June 2026 Newsletter
A Message from the Principals
As we look ahead to June, there are several exciting year end events planned for the month. We encourage our students to continue to engage with their learning and be inspired by all the activities right until the end of June!
We will be having our annual school family picnic on June 26 this year. In the morning our students will participate in Summer Fun Day activities with their teachers. Parents are invited to join their children for a picnic lunch starting at 11:45. Parents will pick their children up from their classrooms. Be sure to bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on. In the event of rain we will picnic inside the school. This year we will be offering Santa Lucia pizza for families to eat at the picnic. You will be able to order through Munch a Lunch - please check your email for instructions for this.
The PAC has been busy organizing a basket raffle (see information below). We encourage all children to stay after the picnic and spend the afternoon with their teachers and friends. If you will be taking them home after the picnic you must sign them out at the office.
Report cards will be available on June 30 on the parent portal at noon. Thank you to all of you for continuing to support our school and staff. We really appreciate the learning partnership we have with each of you.

Safety Blitz
Over the past few days, you may have noticed an increased presence of Community Safety Officers (CSOs) around Woodlawn School during drop-off and pick-up times. We are grateful for our partnership with the City of Steinbach and appreciate their support in helping keep our school community safe.
Recently, we sent home an email with important safety reminders. As part of this effort, CSOs have been patrolling the area to help reinforce traffic rules and provide reminders when needed. While their primary goal is to promote safety, tickets may also be issued when necessary.
In addition, we are working with the City of Steinbach to update street signage around the school so that No Parking and No Stopping zones are clearly marked. These updates are intended to improve traffic flow and increase safety for everyone in the area.
Finally, we have one important request for all drivers: please slow down. We continue to see situations where vehicles are stopping or parking in restricted areas, or students are being dropped off and picked up in unsafe ways when people are in a hurry. By slowing down, parking properly, using designated crosswalks, and following traffic signage, we can all help ensure students and families arrive safely to and from school each day.
Class Placements
We are currently working on finalizing our class lists for the fall. This is a very involved process and includes balancing many, many different factors, including:
Balanced class composition
Social and behavioural considerations
Group dynamics
Learning styles
Parent input
Every year we get many parent requests - whether it be for a specific teacher or for certain friends to be in a class with their child. While we appreciate you advocating for your child, please also remember that we are placing over 400 students into classes for next year. This means that we cannot grant every request that we receive. We do our best to ensure that every student has a positive learning partner in their class - unfortunately we cannot always give everyone their first choice. Please note that the deadline for requests has passed and we will not consider any late requests at this point.
Given appropriate support at home and at school, it has been our experience that the vast majority of students experience success with the teacher they are placed with. Where a placement is proving to be difficult, we ask that parents and students give it the time required for friendships and classroom community building to develop.
Class placements will be included in your child's June report card. Early information about whether requests have or have not been granted will not be shared prior to this date, with the exception of students entering Kindergarten. Families of incoming Kindergarten students will be notified of their child's teacher and the days they will attend in mid-June.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to your child's education.

The Summer Slide
Water slides and playground slides are wonderful summer activities. A slide to avoid is the summer reading slide.
Developing good habits such as reading regularly before bed or journaling about daily activities can help children to maintain all the gains they’ve made in reading and writing throughout the school year. As with any developing skill, consistent practice is key. Even a little time on a regular basis can make a big difference in preventing students’ literacy skills from sliding backwards.
Have a wonderful summer!
News from PAC
Hello Woodlawn Families,
Your Friendly Neighborhood PAC here. We made it to June, just a few more weeks of school and then it's summer. Although it sure feels like the weather has decided it's summer already, hopefully you're all staying hydrated.
Coming up this June with PAC is our final meeting on June 2nd at 11:50am in the library.
And then we are looking forward to our Annual Basket Raffle!
What is the Annual Basket Raffle you ask, well let me tell you. Each class will be assigned a theme and families are welcome to donate items related to that theme. With those items, PAC builds gift baskets that you can try to win at the end of year picnic on June 26th. Watch for more details via email and a note home coming to a backpack near you :)
As always if you have any questions or concerns please contact us at woodlawnelementarypac@gmail.com
Enjoy your June,

Grow A Row
For nearly 20 years, Woodlawn students and their families have been involved in harvesting root vegetables for Southeast Helping Hands. We started with a Woodlawn Community Garden, and have since transitioned to inviting our families to donate from their own gardens, or to purchase and donate vegetables in the autumn. These vegetables have benefited families in need from our local community.
We are inviting Woodlawn students and their families to participate in our annual: Grow a Row for Those in Need gardening campaign. We are looking for root vegetables like: potatoes, carrots, onions, turnips, beets, pumpkins and squash.
Participating families are asked to bring their produce to Southeast Helping Hands in the autumn, located at 525 Main Street in Steinbach.
If you don’t plan on having a garden, but would still like to donate some root vegetables, your contribution is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your willingness to participate! We are excited to continue Woodlawn’s legacy of giving back to our local community and teaching children how to be generous, thoughtful, and caring citizens.
