A Note From the Principal
Hey SIS Families!
It's that time of year....when we start putting all the end of the year wrap up plans in motion! What an incredibly fast, busy year of learning we have had!
Before we rush ahead to all the May things, let's have a little year in review!! Here's just a little of what we can say we did or shared together.
- We implemented our new Character Strong guidance curriculum, holding really purposeful Morning Meetings and following up on the monthly guidance lessons!
- Grew as readers, writers, and critical thinkers!
- 5th Grade enjoyed a trip to various Iowa City businesses and learned more about future career opportunities.
- Celebrated Read Across America Week
- Held one of the BEST EVER School-wide Halloween Parties!
- Implemented a building-wide Behavior Interventionist to support students emotional regulation.
- Teachers engaged in PD throughout the year to continue carrying out our Teach-to-Heal initiative.
- All students engaged in reading groups and/or book clubs throughout the year and made some really good progress!
- Implemented building-wide math interventions with Bridges curriculum.
- All students gained and utilized access to Dreambox math software and really grew their math thinking skills!
- 4th & 5th grades learned more about career opportunities from our 8th grade students with our Career Projects afternoon
- Implementation of a School-based Therapist
and the list goes on! It's been an amazing year and there is still so much more to come, including 5th grade's School of the Wild learning, 4th grade's Willowdeen Outdoor Learning Experience, Track & Field Day, and a few fun events to close out the year! (stay tuned!)
Keep reading so you don't miss all the details on what's to come!
Here's to a marvelous May!

Track & Field Day Info
A Note from Mr. Williams
Dear Parents,
The Solon Physical Education Department is sponsoring our annual track and field day for SIS students in grades 4-5. The event will be held at Spartan Stadium on Tuesday, May 21 from 11:30-2:50. Friends and families are invited to attend. Sportsmanship, effort, and self-esteem are emphasized. The event promotes physical, social, and cognitive development of children. In the event of threatening weather, officials will determine if it is necessary to postpone the event. The rain date will be Wednesday, May 22.
Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle (preferably one that will keep water cold), a healthy snack, and sunscreen. Tennis shoes and athletic wear are a must. Students are also being asked to wear a t-shirt that corresponds to the color of their classroom.
- 4E/5E: Wear Red
- 4A/5A: Wear Blue
- 4B/5B: Wear Yellow
- 4C/5C: Wear Orange
- 4D/5D: Wear Green
We are in need of parent volunteers for various field events and other jobs throughout the event. We cannot pull off an event like this without volunteers. Please sign up using the sign up genius if you can help.

SIS Library News
As the end of the year gets closer, we are starting our annual inventory. In order to finish before the end of the year, last book check out will be the week of May 6 and ALL books will be due by Friday, May 17th. Please check under beds and in cubbies for all those missing books! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
We would love to send all SIS students home for the summer with a gently used “new to them” book for the summer. In order to do so, we are seeking donations of upper elementary age appropriate books in good condition. We will sort the books and our hope is that in May students will be able to “shop” for a new book or two the week before school gets out for the summer. In order to sort the books, we ask that all books be dropped off at the SIS office by Friday, May 3rd. Any questions? Please contact me at msutton@solon.k12.ia.us.
