Malvern's Mission Statement
At Malvern, we are kind, curious and brave. We learn, grow and lead together.
🍎 Principal News 🍎
Malvern Families,
We have several exciting opportunities ahead for our Red Hawk families and hope you will join us in staying connected and engaged with our school community.
Our Scotty P’s Spirit Night will take place this Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. We encourage you to stop by and enjoy a meal while supporting Malvern. Be sure to mention Malvern Elementary when placing your order so our school receives credit. Events like this help strengthen our school community, and we always enjoy seeing our Red Hawks outside the classroom!
We are also excited to kick off our Read-A-Thon beginning March 2nd as we continue growing a strong culture of literacy at Malvern. Reading is one of the most powerful ways scholars build vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence as learners. When students read consistently, they strengthen critical thinking skills and develop a lifelong love of learning. Setting aside even 20 minutes of reading each evening, listening to your child read, and talking together about stories and new learning can make a meaningful difference in academic success.
Be sure to visit our Counselor’s Corner, where Mrs. Keys shares our March Character Trait of the Month along with helpful ideas families can use at home to reinforce positive character and leadership habits.
Thank you for your continued partnership in making Malvern a place where every scholar can learn, lead, and SOAR.
Check out the Malvern Messenger for news you can use.
Proud to be a Red Hawk,
Inetra Nelson, Principal & Melinna Herrera, Assistant Principal
Inetra Nelson, Directora y Melinna Herrera, Subdirectora
Change in Schedules this Week
On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, March 3 & 4, 2026, several of our scholars will have an opportunity to show their proficiency in the English language. Due to these assessments, our Red Hawks will be working on a slightly different schedule on testing days. If you plan to have lunch with your scholar this week, please note this schedule change on Tuesday and Wednesday. We appreciate your support.
Dear McKinney ISD Families,
As part of our ongoing series, Keeping Students Safe and Parents Informed, I am proud to share this month’s featured topic: MISD Lives Kind – A Legacy of Kindness.
We all know that a kind word, act, or deed can change someone’s day — and sometimes, a life. As the committee reviewed existing district initiatives, it became clear that kindness could serve as a unifying thread that strengthens learning, relationships, and school culture across every campus.
MISD Lives Kind is intentionally embedded into daily campus life through our district’s Six Strategic Pillars, particularly:
Pillar 1: Safety & Wellness, by supporting students’ emotional well-being, sense of belonging, and positive school climate
Pillar 4: MISD Family & Culture, by strengthening relationships among students, staff, families, and our broader community
Over time, Lives Kind has grown into a shared language that supports positive school climate, anti-bullying efforts, student leadership, mental health and well-being, strong staff culture, and meaningful family and community partnerships. Kindness is not only something we teach; it is something we model, practice, and reinforce together.
This work extends beyond our campuses through strong outreach partnerships with churches, mentors, our PTA and PTO organizations, and nonprofit partners who support students and families in times of need. Through this coordinated effort, McKinney ISD continues to strengthen the network of care surrounding our students.
Kindness matters because it shapes who students become. When kindness is practiced daily, it becomes part of who we are internally, and it can leave an impact that lasts a lifetime.
Thank you for partnering with us to reinforce kindness at home and in our community. When schools and families work together, we create environments where every student feels safe, valued, and connected.
With gratitude,
Shawn Pratt, Ed.D.

March's Character Traits are Cooperation & Responsibility
In March our scholars will learn Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw and the character trait of Cooperation (being responsible and doing your part).
Habit 7 - Take Care of Yourself
Ask your student these questions at dinner this month:
- What helped your body today?
- What did you learn?
- Who did you connect with?
- What did you create or play?
Try at Home: walk together, read 10 minutes, or family game night.
Cooperation & Responsibility
Dinner Questions
- How did you help someone?
- Did you finish a job on your own?
- When did teamwork help?
Try at Home: 5‑minute family clean‑up or cook together.
Keep Kindness Going
Give a compliment, help without being asked, and use calm words.
Thank you for partnering with us!
Student Well-Being
At Malvern, student well-being is a top priority. Throughout the year, our counselor provides age-appropriate lessons that help students recognize “big” feelings, identify trusted adults, and practice coping strategies. Each elementary campus also displays the required “You Are Not Alone” poster so students know support is always available.
Our approach to suicide prevention focuses on helping students:
- Manage their emotions
- Understand that tough moments are temporary
- Notice when someone may need help
- Know who they can trust
- Use healthy coping skills
- Find support when they need it
Thank you for partnering with us to support the emotional health of every Red Hawk. Please review MISD’s Suicide Prevention Parent and Guardian Newsletter by selecting the button below.
Visitors and Volunteers
MISD requires every visitor/volunteer to report to the office to sign in and receive a visitor badge. At the camera outside of the school, please state your name, show your ID, and explain why you are here at school.
A software system called “Hallpass School Visitor Management” is used to scan in visitors. A valid, unexpired state or government issued photo ID must be presented each time you visit, volunteer, or pick up a student. If you arrive on campus without your driver’s license, you will be asked to leave and return to campus when you have identification. A photocopy or photo on your telephone of your ID will not be accepted.
MISD requires that volunteers complete a criminal background check every school year. If you plan to volunteer anywhere in the building or chaperone a field trip, please complete the required volunteer application.
MISD will not offer a grace period this school year for you to complete your annual background check. All background checks must be completed and approved before you can serve on campus.
Hawk Squad Call to Action
Hawk Squad is a fun, high-energy volunteer program where we welcome students each morning with high fives, compliments, positivity, and enthusiasm as they head into class! Getting started is simple—just complete the standard MISD volunteer background check and fill out the form linked here. (Please note: by completing this form you are giving your personal information to a Malvern parent.)
In addition to morning greetings, we also help out at various school events throughout the year. Our goal is to grow Hawk Squad into a strong and lasting tradition—and we’d love for you to be a part of it!
Active members will have the opportunity to purchase an exclusive, custom Hawk Squad t-shirt to wear and keep.
We welcome everyone—dads, moms, grandparents, and more! If you're ready to have fun and make a difference, sign up and join the squad. We can’t wait to meet you!
