Being Friendly

For many Prekindergarten students this is the first mayor opportunity to relate to other children and adults outside their families. Teaching them how to interact politely while being assertive, will increase their chances to successfully make friends and advocate for themselves. When children relate well with others, they develop a sense of security and belonging that facilitates their adaptation to the school environment.

During my guidance lesson, the children are learning what it means to be friendly and how to respond to bullying behavior. They are learning about using good manners and kind words like please, thank you, you are welcome, sorry, excuse me, no thank you, and may I?

Also, they are learning that when faced with abusive behavior they can use their big voice and say: Stop, I don't like that, and then get help from an adult if they continue to be bothered or hurt.

Please, practice these words at home role playing different situations in which these can be used. Although, it may seem common sense for us to say these words, we need to be intentional about teaching young children these social skills that are going to be necessary for the rest of their lives.

Best wishes,

Friendship Song

Please practice polite words with your child singing the following song:

“I am friendly song” (to the tune of Are you sleeping Brother John? "Frere Jacques")

I am friendly, I am friendly, yes, I am; yes, I am

I say hello, I say goodbye, yes, I do

I am friendly, I am friendly, yes, I am; yes, I am

I say please, thank you, and your welcome, yes, I do

I am friendly, I am friendly, yes, I am; yes, I am

I say excuse me, sorry, and may I? Yes, I do (written by Myriam Baquero)
