Muckleshoot Tribal School
January 2026 Newsletter
Chief School Administrator
We hope everyone had a fantastic winter break. As we move into the new year of 2026, a new cell phone policy will go into effect on January 12, 2026.
Policy and Procedure 3245 - Student and Telecommunication Devices is essential to support student learning and mental health. This policy provides guidelines that restrict the use of telecommunication devices but do not ban them altogether from the MTS campus.
MTS staff will be working with students to inform them of the new policy and procedure through assemblies and classroom presentations during the first week of January 5, 2026.
Cell Phone Policy
Elementary-
Welcome back to the start of the 2026 calendar year! We are so excited to start the month of January back together. Before winter break students took time to participate in cultural activities, visited Santa, and received a free book. Please take time to ask your student what book they received.
As we shift our focus to the new year we want to start off strong academically. Classrooms will be reviewing MTS expectations around behavior, cell phones, attendance, and anti-bullying.
In addition, students will be completing a winter diagnostic that will demonstrate all the growth they have accomplished so far this school year. Winter diagnostic testing will be completed during the week of January 12th - January 16th. It is important that students show up to school each and every day. January is a great time to start winning attendance incentives for attending school.
This month's character trait focus is being KIND. This means showing respect and compassion to others through words and actions. A true leader uplifts those around them. Teachers will be nominating students so make sure you show up to school while demonstrating kindness towards others.
In Elementary school we place a large emphasis on reading. We encourage families to read with students for 30 minutes per night at home. Starting in January students will participate in an Accelerated Reading Program. Students will read books and answer questions demonstrating understanding of the story. Students will earn points as they work towards positive incentives at school. Students are encouraged to read at home and at school in order to earn points towards their goals.
Crystal Mountain - Mrs. Carissa's 3rd Class

Crystal Mountain Project Safety Guidelines
As your child prepares to participate in the Muckleshoot Tribal School’s Crystal Mountain Project at Crystal Mountain Resort, we want to share a few important reminders to help everyone have a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience. Mountain days are active and weather conditions can change throughout the day, so safety is essential.
Please help your child be prepared by focusing on the following before and after program days:
- Sleep: A good night’s rest is essential for energy, focus, and safety.
- Food & Hydration: Support nourishing meals and proper hydration.
- Clothing: Dress in warm, weather-appropriate layers that are movable and comfortable for wearing under snowpants and coats (such as leggings, sweat pants, fleece sweaters, etc.) Avoid jeans, Crocs, etc.
The Crystal Mountain Project provides:
- All snow gear (boots, snowpants and coats, gloves, hats, neck scarfs, etc.)
- Hot lunch, snacks, and water throughout the day
- Morning ski/ride lessons with Crystal Mountain staff
- Afternoon outdoor learning lessons

Secondary
Dear Families,
Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope you and your family had a restful and enjoyable winter break. As we begin January, we are excited to welcome students back and start the new year strong.
The first weeks after break are an important time for us to reestablish schoolwide expectations, routines, and a positive learning environment. Our staff will be reviewing behavioral expectations with students to ensure classrooms remain focused, respectful, and supportive for all learners.
As part of this work, we will also be reinforcing our new cell phone policy. You should have already received a copy of the new policy, which is designed to minimize distractions and maximize instructional time during the school day. We appreciate your partnership and support as we implement this consistently across campus.
If you have any questions or would like clarification about the cell phone policy or school expectations, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. I am always happy to connect.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to a strong and successful start to 2026.
Thank you,
Richard Brownell
Principal

Student Support & Prevention: Behavioral Health on Campus
Happy New Year, MTS families and community! As we welcome in 2026, our plant teacher for January is Cottonwood, a reservoir of water, who teaches us about being a wellspring.
Check Yourself: In January, we will continue our annual "Check Yourself" health screening for all 9th and 11th-grade students. You will receive a letter with more details by mail. This 15-minute screening covers physical health, relational health, substance use, and mental health. Student identities are protected, and results are viewed only by the Health & Counseling Team. If a result indicates that support is needed, a member of the Health & Counseling team will meet with the student to collaboratively determine what supports and services may be beneficial. Parents/caregivers may be asked to join a brief intervention discussion.
Here are the substance use results from the past four years of “Check Yourself”, representing a total of 217 surveys. These numbers represent student self-reports.
84% of MTS high school students report no substance use in the past year, including vaping
85% of MTS high school students say they are unlikely to use cannabis, weed, or dabs this year
90% of MTS high school students say they are unlikely to drink alcohol this year
