NHS Raider Update
November 8, 2024
Honoring Veterans; Veterans Day 2024
NHS will again be honoring Veterans with a Veterans Honor Wall. The display highlights veterans that have connections to current, and former students and staff. The wall will be fully on display beginning Monday, November 11th and throughout the week. The Veterans Wall will be displayed between the upper and lower cafeteria. Parents are welcome to stop by and view the space.
e-Learning Days 2024- practice day on November 27th
While we don't want to think about it quite yet, winter will arrive in Minnesota in the near future. While last year's winter was mild and caused no school cancellations, Minnesota winter weather has been known to disrupt our schedule. Some key items:
You can learn more about what goes into decisions to close school, start late, or dismiss early here.
The first full-day closure due to weather is a true "snow day."
The district uses e-Learning days for the second and subsequent full-day closures. You can read the e-Learning plan here.
This year, we are implementing a practice e-Learning day on Wednesday, Nov. 27. The purpose of the practice e-Learning day is:
To refamiliarize families, students, teachers, and staff with e-Learning day procedures without the pressure associated with early morning decisions.
To ensure families, students, teachers, and staff understand the sites they will need to use and have appropriate passwords readily available.
As with all e-Learning days, if you prefer your student not participate in the practice e-Learning Day, you may call them in as absent and it will count as excused.
We will follow our regular e-Learning procedures on Nov. 27.
Parent/Caregiver Cellphone/Device Feedback Survey
Hello NHS Parents/Caregivers,
I plan to send a talking points link directly to parents to learn more about how you view the success of the cellphone/device plan implementation at the ten weeks mark. Please take a few moments to share your thoughts and our team will compile and review results to determine next steps on the implementation plan. We built this plan with parent, student input and we will see it through with stakeholder engagement. The results from the survey will be share and utilized to make adjustments and continue to implement a successful plan.
Deadline: Friday, November 15

Principal Update: High School Reimagine
Dear NHS Students, Families and Staff:
Election 2024 reminds us of the power of our voice and the strength of democracy in action. Congratulations to the Northfield Public School stakeholders on the referendum results. As Dr. Hillmann, Superintendent of Schools, details in his family update, (linked here) we have an exciting challenge ahead of us. While we are planning for the future, the high school staff will remain focused on supporting our current students on their high school journey. We are excited about possibilities that will come with the reimagine plan and we are equally excited to shape a positive experience everyday for the students we currently serve.
The fall play begins tonight at 7:30 pm and continues through next weekend. See details later in the update. Girls swim and dive is the only fall sport still competing. They are competing in the second day of the section championships today!
Thank you for your continued support and confidence in the NHS team's capacity to serve in the honorable role as educators in your child's life.
It is a great day to be a Raider!
Sincerely,
Shane Baier
NHS Principal

Operation Joy Season!
It's Operation Joy season. For those of you new to Northfield, this is a holiday gift giving community tradition for over 50 years. Last year we supported over 1000 children from over 500 families in the Northfield community. The event this year will be Wednesday, December 11.
In the past few years many of you have also supported the program through
- staff adopting a family
- students raising funds
- collecting wrapping paper supplies - this is a HUGE help
- making fleece-tied blankets
All of it is very much appreciated. Reach out to confirm if you will be participating in any of these additional supports.
Registration has already begun.
Both registration and monetary donations are appreciated by Friday, November 15.
Fleece-tied blankets and wrapping paper supplies should be dropped off on Tuesday, December 10.
We will have posters ready next week if you are interested in hanging any up around your school.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for your support of this long shared community tradition.
