you get?” This builds strong phonemic awareness in a fun way.

🟡 Third Grade

Multi-Step Problem Solving in Mathematics

Ohio Learning Standard:
3.OA.D.8 – Solve two-step word problems using the four operations and represent problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.

Students worked through a multi-step word problem involving subtraction and division to determine the number of gallons of paint per bucket. They:

  • Solved a guided problem together.

  • Applied the process collaboratively in groups.

  • Used their High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) math workbook to support reasoning.

Students are developing mathematical perseverance and precision as they break down complex problems into manageable steps.

Parent Tip:
When your child encounters a word problem, encourage them to:

  1. Identify what the question is asking.

  2. Underline key numbers.

  3. Decide what operation is needed.

  4. Check their answer for reasonableness.

This structured approach builds confidence and problem-solving stamina.

📅 Mark Your Calendars

Our Annual Wax Museum Presentations will take place on Thursday, February 19th, followed by a soul food buffet after the presentations.

Students are currently researching influential Black Americans who have made significant contributions to our history. On the day of the event, students will rehearse for their peers before presenting to families and guests.

This is always a powerful and meaningful event for our school community—we look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you for your continued partnership in helping our students grow 1% better every day.

With appreciation,
Principal Mahoney-Curry

Directora Mahoney-Curry
