Check out my license plate: EDUKTR

As the Superintendent of the Mohawk Trail and Hawlemont Regional School Districts, I am classified as an "administrator." But what I'd like for this community to know is that, first, I am an educator, as my license plate proclaims.

The best part of any work day is when I get to read a book to our youngest learners, observe ah-ha moments during a mathematics lesson, or hear deep discussion in an English class. I am here for the teaching and learning. I am here for the struggles and strides. I am here for the growth of each student in our districts.

There is real momentum to build on. Our grade 6 math redesign produced some of the strongest student growth we've seen in years. Our literacy work — school improvement goals for writing grades K–12, the thinkSRSD rollout across K–8, targeted small-group instruction K–6 — is sharpening how every student learns to think and write clearly. New inquiry-based curriculum in science and social studies is pushing our students to think critically about the world around them. Our instructional leadership teams and expanded principal coaching are giving teachers more consistent, more useful support in their own classrooms. And our anti-bias curriculum, growing this year into every K–9 classroom, along with the first steps of Portrait of a Graduate work, reflects something I'm proud of: we don't just teach content here; we teach students to think, to belong, and to lead.

As summer winds down, I have to admit, this is a favorite time of year for me. I look forward to everything that a new year brings and welcoming our staff, students and their families back to school.

Nurses and Care Across the District

We have a new Health Services section of the district webpage. It may be accessed here: https://www.mtrsd.org/health-services

Our school nurses partner with families, staff, and healthcare providers on an array of health needs and to promote a safe and inclusive school environment. We value open communication and encourage families to connect with their school nurse with any questions or updates as we work together to support student wellness daily. Here are requests as the new school year begins:

  • Please send students with a water bottle to help them stay hydrated and focused throughout the day. There are filling stations and other access to water when students run out. Keep that water flowing!
  • In warm weather months, we’d love to see more children with sun protection, including sunscreen applied before arriving at school and hats for recess and outdoor activities.
  • During the winter months, boots, hats, gloves, and warm outerwear are expected.

Your care team includes:

Donna Weber, District Nurse Leader and Mohawk Trail Regional School Nurse
Kat Brow, Colrain Central School Nurse
Mary Paige, MTRSD/HRSD Float Nurse
Julie Senecal, Hawlemont Regional School Nurse
Mikaela Whitaker, Sanderson Academy School Nurse
Beth Wolfram, Buckland-Shelburne Elementary School Nurse

Communication Through the Bright Arrow ParentHub App Communication Through the Bright Arrow ParentHub App

Scan this QR code with your phone to download the app!

Download the App to Stay in the Know

The Bright Arrow messaging application is the tool we are using across the districts for mass communications. This service provides a platform to communicate from our schools to our families through email, texts, phone calls and a central app called Bright Arrow ParentHub. You may download it here or scan the QR code to access the app. Messages will still come via text, email, and/or phone call as determined by the sender AND appear in the app. Messaging is most effective when all of YOUR contact information is updated.

One benefit to using the app is that it centralizes messages, no matter the way they have been sent, so that they don’t get missed in your email inbox or text threads. You will notice that the sender is clearly labeled on each message. Another feature is that, when the message is open, the app indicates its original format - an email, text or call - with identifying icons at the top.

The app will ask you to create a login (or log in with your Google account), and then add your other email addresses and phone numbers to which you may receive communications. A verification protocol follows in which a code is sent that you will then copy and paste into the app. You may make updates inside the app under Menu - Settings - My Phones and Emails.

Note: Users are encouraged to download the latest version called Bright Arrow ParentHub. In your list of apps, it will organize itself under the name “ParentHub” - look for it under “P” not “B.”
