PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear DHS Community,
I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well and that you were able to enjoy some of the beautiful weather this week. In this edition we have information about Spirit week beginning tomorrow, a fan bus to Melrose to support our Football team and cheerleaders on friday night, information about our town wide unified basketball game on October 6 with an order form for t shirts that needs to be completed this week, locker, powerschool, athletics and theater announcements and much more! We are so excited for this school year! To our families celebrating Rosh Hashanah, we hope your celebration will filled with light and love.
As we look forward to the beginning of fall, we want to celebrate a fantastic first week back at Danvers High School. Most importantly, our students demonstrated an outstanding academic focus right out of the gate, getting acclimated to their classes and establishing great routines. Additionally, our students were exceptional in adapting to our updated cell phone policy, showing remarkable focus and positivity throughout the building all week. Beyond the classroom, it was a thrill to see the initial success of our athletic teams and the marching band’s impressive first performance of the season. DHS, it was a great week and certainly we have all we need right here to flourish.
Completing this first week reminded me of a story and a proverb that feel especially meaningful right now. A couple of years ago, during the NFL Combine, college quarterback Malik Willis was captured on a quick video—unbeknownst to him—opening his suitcase on a city street to give his own brand-new clothing to a homeless stranger. When the clip went viral and he was asked about it, he simply shared that his family and coaches taught him he was blessed, adding: "What I really need is around me and within me."
That moment reminds us that we already have what matters most, even in a world that incessantly pushes for faster, bigger, and "more," and often responds with frustration when expectations aren't met. What Mr. Willis demonstrated is that emotionally and as a community, what we have in front of us is more than enough if we let go of the noise and focus on what truly matters.
That philosophy hits home here at DHS. We truly believe that everything a student needs to grow, connect, and succeed is right here within our walls. We offer a wealth of opportunities, but if a student ever feels there is a club, sport, or activity missing that speaks to their passion, we want to hear about it! Please reach out to an administrator or staff member—we will do everything we can to support your interests and help bring new ideas to life.
Our history reflects continued success, and our future positions us as a lighthouse district—provided we remain dedicated to excellence, support the emotional well-being of our students and staff, and maintain the rigor that prepares our students for a bright future.
An Irish proverb shared with me years ago centers on this exact belief and should you choose to read it I hope it resonates in some way.
This truth carries a simple lesson: to truly experience joy, we must also navigate challenges. If we only experience smooth sailing, we lose our appreciation for true happiness. The difficult moments help us cherish the good ones even more. That holds deeply true in education and extra-curriculars. There will be euphoric victories, but there will also be moments of struggle—a grade we didn't hope for, or playing time we didn't expect, amissed line, a person who break their hearts, or a program they were not accepted to. How we teach our students to accept and grow through those tough moments helps them realize that everything will be okay and their journey will take them to where they are supposed to go. Learning to navigate those hurdles, far more than a trophy for simply participating, creates the balance that helps us "have enough" long after high school.
Every day, I am blessed to see our Assistant Principals, Directors of Curriculum, Special Education and Athletics, Faculty, Staff, Team Chair, Instructional Assistants and Behavior Techs, Nurses, SRO, IT and Library Media Staff, Counselors, Coaches, Advisors, Food Service and DPW teams, Central Office, School Committee, Town Officials, First Responders, and community partners work tirelessly to ensure our students have everything they need. They help our students balance social-emotional well-being with the habits of mind necessary to become successful citizens. In their own way, they follow that same spirit of giving—offering their time, kindness, and support so our students can thrive. They deserve our deepest appreciation and gratitude.
May your week ahead be filled with enough of what we all need most—love, kindness, appreciation, and support
