Notes From the Admin Team
It’s hard to believe we’re already well into fall! October was a wonderfully busy month filled with exciting learning experiences, special events, and lots of school spirit. Our field trips have been a highlight—both in and out of school - as students and staff alike have enjoyed the chance to take learning beyond the classroom and make real-world connections in fun, meaningful ways.
As we turn the page to November, we’re filled with gratitude for our amazing students, supportive families, and dedicated staff. The holiday season is right around the corner, and we look forward to celebrating all the growth, learning, and joy that this time of year brings to our school community.

Chick-fil-A Biscuit Fundraiser
If a student getting off of the bus has exact change and wishes to purchase a biscuit they may do so.
Students in the car line that arrive by 7:25 may also have a biscuit purchased for them. Remember, instruction begins at 7:30 so students should be arriving prior to that time.
Field Trips
As field trip season approaches, please make sure you are familiar with our current field trip policies and procedures.
*Students should wear their blue shirts (provided by PTO) on field trips.
*Teachers will let parents know how many chaperones can attend the trip based on the number of seats on the bus, needs for the class, and limitations for the venue.
*All selected chaperones must complete the district volunteer application at least two weeks before the date of the trip. If your paperwork is not completed in time another chaperone will be selected in your place.
*No parents or other family members should plan to join the students on the trip if they are not an approved chaperone. Just like our learning environment here on school grounds, safety is our top priority. Adults that are not on the approved chaperone list will not be able to join the group.
*Approved chaperones must ride the bus to help supervise the students. Chaperones may not bring other children/siblings to the trip.
*All students must ride the bus to and from the field trip. They may not be brought to or picked up from the venue in personal vehicles.
*Please do not send Stanley cups or stainless water bottles as teachers/chaperones are not able to carry these throughout the day.
Field trips are an extension of our learning here at school. Students are expected to follow school rules while on the trip. We love providing opportunities for students to experience new things outside of our school building and are looking forward to the fun trips we have planned.
Tips from the Math Intervention Team
10 Ways to Help Your Elementary Student with Math at Home
Everyday moments offer simple ways to explore math together.
Show a positive attitude: Remind your child that everyone can learn math with practice.
Find math in everyday routines: Count forks, compare prices, or double a recipe together.
Ask, “How do you know?”: Invite your child to explain how they reached an answer.
Play math games: Use cards, dice, or board games to practice counting and comparing.
Practice facts in short bursts: Ask a few relaxed number questions, then stop before frustration.
Use objects and drawings: Try toys, blocks, or sketches to make problems easier to picture.
Estimate and measure: Guess an object’s length, then measure it together to check.
Notice patterns and shapes: Look for patterns at home and talk about what comes next.
Collect and show simple data: Tally family members’ favorite fruits and compare the votes.
Learn from mistakes and stay connected: Try another strategy together, and contact the teacher with questions.
Choose a few ideas that fit your family, and celebrate your child’s effort!
Tips from the Reading Intervention Team
Read Together, Grow Together
~ Fun, Easy Ways to Cheer on Your “Reading Gator” at Home ~
Abner Creek Families, did you know a few cheerful minutes with a book can help reading feel like a natural part of family life? Follow your child’s interests, take turns reading, and enjoy the stories you share!
PreK–K
Let your child hold the book and point out the front cover and title page.
Reread favorite books, then play “word spotter” with familiar words.
Why it matters: Handling books and noticing familiar words build early reading skills.
Grades 1–2
Reread a favorite book and take turns reading pages or lines.
For tricky words, look at the letters, picture, and sentence for clues.
Why it matters: Practice builds fluency and helps children figure out new words.
Grades 3–5
Make time for a mix of texts, read aloud or silently.
Explore unfamiliar words and their meaningful parts, such as beginnings and endings.
Why it matters: Reading different texts and building vocabulary strengthen comprehension and stamina.
A Simple Routine
Pick a cozy, regular time and spot with screens off. Let your child choose a book, take turns reading, and talk for a minute about a favorite part or what might happen next.
At Abner Creek Academy, we encourage families to make reading part of each day. Aim for 15–20 minutes of reading daily—and remember, sharing a book together counts!
