Parents and Guardians,

We would like to inform you that Tuesday, March 24, 2026, will be a state testing day. All students except seniors will participate in required state and school-based assessments.

The assessments administered at each grade level are as follows:

  • Juniors will take the ACT.

  • Sophomores will take the PreACT.

  • Freshmen will complete a Pear Assessment designed to help prepare them for the ACT in future years.

  • Seniors will not have school on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

Students are expected to attend for the full school day, which begins at 8:05 a.m. Juniors will be dismissed at 2:40 p.m. during Scooper Time. All students in attendance will be provided a FREE breakfast that morning.

As these assessments are state-required, attendance is essential, and any student who is absent will need to complete a make-up session. All assessments are administered online; therefore, students must bring their fully charged school-issued computer.

Thank you for your support in helping our students be prepared and successful. Have a great day.

SBHS SPEECH & DEBATE STATE RUNNER-UP SBHS SPEECH & DEBATE STATE RUNNER-UP

Sturgis Brown High School delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 South Dakota State Debate & Individual Events Tournament in Aberdeen, earning four individual state championships and finishing as the State A Runner-Up overall. Competing against the top programs from across the state, the Scoopers showcased depth, determination, and excellence across multiple categories, bringing home an impressive collection of medals and accolades.

Leading the charge in Lincoln-Douglas (LD) Debate, Riley Carlson captured the State Championship title, adding to his growing legacy after also winning the International Extemporaneous Speaking state title. Carlson’s repeat championship in International Extemp marks his second consecutive year as state champion in the event. Teammate Hunter Scott also had a strong showing in LD Debate, advancing to the quarterfinals and finishing third overall.

In Informative Speaking, Clara Kruger earned a sixth-place finish, demonstrating poise and preparation among a competitive field of finalists.

The Oratory category proved to be another highlight for Sturgis Brown. Madisyn Richter claimed the State Championship title with a compelling performance, while Kate Bestgen secured a fifth-place finish, adding valuable points to the team’s overall total.

Sturgis Brown also dominated Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. Hunter Scott rose to the top of the podium as State Champion, adding to his strong tournament performance, while Ian Johnson earned sixth place in the same event.

In International Extemporaneous Speaking, Cade Tallmage finished as State Runner-Up with a second-place medal. Carlson once again stood at the top, earning his second consecutive state title in International Extemp to cap off a remarkable weekend.

With four individual state champions — Riley Carlson (LD Debate and International Extemp), Madisyn Richter (Oratory), and Hunter Scott (Domestic Extemp) — along with multiple additional finalists and medalists, Sturgis Brown’s depth across events propelled the team to an overall State A Runner-Up finish.

The Scoopers’ performance in Aberdeen reflects months of preparation, dedication, and teamwork. Congratulations on bringing home four state titles and a team runner-up trophy!!

SBHS Earns First-Ever Legacy Award at 2026 SD State ProStart Invitational SBHS Earns First-Ever Legacy Award at 2026 SD State ProStart Invitational

The 2026 South Dakota State ProStart Invitational was held March 9–10 in Pierre, bringing together some of the state’s most talented high school culinary students for two days of intense competition, creativity, and professionalism. Sturgis Brown High School proudly sent two teams to compete in the annual ProStart Culinary Competition: a Cake Team and a Culinary Team. Both groups demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork, and dedication throughout the event.

The Cake Team, comprised of Destiny Ownbey and Destiny Plunkett, impressed judges with their beautifully executed cake. Their attention to detail and artistic presentation reflected months of preparation and practice.

Competing in the Culinary division were Kurtis Capp, Xandria Goodall, and Ashlyn Larson. The trio prepared and presented a series of thoughtfully crafted dishes under the pressure of strict time limits and judging standards. Although Sturgis Brown did not take home top honors in the Cake or Culinary categories, both teams showcased remarkable talent and determination.

While the teams narrowly missed category titles, the Sturgis Culinary Team achieved a historic honor. They were awarded the first-ever Clark Kelley Legacy Award, presented in recognition of outstanding safety and sanitation practices in their workspace. The award was presented by Chef Clark Kelley’s wife, Kris, and his daughter. The Clark Kelley Legacy Award honors a lifetime of dedication to ProStart and the culinary arts. Chef Kelley was known as a Master of Safety and Sanitation who recognized the brilliance in every student and emphasized the importance of every detail in the kitchen.

The recognition highlights not only the team’s culinary skill but also their commitment to professionalism and industry standards—qualities that are essential in any successful kitchen.

Congratulations to the Sturgis Brown Culinary Team: Kurtis Capp, Xandria Goodall, and Ashlyn Larson, on earning this distinguished honor and representing their school with excellence at the 2026 South Dakota State ProStart Invitational.

The Sturgis Brown High School Art Club is inviting the community to an evening of art, food, and fundraising at its upcoming Live Auction on April 9 at the Sturgis Vets Club.

In addition to the auction, attendees can enjoy an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner starting at 5 p.m. The meal is priced at $12 per person, offering community members an opportunity to support local students while enjoying a hearty dinner before the bidding begins.

The event will be held at the Sturgis Vets Club, located at 868 Main Street in Sturgis. The fundraiser is organized under the guidance of Art Club advisor Mrs. Kim Somervold. Organizers hope the combination of student artwork, community support, and a shared meal will make the evening both successful and memorable.
