Setting Ourselves Up for a Successful Day!
It is our Morning Meeting, and it lasts about twenty minutes each day right after morning recess.
After gathering in a circle, we begin by greeting each other by name in a friendly and cheerful way. Next, the students have a chance to share any new and exciting events with the class. This allows them to work on their speaking and listening skills. After sharing, there is an activity for the whole class. We might sing a song, read a poem, play a math game, or do some other activity. This allows the students to work together and problem solve as a whole group while having fun! The last part of our meeting is called Morning Message. During this time, students connect to the previous day’s learning, and think about the day ahead. They read the chart together or individually which allows them to practice reading/speaking skills. We also “work” the chart, which means that we use the chart for learning. We may practice reading, language, or math skills.
The Morning Meeting is a great way to build community, increase excitement about learning, and improve academic and social skills.
A Word From Mrs. Pope
Welcome Back to Everyone. I hope you had a relaxing summer and enjoyed some stargazing with your kids!
I have heard from several kids that they enjoyed their constellation books and activities that went home in June.
I am still posting summer work Bingo Boards and Activities and offering a visit to the Treasure Chest for the kids that get their forms back to me! Thanks so much for all of your help.
We all hope to see you on Wednesday, September 23 at 5:00 oclock for our Free Soup and Salad Dinner - with a short Title l presentation. We are a schoolwide Title I school, so all families are welcome to submit their suggestions and ideas. This dinner and short presentation will be followed up by our Open House starting at 5:45. Also, the Free Family Book Giveaway will be set up. Please visit the Book Giveaway and take home some awesome gently used/ or new books for the family.
See You Soon!

Exploring Our World
We’ve been busy learning and exploring this week! We’ve been building, creating, and using our math tools, including GeoBlocks, to explore shapes, patterns, and spatial reasoning. We also had fun learning a new nursery rhyme, “Jack Be Nimble,” and even created our very own candlestick to practice jumping over! We’ve also been working hard on our left and right discrimination and directionality, using movement and hands-on activities to help our brains know which way to go.
Powerful Learning with Mrs. Powell
In first grade we have been working really hard practicing daily routines and learning how it helps our days run more smoothly. In math we have been reviewing adding within ten and how to add a few more and a few less. We counted some more collections in new ways and worked with partners to share ideas. In ELA we have been reading fables and really enjoyed The Goose and The Golden Egg and The Dog in the Manger. We have learned what makes a story a fable and how to interpret the moral of that story. Ask your child which fable has been their favorite so far!

Sparking Second Graders
The sparkling second graders jumped right back in with learning and growing this week. We brainstormed how to be a positive, productive member of our classroom community and created our "classroom guidelines." Then, each child illustrated our thoughts of what the guidelines mean. We finished our fairy tale unit with a class project of the characteristics of fairy tales. For math, we are starting our unit on data collection and organization. Ask your 2nd grader about the tall tale of Paul Bunyan.

Special Visitor at Second Recess!!
On Thursday during recess, a 4th grade student excitedly reported an animal sighting on the playground near the bike rack. Mrs. Germain responded along with several students and were delighted to see that our visitor was a short-tailed weasel!
What was this vivacious little mammal doing? Well, we weren't sure at first. We observed the short-tailed weasel go under, over, in and out of the plastic borders left by the fence. The children were so excited to watch his antics from a distance as Mrs. Germain reminded students they should never get too close or touch a wild animal no matter how small (or cute) they are.
We finally figured out the short-tailed weasel's mission - it was hunting for its lunch! The evidence emerged when a lone mouse was spotted hopping away from the scene and disappearing under the fence. The mystery was solved but unfortunately our short-tailed weasel visitor did not get lunch. What a treat to observe this creature!
In other news...3rd and 4th graders were excited to begin cursive writing with ink pens! For some students it was practice, and for others it was their first time writing in cursive. Mrs. Germain encouraged proper penmanship posture as students practiced the clock-climbing
letters a, c, d, g, o, q. One enthusiastic student exclaimed, "This is fun! Can we do this everyday?"
