Healthy Kids Colorado Survey
Dear families,
About the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey (HKCS)
Poudre School District will administer the voluntary Healthy Kids Colorado Survey (HKCS) to all middle and high school students between Jan. 12 and Jan. 23, 2026. Please contact your student's school to confirm their specific survey date.
The HKCS is an anonymous survey from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment that gathers important data about student well-being. Topics include:
- Mental health, suicide, and bullying
- Diet, exercise, and physical health
- Alcohol, tobacco, and drug use
- School safety and trusted adult relationships
Students will complete the survey during one class period. Participation is voluntary, and students may skip any question they do not feel comfortable answering. Responses are anonymous and cannot be tied to individual students or devices. PSD only receives aggregated data.
Why the Survey Matters
The survey results help schools, community groups, and state health agencies plan programs and services for youth. The anonymous data collected directly inform Poudre School District’s decisions that support student health and well-being.
How to Opt Out
If you do not want your student to participate, you must opt out via ParentVUE between Dec. 8 and Dec. 19, 2025. Students who are opted out will complete other schoolwork during the survey time.
Opt-Out Steps:
- Log into ParentVUE using your parent credentials (click here to learn how to activate your ParentVUE account if you haven’t already)
- Select your student’s name and click PSD Forms and Applications.
- Click the “Forms” link and then select “Healthy Kids Colorado Survey Opt Out”
- Read the information, type your name to opt out, and click the “Out Out” button.
A step-by-step guide titled How to Opt Out of the Health Kids Colorado Survey is available on the Community Tech Portal

2026-27 School Calendar Update
Dear PSD Community,
At the Dec. 9, 2025 Board of Education meeting, the board approved the school calendar for the 2026-27 academic year. We want to ensure families and staff are aware of the changes, particularly the later start to the school year, so you can plan ahead.
2026-27 School Calendar Important Dates
The calendar reflects feedback from employees, families, and past community surveys, as well as state requirements and PSD’s employee agreement. Key updates include:
- A later first day of school for all students: Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026
- The 2026-27 school calendar pushes the start of school later by one week. Beginning later helps reduce potential heat-related impacts at a time when temperatures in early August can be highest. Staff will begin the year with several non-student days clustered in mid-August for planning, professional learning, and building preparation.
- A transition day is scheduled for 6th and 9th graders on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026.
- Fall break and winter break
- The calendar preserves a five-day fall break in November and a two-week winter break in December—both consistently identified as community priorities.
- Non-student contact days spaced strategically
- Workdays, professional learning days, and exchange days are grouped to ease childcare challenges, support staff professional learning, and balance instructional time across semesters. Elementary-specific days are included for conferences and end-of-year preparation, while secondary schools maintain consistent semester transitions.
- Semester timing designed to meet state requirements
- The first semester will run Aug. 19 through Dec. 18 to ensure the semester ends before winter break.
A full overview of the non-student contact days, including building/work (B/W) days, workdays, conference days, and professional learning days, is available in the attached materials.
What comes next
The calendar will be published on the PSD website in January. School- and department-specific calendars will follow in the spring.
Thank you for your partnership as we plan ahead for the 2026-27 school year.

Outdoor Living Classes: Rethink Your Rubbish Conservation Challenge
Dear Lesher Families,
Mr. Mayer’s Outdoor Living class is participating in the Rethink Your Rubbish Conservation Challenge in partnership with the Denver Zoo. Students kicked off their project with a visit to the Denver Zoo to learn how our waste behaviors can impact wildlife around the world, both positively and negatively. Students then identified an area of need and are working on projects to change our waste behaviors in our Lesher community. Two groups are seeking donations of “lightly-used” clothing and water bottles for their projects. See below for more information from our Lesher students:
Water Bottle Donation Project
There are lots of reusable water bottles that end up in the lost and found at Lesher (or unused at home) that cannot be donated so they are thrown away which endangers the environment. Our students here at Lesher have started a campaign to reuse the old water bottles by washing and donating them to people in need. We would love to have you donate old reusable water bottles that you don't need. There will be bins by the front office and Mr. Mayer's room (12).
Viking Community Closet Thrift Store
Do you want to be a part of helping wildlife and reducing waste here at Lesher? You can help out by donating used clothing and visiting our new thrift shop! The Viking Community Closet hopes to have shoes, clothing, and other lightly-used donated items for FREE! However, this can only happen if you donate your used clothing (please wash it before donating). Donations start after Thanksgiving Break, and the store itself hopes to open on December 8th. After December 8th, the store will only be open on BLUE days from 2:45 to 3:30. For more information, please contact Mr. Mayer at bmayer@psdschools.org or check out the posters around the school. Thank you, Vikings!

PSD Engagement Norms
In an effort to foster a culture of mutual respect, effective communication, and quality customer service, PSD has created a set of norms for staff, family/guardian, and community engagement. These norms aim to set a positive tone for interactions between staff and parents and community members, whether they happen in person, over the phone, or in writing.
The norms will be posted in all PSD schools and include expectations that:
- Calls or emails that are not emergencies will be acknowledged within three school days.
- Appointments between the parties involved will be established as a norm for addressing concerns or discussing important matters through direct communication.
- Appointments will take place as soon as reasonably possible. Adequate time is needed for preparation and research before an appointment.
- Communication will focus on collaboration and understanding – respectful language and non-confrontational behavior from all parties are expected.
- Boundaries between personal and professional life will be maintained, and sensitive matters will not be addressed in community settings.
It’s important for everyone in our schools and in our communities to feel welcome and engage in mutual respect to best serve students.
