Dear Amazing Tiger Families and Community,

What an absolutely spectacular way to end this incredible month! I'm inspired by the bold words of Eleanor Roosevelt: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do." This month, our Tigers have done things they thought they couldn't do, performed on stage, prepared for assessments, shared their voices, and stepped outside their comfort zones. Every courageous woman throughout history started by doing something she thought she couldn't do. Let's continue encouraging our Tigers to face their fears, embrace challenges, and discover their own strength. That's how courage grows!

๐Ÿ“š Black Authors in Excellence - Tremendous Success!

Huge thank you to Ms. Washington for her exceptional leadership in organizing Black Authors in Excellence!

What an incredible turnout! It was absolutely amazing to witness our CMIT South authors from Elementary all the way to High School, proving that writing and publishing knows no age limits! Every author demonstrated tremendous courage by sharing their voices and stories with our community.

Missed the Event?

You can still support our amazing CMIT authors! Check them out and purchase their books:
Meet Our Black Authors in Excellence

When you purchase from our CMIT authors, you're supporting local talent, encouraging future writers, and celebrating the courage it takes to share your voice with the world.

Thank you to everyone who attended and celebrated our authors! Ms. Washington, your dedication to literacy and celebrating our community's talent is truly appreciated!

๐ŸŽญ Aladdin Performance - Pure Magic!

Thank you to the Drama and Chorus Club for their absolutely AMAZING performance of Aladdin!

Special Recognition:

  • Ms. Crusoe - Your leadership and vision brought this magical production to life!

  • Dr. Duncan - Your musical direction created beautiful harmonies and unforgettable moments!

  • Our talented student performers - You were SPECTACULAR! Your courage, commitment, and talent shined brilliantly on stage!

It takes tremendous courage to memorize lines, sing in front of audiences, perform choreography, and bring characters to life on stage. Our Drama and Chorus Club members demonstrated bravery, dedication, and pure excellence. What a phenomenal way to showcase the arts at CMIT South Elementary!

๐ŸŒธ Happy Spring Break!

Enjoy your well-deserved Spring Break!

Our Tigers have worked incredibly hard this semester, and it's time to rest, recharge, and create beautiful memories with your families. Whether you're traveling, relaxing at home, or exploring local adventures, take this time to:

  • Rest and recharge your minds and bodies

  • Spend quality time with loved ones

  • Pursue hobbies and interests outside of school

  • Read for pleasure and keep those literacy skills strong

  • Stay safe and take care of each other

We'll see you all back at school on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, refreshed and ready to finish the year strong!

๐Ÿ“… Important PGCPS Calendar & Schedule Updates

As shared during the March PTO meeting, we have several important updates regarding the PGCPS calendar and our school's daily schedule. We understand that calendar changes can impact family schedules, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and flexibility during this time. Our priority remains maximizing learning while meeting state requirements following recent instructional disruptions caused by winter weather.

PGCPS Calendar Updates

The Maryland State Board of Education has approved a waiver allowing Prince George's County Public Schools to adjust the school calendar to recover instructional time lost to weather closures.

NEW Last Day of School: Thursday, June 18, 2026

The following dates will now be FULL INSTRUCTIONAL DAYS:

  • March 27th โœ…

  • April 22nd

  • May 27th

  • June 15th

  • June 16th

  • June 17th

  • June 18th

Please mark your calendars and adjust any summer plans accordingly. These additional days ensure we meet Maryland's instructional hour requirements and provide your children with the full learning experience they deserve.

CMIT South Elementary Daily Schedule Adjustment

Effective Tuesday, April 7, 2026, through Thursday, June 18, 2026

To support the recovery of instructional time with minimal disruption to families, CMIT South Elementary School will adjust its daily schedule slightly.

NEW Morning Schedule:

  • Instructional day starts: 7:55 AM (instead of 8:00 AM)

  • Gates close: 7:55 AM sharp

  • After 7:55 AM: You must enter through the front door

  • Students are tardy: After 8:00 AM

Why This Matters: This small 5-minute adjustment allows us to regain valuable instructional time while maintaining consistency and predictability for students and families. Every minute counts in ensuring our Tigers receive the quality education they deserve!

What This Means for Families:

  • Plan to arrive at school 5 minutes earlier starting April 7

  • Adjust morning routines to accommodate the earlier start

  • Remember that gates close at 7:55 AMโ€”arriving after that requires front door entry

  • Tardiness is recorded after 8:00 AM

We recognize this requires adjustment to your family routines, and we deeply appreciate your flexibility and cooperation!

As we head into a well-deserved break, we wish all of our families a safe and restful time to relax, recharge, and enjoy time together. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to reset and return ready for continued learning and growth!

As we move into April, our schoolwide theme is Ambitionโ€”encouraging students to set goals, stay motivated, and believe in their ability to achieve great things. Families can support this at home by helping children set small, achievable goals (like reading each day or learning a new skill), celebrating effort and perseverance, and talking about the importance of not giving up when things feel challenging. Encouraging a growth mindset and praising hard work can go a long way in building confidence and ambition in our students.

We look forward to seeing everyone back refreshed and ready to finish the school year strong!

Dear Families,

Spring break is a perfect time to slow down, enjoy family time, and build in a few fun reading moments throughout the day. Itโ€™s also a great opportunity to keep reading skills strong in meaningful ways!

Encourage your child to read a little each dayโ€”this can be books, magazines, recipes, or even signs while youโ€™re out and about. Let your child choose what interests them to keep reading enjoyable and engaging. You can also read together by taking turns, asking questions about the story, and talking about favorite parts to build comprehension.

Simple activities like keeping a small reading journal, retelling stories, or practicing sight words can make a big difference. Even listening to audiobooks during car rides helps develop vocabulary and a love of storytelling!

A few minutes of reading each day will help your child return from break feeling confident and ready to learn. Happy reading, and enjoy your spring break! ๐Ÿ“šโœจ

Warmly,

Mrs. A. Matthews

Hello Kinder Families,

As we are entering warmer weather, many students have their allergies reawakened and sometimes it can be severe; if your scholar is one of those students and needs medication please remember to fill out a doctorโ€™s form for medication to go to the nurse. Also families, please have your scholarโ€™s shoes tied when they come to school and continue to assist your scholar in their efforts of learning to tie their shoes independently. Students should have a school approved sweater or jacket to wear in the classroom, in case they get chilly.

Please remember when your child has been absent please communicate to the teacher and complete the online document submission form, because we are not taking paper notes: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1lp2fJsfDLjWNINllvX10OKjiGDn443yAB8Hq8BMBa-E/viewform

Exciting news please save the date for our next planned out of school field trip. The next field trip should take place on April 24, 2025 and will have students learn and explore the MD Science Center in Baltimore, Maryland. This would conflict with Vocabulary Parade so Kindergarten would not be able to participate as we would have to leave early in the school day. Under the information about the parade vocabulary words that we have used and learned throughout the year have been included so that you can still review them with your scholar(s).

Families we ask that if you have received your approval email to chaperone/ volunteer that you have let Ms. Resse know by filling out the Volunteer/Chaperone Google Form, if you have not already. Please complete and upload your saved PGCPS approval email to the form above. Youโ€™ll need to request access, and Ms. Reese will share it with you. This is the final step. We will only be reaching out to these families for any volunteer or chaperone concerns.

When we return, we will continue to work through Topic 5! Students will be working on finding unknown numbers, determining if equations are true or false, adding three numbers, and solving addition and subtraction word problems.

Families can support learning at home by practicing math in everyday situationsโ€”such as counting objects, solving simple problems during meals or playtime, and asking your child to explain their thinking. You can also create quick โ€œtrue or falseโ€ equations, play missing number games (like 5 + __ = 8), or make up simple word problems together.

Keeping practice short, fun, and encouraging will help build your childโ€™s confidence and strengthen their understanding. Thank you for supporting your childโ€™s learning at home!

Science Updates:

We are working through topic 1 on light and sound! Students are investigating how sound is made, observe different sources of light, and explore how light interacts with various objects.

Families can support this learning at home through simple, hands-on activities. Encourage your child to notice and describe sounds around the house, create simple instruments, or explore how sounds change. You can also observe different light sources, play with shadows using a flashlight, and test household objects to see which ones let light pass through or block it.

Encouraging your child to ask questions, make predictions, and share what they notice will help build their curiosity and understanding. Thank you for supporting science learning at home!

While rest is important, itโ€™s the perfect time to:

  • Revisit previously learned skills to keep them sharp. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ก

  • Read together for 20 minutes a day. ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ“–

  • Refresh those math facts so they stay "sticky"! ๐Ÿ”ขโž•

Letโ€™s keep our minds refreshed and ready for the final stretch. The countdown to third grade has officially begun! ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ๐Ÿ

Reading Updates:

Spelling Bee Buzz!

We hope you are all looking forward to a wonderful, relaxing break! Just a little "heads-up" for when we return: we will officially begin prepping for our Second Grade Spelling Bee as soon as we get back to school!

To keep those spelling muscles strong over the holiday, please encourage your student to:

  • Review previously learned spelling words from their folders.

  • Practice the words currently posted on our ClassDojo page.

Itโ€™s going to be a "bee-utiful" competition! Enjoy your time off, and happy studying!

Math Updates:

Just a quick heads-up as we head into our time off. Since our break falls right in the middle of Topic 5: Subtraction, we want to make sure everyone feels confident before the big test!

Our Plan for Return

When we get back to school, we will spend time reviewing all our strategies together before we take the Topic 5 assessment. No need to worry about forgetting anything over the holidays!

Keep Those Minds Sharp

To keep those math muscles strong while we're away, please continue to practice subtraction strategies at home. Whether it's using number lines, base-ten blocks, or mental math, a little bit of practice goes a long way!

We hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing break!

Science Updates:Spring Break Update: Earthโ€™s Changes!

When we return to the classroom, weโ€™ll be "digging" into our new chapter on Earthโ€™s Changes. From the slow-motion power of erosion to the sudden excitement of volcanoes and earthquakes, weโ€™re going to explore how our amazing planet is constantly shifting.

If youโ€™re looking for ways to keep those curious minds active over the break, check out the simple "Earth Explorer" activities below! See you soon!

๐Ÿ” Spring Break "Earth Explorer" Activities

To give your student a head start, here are four simple ways to see Earthโ€™s changes in action:

1. The "Rainy Day" Erosion Race

Next time it rains (or using a watering can in a garden), find a patch of dirt or a pile of sand. Watch how the water carves little paths.

  • The Lesson: This is a "slow change." Over thousands of years, this same process created things like the Grand Canyon!

2. Sugar Cube Weathering

Give your child a few sugar cubes and a small container with a lid. Have them shake the container for 30 seconds.

  • The Lesson: Notice how the sharp edges become rounded and "dust" forms at the bottom. This mimics how wind and water break down giant rocks into tiny pebbles and sand.

3. Kitchen "Tectonic" Toast

Spread some peanut butter (or jam) on a plate and put two pieces of bread on top, side-by-side. Push the bread together, pull them apart, or slide them past each other.

  • The Lesson: The bread represents Earthโ€™s plates. When they move, they create mountains, valleys, and earthquakes!

4. Search for "Cracks in the Sidewalk"

Take a walk around the neighborhood and look for plants growing through cracks in the pavement or old stone walls.

  • The Lesson: Even tiny roots are strong enough to break "rock" over time. This is a great example of how living things can change the Earth's surface.

Social Studies Updates:

When we return to the classroom, we will be closing out our Social Studies units and spending time reviewing all the fascinating topics weโ€™ve explored this year.

To help our scholars stay sharp, please take some time over the break to chat about and review the social studies lessons we've covered so far. Whether itโ€™s discussing community helpers, local history, or our maps and globes, a little refresh goes a long way!

Health Updates:

Growing Up Fast!

Just a quick update from Health class. We only have a few more topics to wrap up before school is over!

When we return, weโ€™ll be starting an exciting new unit on how our lives change from babies to adults. To get our second graders thinking about their own journey, we have some fun activities for over the break:

  • Take a trip down memory lane: Look through some old baby pictures together! ๐Ÿ‘ถ

  • Compare & Contrast: Talk about what life was like "back then" versus how it is now. What can they do now that they couldn't do as a baby? ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

  • Share Stories: Kids love hearing about their first words or favorite old toys! ๐Ÿงธ

We can't wait to hear all their stories when we get back. Enjoy the walk down memory lane! โœจ

Grade Level Blurb:

The third grade team and students were busy learning during the week as we anticipated the beginning of spring break. You could feel the excitement in the air as the week drew to a close. We hope all of you have a wonderful break. Take some time to rest and relax as the busy (and important) testing season will once again arrive as we return.

Reading Updates:

As students worked in their autobiography and biography unit in Reading, they read about Frederick Douglass, one of the most important leaders for the African American civil rights movement.

Students continued to work on r-controlled words in Spelling and irregular verbs in English.

Refining handwriting skills was also a topic practiced during the week.

Math Updates:

This week in math, we continued building our understanding of division and fact families. Students practiced identifying how multiplication and division are related, and explored how fact families help us solve problems more efficiently. We also connected these ideas to the properties of multiplication, strengthening their overall number sense.

Some of our mathematicians worked on understanding and calculating the area and perimeter of various polygons.

Science Updates:

In science, we carried on with our study of fossils. Students learned to distinguish between body fossils and trace fossils, and discussed what each type can tell us about organisms that lived long ago. We also explored examples and how fossils help scientists understand Earthโ€™s history.

Students also worked on continuing the weather unit. We also took time to participate in a weather scavenger hunt. The students enjoyed hunting for new and interesting weather facts hidden around the room.

Social Studies Updates:

Students continued to explore the causes and effects of the American Revolution. During discussions, they focused on slavery, freedom, labor, and how these topics connect to the U.S. Constitution.

Health Updates:

In health, we wrapped up our โ€œSay No to Drugsโ€ unit with student-created skits. The students did a wonderful job demonstrating what theyโ€™ve learned about making safe and healthy choices. They had a fantastic time performing, and it was great to see their creativity and confidence shine!

We also completed our end of unit assessment for the โ€œSafe Drugsโ€ unit. The students are eager to move on to our new unit after spring break.

Weโ€™ll see everyone on April 7th! :)

Grade Level Blurb:

Greetings Team 4Ward,

We are grateful for your ongoing support in helping our students succeed. Your involvement makes a real difference in their learning and well-being. We have made it to Spring Break!! This begins the final countdown till our scholars become 5th graders. During Spring Break all teachers will be unavailable and will not answer any emails until we return back from Spring Break. All students have activities to work on during spring break. These are designed to be engaging, manageable, and meaningful. Look for your studentโ€™s activity packet or digital assignment before the break; please encourage your child to complete a few activities to stay refreshed and ready for learning.

Writing is being incorporated in all subjects this year. Students will practice expressing ideas in reading, science, social studies, math, and specials. Encourage your child to talk about what they write and ask questions about their work that supports growth and confidence. Our Student Government Association has launched activities this week. Student leaders are already planning ways to support classmates and school spirit. Weโ€™re excited to see their ideas come to life and welcome family support at upcoming events.

๐Ÿ’ปMany class activities use online tools. A charged computer ensures your child can fully participate in lessons and complete assignments. Our students also need a pair of wired headphones to complete activities and for testing. Students who arrive on time are better prepared for learning and reduce classroom disruptions. Please plan to have your child at school a few minutes early each day. A healthy breakfast helps students focus and have energy for learning. School breakfast is available daily until 8:00 when students arrive in the morning.

In our classrooms, we will be working on a variety of assignments and projects designed to challenge and inspire them. We encourage you to check in regularly with your scholar about what they are learning.Your support at home is greatly appreciated and makes a significant difference in their academic success.

We are grateful for your ongoing support in helping students feel safe, prepared, and excited about learning. Thank you for partnering with us to make this a positive school year.

Warmly,

Team 4Ward

Reading Updates:

We have concluded Unit 4 in Volume 2 Impacts and will return back to Volume 1 to work with Unit 2 Adaptations. In this unit students will learn about how different living things adapt to the environment using informational and literature texts.

This Week:

We finished our realistic fiction story of โ€œMinn of this Mississippi.โ€ In this story we explored how a snapping turtle adapts to the challenges they face while surviving on the Mississippi River. Students were able to plot the events of the story this is formally know as a story map. We also had an opportunity to explain the changes that the character of Minn made throughout the story. Students concluded the week by taking a Word Study assessment on irregular plurals and completing their story quiz.

Next Week:

When we return back from Spring Break, we will begin our Poetry Unit. We will read a collection of poems that explore how animals adapt to living around a meadow. Students will also receive instruction on different styles of poetry writing to create their own poems. As we are reading the poems in the collection we will identify sensory details that poets use to share ideas. We will also identify the elements of poetry and how they are used in a poem. Our word study for this week will be Greek Root Words.

Math Updates:

In math, scholars are continuing to strengthen their number sense and problem-solving skills while working with division and multi-step problem solving.

Students have been learning to divide multi-digit numbers by one-digit numbers using a variety of strategies, including:

  • Area models

  • Partial quotients

  • Traditional long division

  • Using multiplication to check division

A major focus has been helping scholars explain their thinking and justify their solutions using math vocabulary and written responses in their math journals.

Students are also practicing how to:

  • Break apart multi-step word problems

  • Identify important information in a problem

  • Choose the correct operation

  • Explain their mathematical reasoning

We are also strengthening math literacy through Daily Reviews, problem-solving tasks, and math journals, which allow students to reflect on their thinking and analyze mistakes.

Parents can support learning at home by encouraging scholars to:

  • Explain how they solved a problem (not just the answer)

  • Practice multiplication facts regularly

  • Complete assigned IXL skills that reinforce division concepts.

Science Updates:

In science, scholars are exploring the unit Human Uses of Energy.

Students are learning how energy plays an important role in our everyday lives and how humans harness different energy sources to power technology and systems we depend on.

Topics we are exploring include:

  • Types of energy

  • How energy is transferred and used

  • Real-world examples of energy in transportation, electricity, and machines

  • How energy systems help communities function

Scholars are also engaging in research-based activities and project tasks where they apply math skills such as division, measurement, and data interpretation to scientific situations.

This interdisciplinary approach helps scholars see how math and science work together in real-world problem solving.

Skills We Are Building

Across both subjects, scholars are developing important academic habits including:

  • Perseverance when solving challenging problems

  • Explaining and defending their thinking

  • Collaborating with peers

  • Using academic vocabulary

  • Applying knowledge to real-world situations

Helpful Reminders for Families

Please encourage your scholar to:

  • Check Canvas regularly for assignments and resources

  • Complete IXL practice to reinforce skills

  • Bring their math journal to class daily

  • Ask questions when they need clarification

Social Studies Updates:

This week, we complete the last lesson in Chapter 3 which focuses on our rights and responsibilities as citizens. Students discovered how citizens participate in government and how this participation supports the community. We discussed the differences between rights and responsibilities and how we exercise them in our communities.

Next week, students will begin working on their quest by identifying an issue in their community. Once the issue is identified, they will be ready to write their letter. Students should remember to clearly identify the issue, explain why it is important, and describe how their local government can help address the problem.
