Middle School Students You Should Know

District 62 middle school students were recognized at the May 18 Board of Education Meeting as part of the Middle School Students You Should Know recognition program.

Students were recognized in three different categories:

• Curiosity: A curious student has a desire to learn and understand what’s happening in the classroom as well as the world around them. This student goes above and beyond, embracing a love of learning, challenging the status quo with thoughtful questions. Curiosity is about the relentless pursuit of knowledge and discovery.

• Compassion: A compassionate student turns empathy into action. They are thoughtful and observant, making sure that others are included. This student gives to the community, supports his/her peers or possesses a deep, reliable kindness. Compassion is about putting the well-being of others at the forefront.

• Courage: A courageous student does the right thing, even when it’s incredibly difficult. Middle school can be a tough environment. This student embraces who they are. They might have overcome severe personal or academic obstacles or adversity or taken a risk to advocate for something or someone they believe in. Courage is about bravery, resilience and integrity in the face of fear or difficulty.

This position is new to Central Elementary School, created to support the needs of the school’s growing student population.

With 22 years of experience as a school psychologist, including more than 14 years in District 62, Oklepek has had the privilege of serving several elementary schools, including Central, Iroquois Community School, Cumberland, and most recently, Terrace. Throughout her career, Oklepek has developed strong relationships and gained extensive experience in multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), special education, instructional and inclusive practices, and collaborative problem-solving to support the diverse needs of students. Communications Communications

Board of Education

Board Member Tina Garrett commended Episode 8 of the A Few Minutes With Dr. Mike podcast that featured Stephen Samuelson, Executive Director of the GENCenter. Member Garrett noted that it made her emotional listening to the vision for the future.

Board President Liz Massa shared that she and Member Gene Haring attended the drone soccer expedition held at AMS. She found the experience to be very interesting and engaging for students. President Massa thanked Rivers Casino for helping to fund the program. President Massa attended the April retirement dinner that celebrated 22 retiring staff members. She has also attended various events in the district including National Junior Honor Society, band concerts and the Algonquin incoming sixth grade night.

Superintendent

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Amadei expressed frustration with the Rand Road Illinois Department of Transportation project. He thanked the City of Des Plaines as well as the Police Department for their support with managing traffic.

27 D62 athletes competed in Special Olympics this April taking home 9 bronze medals, 13 silver medals and 14 gold medals. Eleven athletes are invited to compete at ISU on June 13.

There are a large number of incoming Chippewa students expected this fall. The district is offering CMS parents the opportunity to transfer their students to Algonquin Middle School to help balance class size.

Dr. Amadei announced that middle school soccer will be coming to D62 this fall. It will be open for 7th and 8th grade students. Boys soccer will be running in the fall and girls soccer will be running in the spring. More information forthcoming.

Eighth grade promotion ceremonies are around the corner. The ceremonies will take place on the following dates and times:

  • 6 p.m., June 2, Chippewa Middle School at Maine West High School

  • 6 p.m., June 2, Iroquois Community School at the school

  • 6 p.m., June 3, Algonquin Middle School at Maine West High School

Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Mark Bertolozzi said that almost all the funds from Cook County have been distributed. Mr. Bertolozzi noted that free and reduced lunch numbers are lower. This is not an issue related to District 62, it is happening throughout the state. The impact of these lower numbers is lower Title I funding. We are keeping an eye on this and will share updates.

Mr. Bertolozzi concluded his remarks by sharing the passing in early May of the district's lead architect Alan Armbrust. He was with the firm STR Architects. He was a very thoughtful and engaging partner and will be deeply missed. Mr. Armbrust was instrumental in getting the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District permit as part of the North Elementary School construction project. The district will miss his kindness, humor and thoughtfulness.

Dr. Amadei concluded his remarks by congratulating Vice-President Duckmann for recently earning her Master's in Philanthropic Studies.

Dashboard Report - Wellness Screenings 2025-2026

The district continues to invest in employee wellness in order to improve employee health, identify illness early, increase productivity, increase attendance and lower risk and cost. This program has been widely accepted and attended by all staff.

Annual wellness screenings have been offered to all staff members since 2008. Initially, screenings were offered to help offset the rising costs of insurance premiums. Addressing health concerns/conditions before they spiral out of control can cause a savings not only in the annual premium rate increases and policy experience (which drives the premium rates), but also in overall medical expenditures for a long term or serious health claim linked to lack of early treatment or intervention. Employees may choose between a screening or a visit to their personal physician.
