Hello Viewlands Families!

The fall weather is here. We have been enjoying many some cool crisp mornings with blue sky sunny days! The weather right now looks like more of those days, which is lovely. We also know the rain is coming! Rain is part of our Pacific NW weather! At Viewlands we go outside for recess rain or shine! We go outside at recesses unless there are unsafe conditions, such as thunder/lightening storms, hail, or torrential downpours with flooding areas on the playground. Outside recess time is important!

Please remember to label coats and any other belongings with your child's name. Labeling items with their name helps us reunite your child with items left at school and in the overflowing lost and found! We prefer when students bring rain coats for rainy days. Umbrellas are not the best tools for recess and the playground when lots of students are playing!

On Thursday we participated in the Great ShakeOut with our first earthquake drill of the year. Earthquake drills are one type of drill we do at school. We have a drill each month to practice. This month was the earthquake drill.

A few highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this week include: being a guest teacher with 1st graders in Ms. Veliz's class at the end of the week; celebrating some learning growth shown on the MAP assessment with a few 4th and 5th graders that really took their time to show their learning growth from the spring assessment; talking favorite book series and books with some 2nd and 3rd graders; and thinking through how to dissect math word problems with 1st and 2nd graders.

Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

In Partnership,

Carrie Wheeler | Viewlands Principal

Viewlands Annual K-5 Zoo Fieldtrip Viewlands Annual K-5 Zoo Fieldtrip

Friday, October 30th

It is an annual tradition to go to the Woodland Park Zoo on or near the last day of October. This has been a school tradition since Viewlands reopened in 2011 after being closed for 2 years. We do not do Halloween celebrations or costumes, instead we focus on a fun fall activity, by visiting the zoo. We love this tradition at Viewlands! A school day at the zoo is such a fun way to celebrate fall. We will do our all-school fieldtrip to the zoo on Friday, October 30th this year.

We will need volunteers for this fieldtrip. You must be an approved volunteer to chaperone a fieldtrip. Please see the volunteer approval process below if you are not yet an approved volunteer. Once approved, the approval status lasts for 2 years. If you are an approved volunteer and want to check when you need to renew, please log into the Volunteer Portal and check your renew date.

The costs for our students, staff, and some of the family chaperones is free because we are a Title 1 school. We also receive subsidies for our busses for the same reason. We cover the remainder of the costs with support from VEPTSA for the remaining chaperones costs and transportation costs (not all of the costs related to busses are covered through the subsidies that we receive based on our Title 1 status).

All students need a permission form for the zoo. Your child's teacher will connect with you if the permission form has not been returned.

A couple families have asked what to do If they prefer for their child not to attend the zoo fieldtrip and want to keep them home. If your family prefers this, please let the classroom teacher and office team know. The absence will be excused.

The zoo allows a ratio of 1 adult to 6 students (this includes parent chaperones and staff). We have purchased the maximum number of additional tickets so we can take more adults. This allows us to take more adults, but please understand there is still a limit. The teachers will be using a lottery system if they have more approved volunteers that want to go then there is space. Each classroom has a designated number of chaperone spots based on student numbers. We appreciate your willingness and excitement to chaperone this fieldtrip. If you do not go on this fieldtrip, hopefully you can support a different one later this year.

EVENTS:

VEPTSA Fall General Meeting - Monday October 19th 6:30-8pm in the library.

These meetings are for all members of the PTA and anyone in the school community who is interested in learning more about the PTA. Principal Wheeler attends these meetings, provides an update and answers your questions. Free childcare is provided by Creative Kids and generous snacks and beverages are provided as well!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:

● Want to volunteer at Viewlands? Please start the process with SPS to be a volunteer now. There are always opportunities to volunteer for classroom fieldtrips, classroom learning activities, school events, VEPTSA events, support in the library, support in art, and more! Your volunteer approval is good for two years but the process can take 4-6 weeks so please start this right away!

● The Family Ambassador program is still looking for parents/volunteers especially for fourth grade. Family Ambassadors spend 2-4 hours per month supporting classroom teachers. This is a great way to dip your toe into the PTA and get involved in the Viewlands community. If you are interested to learn more contact - face@viewlandsptsa.org.
