THE CAVALIER CHRONICLE
December 2024
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Don’t forget that that the Holiday Luncheon will be at our house on Sunday, December 29th. We have the gift exchange, donation for Pickens rescue, door prizes, a ham and a lot of other food plus our annual awards and achievements recognition
Please make sure you go out and process your membership renewals as the current one expires December 31st. If you are choosing to not renew, please give me a call (404-825-4825) so I can understand why. The club is for our membership and if we are lacking what is necessary to get you to stay as a member we need to adjust accordingly.
Please join me in welcoming Lisa Bunting and Kim Sloane as new members. We also want to welcome and thank Jack and Lori Bennett and Roger Smith and Lisa Barkow for moving to regular membership to from associate membership.
We also have our specialty coming up the first weekend in February that we will be reaching out for volunteers after the holidays. Our needs will include picking up judges at the airport, getting them to and from the show sight, selling catalogs and raffle tickets at the show sight. We are firming up exactly what the Saturday social will look like as we have run into a couple of obstacles, but nothing we can overcome. We will send out an email blast once we clear them up.
Our 2025 Puppy Picnic will me at the end of March at the Lawrenceville Kennel Club building. Moving it to here will allow us to hold on March 23rd, rain or shine. The picnic will start at 11am, but the eye and heart doctors would like to start at 10 am. This allows you to complete this important task and be done to allow you to fully enjoy the events of the picnic.
If you missed the deadline for acknowledging your achievements for 2024, please still submit them and we will post in the January newsletter. We don’t want anybody left out
Thanks
Jim

2024 HOLIDAY LUNCHEON INFORMATION
Please plan to join us on Sunday December 29, 2024 from 1pm to 4pm. This year we will having the luncheon at the home of club president, Jim Utych.
Please note the DATE. It is AFTER the Christmas holiday due to the way the calendar fell this year for the AKC National. Several of our club members will be attending the National so we did not want to hold the luncheon on the 15th. The 8th conflicted with another local dog show and the board felt that the 22nd was too close to the holiday. So we will keep the holiday spirit flowing!
This year, we will be serving up baked ham and ask that you bring a side to share with everyone. Plus some special items like a coffee and hot chocolate station, Christmas punch and sparkling grape juice at each table to toast the old and new year and more!
It’s a jam packed afternoon of door prizes, white cavalier gift exchange, awards and thank you’s, plus some great food and of course our UGLY SWEATER contest where a $25 buck gift certificate and bragging rights are up for grabs! Each year more and more members attend this fun event and we hope that you can this year!
Want to participate in the white cavalier gift exchange? Bring a wrapped unmarked gift of at least $20 or more (it can or cannot be cavalier related) and join in the fun. Participation is voluntary! Last year it got testy! LOL so join in the fun!
We also will be collecting donations of food (cat and dog), cat litter, stainless steel bowls, bleach, detergent, etc. for the Pickens County Rescue Ranch, a no kill shelter in Jasper GA. Please be sure to bring an item or a gift card to Petsmart, Walmart for the staff to use to help purchase food for the Rescue Ranch. Our club member Susan Kent devotes many hours each week to the Ranch and let’s show them how much the club supports everything they do.
2024 MEMBER RECOGNITION
At our holiday luncheon we will be recognizing the following people for their years of membership in the club with certificates and for our 20 year members, a special engraved award. We hope they will be able to attend our Holiday Luncheon and help us celebrate their membership achievements!
5 year memberships: LaVada McCosh, Hazel Linn, Leslie Lucas, Ed Lucas, Ashley Powell and Macrae Evans
20 year memberships: Rita Guest, John Guest
NEW TITLE HOLDERS FOR 2024
Has your cavalier achieved a new title in 2024? Celebrate it and share the news with the club!
Titles can be conformation, performance, obedience, trick dog, CGG, therapy, rally, agility, etc. We will list all the new titles in our December newsletter and also recognize them at the Holiday Luncheon! Send you information (dog’s name, title achieved) to Sharon Utych at utych@earthlink.net

WHAT CAN DOGS EAT DURING THE HOLIDAYS?
Copied from Whole Dog Journal by Kate Basedow, LVT
Published: October 29, 2024
Of course your dog can eat many plain unseasoned vegetables, but in case you’re wondering about Thanksgiving staples that your dog can have in moderation, we’ve got you covered:
- Turkey: Offer your dog a small amount of cooked meat. The skin is typically higher in fat and salt/seasonings, making it less ideal for your pup. Gizzards and organ meat are tasty treats for dogs who tolerate them, but they are also rich.
- Ham: Allow tiny pieces of cooked ham, avoiding fatty areas. Ham is typically both fatty and salty, so just give your dog a taste.
- Mashed potatoes: Plain mashed potatoes without too many things added in are safe for your dog, though she may not enjoy them, but skip the gravy.
- Carrots: Your dog can enjoy carrots cooked or raw! Ideally feed ones that are not heavily seasoned.
- Sweet potatoes: Offer to your dog plain, with minimal seasoning.
- Pumpkin: Plain canned pumpkin is an excellent healthy treat for dogs. Offer a teaspoon or so if your dog has not had it before. You can even make your dog’s own pumpkin treats.
- Pumpkin pie: Pumpkin pie has a lot more sugar than plain canned pumpkin, but your dog can have a small taste.
- Green beans: Plain, cooked green beans are an excellent snack for your dog.
- Cranberries: Plain and cooked cranberries are safe for your dog. If your family uses the classic cranberry sauce recipe of just cranberries, sugar, and water, your dog can even have a small taste of cranberry sauce (don’t go too overboard because of the high sugar content). If you add additional ingredients to your cranberry sauce, your dog should skip this dish.
CAUTION
Always remember that, while there are many holiday foods dogs can eat, err on the side of caution. Offer your dog small portions that do not have extra sugar or seasonings and avoid fatty foods.
The simplest option is often to set aside your dog’s “meal” ahead of time so you know exactly how much of each thing she will be getting. And if your pup has a sensitive stomach, save your carpets by not giving her any foods that she is not used to.
RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Sweet Potato Chews
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 3 hours
Makes: 40 chews
Ingredients
2 sweet potatoesInstructions
Preheat your oven to 250F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Use a knife or mandoline to cut the sweet potato into slices. I sliced mine into coins because my dog is small, but if you have a bigger dog you could slice them lengthwise for larger chews. You don’t want the pieces to be too thin, or they will just get crispy and not chewy, so make sure they are no thinner than ¼ inch.
Arrange them in a single layer on the baking sheets and bake for 2 ½ to 3 hours flipping once halfway through until they are shrunken, dried out, and some pieces are a bit crispy, while others are a bit chewy.
Let cool, then store in an air-tight container in the fridge for about 3 weeks.
