PROCEDURE FOR MISSED EXAMS AND REWRITES

Teachers schedule assessments with intention, and students are expected to write exams during the designated assessment time. However, we recognize that absences do occur for a variety of reasons. To support students in catching up on missed assessments—without losing additional instructional time—SCS offers an after-school exam-writing opportunity.

Students who miss an in-class assessment will be expected to write it after school as soon as possible (typically the next day). This process does not apply to students who access exam-writing accommodations.

After-School Exam-Writing Space

  • Location: Room 212

  • Time: 3:40 p.m. – 5:10 p.m., every school day (2:40 to 4:10 on Wednesdays)

  • Late or missed exams will not be written during lunch or class time unless arranged through administration.

This process is to protect instructional time and improve student learning. Research consistently shows that missing class negatively affects achievement. It can also limit a teacher’s ability to review or reference assessments during lessons when some students have not yet completed them. Offering a structured, after-school writing space ensures students can stay on track without compromising their learning or the learning of others.

Thank you for your support as we prioritize student success.

Parking Lot Safety Message from Cst. Cheri-Lee Smith

It’s every driver’s responsibility to take safety precautions. Whether you drive your child to school or have a teen driver, please consider the following parking lot safety tips for school parking lot safety. The bolded sections pertain specifically to our parking lot and were added by Mr. Winkel.

  • Arrive early to school – The earlier you arrive, the easier it will be to find a good parking spot and the less likely it will be to encounter situations that lead to collisions

  • Travel in the directions designated in the lanes of the parking lot — always turn right immediately upon entering our parking lot

  • Avoid driving through empty parking stalls — there are a lot of children making their way to the shuttle or the school

  • Limit distractions while driving and parking – Put your phone away

  • Park in designated parking stalls only — no one should use the staff parking area for drop-off; students who are parking should use the first three islands of parking stalls; drop-off should occur in the back, nearer to the crosswalk/church building

  • Obey all traffic control devices

  • Keep your eyes on the road – Look in all directions for pedestrians, bicycles and other vehicles.

  • Keep conversations to a minimum

  • Do not enter or attempt to enter the bus lane, unless directed by a parking lot supervisor (special cases (i.e., student on crutches) — arranged with parking lot supervisors)

Together we can ensure the safety of all students, staff, and their families!

Campus EIPS is coming to our school at lunch!

We’re excited to host Campus EIPS during lunch hour on January 8th— and we hope you’ll stop by the table in the foyer. Campus EIPS offers online and in-person collegiate pathways, giving high school students real-world skills and early access to post-secondary opportunities while still in high school.

Whether you’re curious about trades, health & human services, dual-credit classes, apprenticeships, or using myBlueprint to map out your future — the table will be set up and ready to answer your questions. Campus EIPS can help you explore career options, plan for post-secondary education, and learn about pathways that match your interests.

You can also check out more information on their website about both in-person and online opportunities — and get updates on the upcoming Heartland Skills Centre opening February 1, 2027, in Fort Saskatchewan.

If you have any questions, come down to chat with them Friday at lunch — they are here to help you explore what’s next!

Procedures and Guidelines

Emergency Preparedness

During an emergency, our first priority is the safety of students and staff. To provide an effective response to any school crisis, the Division has developed an Emergency Response Plan. Please review.

Personal Device Management & BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

Please take a moment to review our Personal Device Management with your student. This helps ensure that both parents and students are aware of expectations and responsibilities regarding technology use at school.

FROM EIPS FROM EIPS

Inclement Weather

With the winter season almost here, the school has a few reminders for families:

  • Ensure students have clothing appropriate for expected weather conditions.
  • If weather conditions are bad enough to impact student transportation, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) advises families directly, and posts updates on social media and eips.ca. · Decisions regarding bus cancellations are guided by an EIPS administrative procedure that states, “school bus service may be suspended…when there is a forecast or current temperature of -40 C, including wind chill factor, in one or more regions.” Other reasons for suspending or delaying school bus services include adverse weather and poor road conditions.
  • When school bus services are suspended, schools remain open to students.

For more information, contact EIPS Student Transportation at 780-417-8151.

2025-26 Students Assessment Updates

In managing the necessary shift in learning following the labour disruption, the following changes in student assessments and supports have been made for the 2025-26 school year:

  • For elementary and junior high schools, there will be only two report cards—to be issued January 28 and June 23.
  • Parent-Teacher-Student interviews will take place on December 1.
  • All common exams for grades 7, 8, 10 and 11 are cancelled for semester 1.
  • Kindergarten developmental screeners will be issued twice this year—in mid-December and again in June.
  • For students with an Instructional Support Plan, schools will be reaching out in late-November or early-December (rather than earlier in November) to finalize these plans for the year.

On October 31, Alberta Education and Childcare cancelled the January 2026 diploma examinations and Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs). Students may opt to write January diploma exams in April or June 2026, on a voluntary basis.
