RE: Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Notice

Dear International Academy of Flint Parent(s)/Legal Guardian(s):

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. FERPA gives parents and students over the age of 18 (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to their children's education records.

Parents or eligible students have the right to inspect and review the student's education records maintained by the school. Schools are not required to provide copies of records unless, for reasons such as great distance, it is impossible for parents or eligible students to review the records. A fee for copies may be charged.

Parents or eligible students have the right to request that a school correct records which they believe to be inaccurate or misleading. If the school decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student then has the right to a formal hearing. After the hearing, if the school still decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student has the right to place a statement with the record setting forth his or her view about the contested information.

Generally, schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student in order to release any information from a student's education record. However, FERPA allows schools to disclose those records, without consent, to the following parties or under the following conditions (34 CFR § 99.31): School officials with legitimate educational interest; other schools to which a student is transferring; specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes; appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student; organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the school; accrediting organizations; to comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena; appropriate officials in cases of health and safety emergencies; and State and local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant to specific State law.

Under FERPA, schools may disclose, without consent, "directory" information such as a student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance.

If you would like to learn more about FERPA, the name and address of the office that administers FERPA is: Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue SW, Washington D.C. 20202.

Welcome Back Middle Schoolers! Welcome Back Middle Schoolers!

Good Afternoon Middle School Parents,

Welcome to the 24/25 school year. Middle School is off to a strong start this year! Our children are making new friends and building relationships with their teachers. They are getting better at using the locks on their lockers, finding their way to their classrooms and arriving on time.

Please continue to support our students' efforts to do well in school. Make sure they get plenty of rest, have the materials they need for class and arrive in the morning on-time, ready to start the day.

If you have any concerns, please reach out to their teachers through email. It is the most efficient way to communicate with them. Once you reach out to a teacher, please give them 24 hours to respond.

We are looking forward to partnering with you this year to create an environment where our children are growing academically, emotionally and socially!

Respectfully,

Dr. Tamara D. Smeltzer

Dean of Academics - Middle School

2024-25 Updated Uniform Policy 2024-25 Updated Uniform Policy

6th-12th Cellphone Policy 6th-12th Cellphone Policy

zoom_out_map

Dear Parents,

As stated in the Student Handbook, cell phones and other electronic devices are prohibited during the school day. To further remove the distraction of electronic devices IAF is moving to Yondr Pouches. (See Frequently Asked Questions on the reverse side) By signing this agreement, the student and parent/guardian acknowledge and agree to abide by the policy.

Daily Process

  • The first day students arrive at school, they will be given a Pouch.

  • Upon entering the building students will power off their devices.

  • Students will place the device inside their assigned Pouch and close it.

  • Students will store their Pouch in a locked locker or keep it on their person.

Failure to bring Yondr Pouch to school -Any student in grades 6-12 who arrives at school with an electronic device but NO Yondr Pouch will abide by the following:

  • Students' device will be turned over to the Director of Student Services and Operations or her designee. No exceptions.

  • The device will be returned to the student at the end of the day.

Lost/Damage/Destruction of the Pouch- The pouches are the property of IAF. Every student in grades 6-12 will be assigned a personal Yondr Pouch. Students are responsible for bringing their pouch to school everyday and keeping it in good condition.

  • $10 replacement fee

  • Loss of privilege to bring electronic devices.

  • Suspension up to 10 days.

The Yondr Program utilizes a simple, secure pouch that stores a phone. Every student in grades 6th-12th grade will secure their phone in a personally assigned Yondr pouch when they arrive at school. Students will maintain possession of their phones and will not use them until their pouches are opened at the end of the school day. Students are required to bring their Yondr pouch to and from school each day and are responsible for their pouch at all times. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school directly at (810)600-5000. We did offer meetings for parents/guardians at our most recent Meet Your Teacher Day.

If there is an emergency and you would like to get in contact with your child, please reach out to the Main Office at (810) 600-5000.

In an effort to best serve your child, we appreciate your full support in adoption of the Yondr Program at our school.

Thank you,

Kendra Giles

Please Note: Success Begans with Showing Up!

  • Breakfast is Served at 7:35 am
  • School Day Begins at 8:00 am
  • New: School Day Ends at 3:15 pm
  • Early Release Dismissal at 12:30 pm
  • Late Start begins at 10:00 am & Breakfast starts at 9:30 am
  • New: No Early Dismissal after 2:45pm

If you are coming into the office to request early dismissal, students will not be released after 2:45pm. It is too challenging and too disruptive to request the number of students being asked for early dismissal. We understand that transportation reductions are challenging, and we have been consistently working with MTA on this. However, it is a county wide problem unfortunately. Thank you for understanding and your patience in advance.

Change of Address or Phone Numbers?

Parents/Guardians- do you have a phone number/address that needs to be updated with us? We have a form in the office that you can fill out for a quick change. Or you can email either Ms. McKinley in our records department at smckinley@iafphoenix.org. It is extremely important to have the most current contact information for our families on file at all times. Please, be sure to let us know if this changes.

zoom_out_map

Are you taking advantage of our text messaging service?

Parents/Guardians- Our school utilizes the SchoolMessenger system to deliver auto dialers to our families in case of a school closure, reminders of events, or simply a dress down day, etc.

We would like to start to utilize the texting option as well on SchoolMessenger but we do not currently have that many families signed up for the text alerts.

You can participate in the free service by just sending a text message of "Y" or "YES" to our school's short code number 67587.

You can also opt out of these messages at any time by simply replying to one of our messages with the word "STOP". SchoolMessenger is compliant with the Student Privacy Pledge, so you can rest assured that your information is safe and will never be given or sold to anyone.

Rules for Vehicles While on School Grounds:

Because the safety of our children is of paramount concern to us, we require all parents to adhere to the following rules of the road while on campus:

  1. There is a 5 miles per hour speed limit at all times while on school property.
  2. Park in designated parking spaces only.
  3. While on school grounds, pedestrians always have the right of way.
  4. Vehicle ignitions MUST be turned off, and the keys removed, while parked on school grounds.
  5. Children may NOT be left unattended in a vehicle at any time or for any reason.
  6. Violations of these rules may result in a warning. If a violation is serious, or if violations continue, school personnel are authorized to take a tag number for a report to the local police.
  7. Do not park in areas around the school that have signs that specifically say NO PARKING. This is an order from the city.
