Battle of the Books Update

Battle of the Books...

Our Battle of the Books team is going to be gearing up soon, so 4th/5th teachers, be on the lookout for info coming soon!

If you have a current fourth or fifth grader who may be interested in joining the team this year, here is the book list. It is recommended that they read each book at least once, preferably more than once, to ensure the information "sticks", so getting an early start is a HUGE benefit! You can also send them down to me if they have questions. We will have an interest meeting this month to begin our team, just like we did last year, and I'll share that info via ClassDojo and social media when the time comes. Thanks!

School News Team

Our news team is up and running! Please help your students remember to arrive on time. Latecomers do not get their preferred jobs, and it delays production, so we appreciate everyone on news team getting to the newsroom at 7:30.

Be sure to follow our NES News Team channel for the latest news episodes. We also post the most recent episodes on our school website.

Podcasting Club

Do you enjoy listening to the latest true crime podcast? Do you have students who are interested in creating digital content? I am looking for interested students and teachers who may want to do some podcasting with me. I would love to have regular episodes, with content created by our students, for our students. For those kids who don't want their face on the news, this is a great way to do something really neat and still share facts, ideas, and important information with our school.

We also got a grant for a set of 30 podcast listening devices called "The Walking Classroom"! For more info and training on how to get started with this, please reach out to me so I can help you get started. This is a really cool way to get kids up out of their chairs and classrooms, being physically active while also learning grade level content. It includes quizzes, supplemental slides, and teacher guides for each episode to make this a really easy thing to add to your regular instruction. Check out this link for more details!

Tech Tidbits...

Blocksi Update:

I know y'all have been eagerly awaiting this information in grades 2-5! In case you missed the email from Mike McKay, please check out this link for more info on Blocksi tutorials and how to get started. Please let us know if you need support.

Login Reminders:

Please remember to keep student information secure. Use the info on the graphic (at right) to help guide you in this process. We are legally required to keep student data secure, and these tips are how we do that.

AI Teacher Support Tools:

Looking for some EASY ways to incorporate AI into your lesson planning? Check out magicschool.ai, Ideogram.ai, or the "Brisk" Google Chrome add-on extension.

πŸ”‘MagicSchool.ai helps create lesson plans tied directly to your standards, science labs, teacher jokes, rubrics, and many other useful tools. It is specifically designed to support educators, and it is pretty robust! I am happy to help you get started if you have questions about these tools!

πŸ”‘Brisk is an awesome tool that helps with text leveling, giving feedback, and more, and has the option to help you write lessons or create resources related to informational resources online. Check out this link for more on how to use this awesome resource!

πŸ”‘Ideogram.ai is another really cool tool that creates visuals based on text descriptions. You could create individualized name plates, visuals for instructional tools, and more, based on the descriptors you include. You are only limited by your imagination with this one!

Staff Survey:

Mr. Daniels and I are working to create some great tech PD opportunities for our staff, but we want to make sure what we are offering is what you actually WANT, so please fill out this short survey so we know what you want and need for this year! CLICK HERE

Have YOU tried the Novel Effect app yet?

This app is all treats, no tricks--perfect for spooky season! I have begun stickering the books in the library that are included on Novel Effect, so if your students get a book with that logo/sticker on the front, it means they can read it with the app, and it adds fun music and sound effects to enhance the storytelling experience. They are always creating more fun read-alouds, and you can even submit requests for your favorites that aren't in the app yet. Below is a suggested calendar schedule of some great choices. Check it out!

Accessing Books from the NC Kids Digital Library | Scribe

EVERY student in Carteret County Public Schools has access to this resource. I am showing an example of researching famous people for biographies, but you could also remind your students that this is a tool for them to access eBook versions of popular library books when the physical library books are already checked out.

Hey, podcast people! Check this out!

To foster interaction with other librarians and educators around the world, I have recently started my own podcast, and I'm working to share things related to books, libraries, and education on a sort-of-weekly basis. I generally release new episodes on Monday evenings, and sometimes include interviews with special guests. If you enjoy podcasts, or know a librarian or book lover who might enjoy this, please take a listen and feel free to share!
