Parent Survey for School Improvement - Your Feedback is Requested and Appreciated

Thank you to those of you who have already completed our parent survey for feedback on and improvement for BHS. It is greatly appreciated and we have already begun looking at the information you have provided. If you have not filled it out yet, please see the information below as we would really appreciate your feedback so that we can maximize our potential impact on all of our students and their educational experience:

Our school is currently participating in the Cognia Accreditation Process, which helps us reflect on our practices and continue improving the education we provide to our students. As part of this process, we are asking parents and guardians to complete the following survey: Brighton High School Parent Survey 2025-26.

This survey gives you the opportunity to share your honest feedback about our school’s strengths and areas for growth, especially in the areas of communication, learning experiences, and student support. Your responses can be anonymous and will be combined with feedback from students and staff to help guide school improvement planning as part of the continuous improvement process and ensure we are meeting the needs of our students and families.

We greatly value your input, and your participation plays an important role in shaping the future of our school. Thank you for partnering with us, taking the time to share your voice, and for your continued support as we work to help all of our students grow and achieve their personal best!

If your student is a current 10th or 11th grader and is potentially interested in participating in the DEEP Program (a dual enrollment program through U of M - Flint), there will be an informational meeting for parents and/or students to learn more information about available programs, expenses, and courses that can be taken. There will also be an opportunity to have any questions you have answered. More information on the DEEP Program and what it offers can be found here.

Tuesday night's meeting will be at 6 pm in the BHS Media Center.

Operation Christmas Wishes Support

Operation Christmas Wishes had another extremely successful year this year, exceeding their goal in providing support for students in a neighboring community! Thank you so much for all your support! We couldn’t have done it without you! Here’s this year’s Operation Christmas Wishes video.

For more information about Operation Christmas Wishes, see the information below from this year's Leadership Class:

Join us in bringing a smile to every student's face this holiday season. By contributing to Operation Christmas Wishes, you're supporting Brighton High School and the Yoga Strong Foundation in providing Christmas gifts and other items to 530 students from Perry and Puentes Early Learning Centers in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Your generosity empowers our students, turning wishes into reality through the following:

  • Provide a Holiday Wish Gift to each child
  • Provide a new hat and water resistant gloves to each child
  • Support joyful surprises - coloring books, crayons, and even a visit from the Jolly Old Elf himself
  • Spread Holiday Cheer

Snow Day Information and School Closings

Earlier this month, Dr. Outlaw shared information in his monthly newsletter about some of the potential variables that are considered when determining if school will be closed or not. His message also included information about how that information can be communicated and what it means when school is cancelled. This is important information to be aware of in order to maximize everyone's safety and the information can be found here.

Student Scheduling Information - Starting January 5th

As a reminder, counselors will begin their one on one scheduling meetings with current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders starting on Monday, January 5th. They will be pulling students to meet with them from their English classes and will send them back as soon as they are able to minimize missed class time. The goal is that all students in grades 9 through 11 will be met with by the end of February, with the beginning of March being used to connect with students who were absent during their designated time. Changes can still be made after that point in time, but we want to have an idea of the classes our students are interested in as early as possible so that we can plan accordingly.

Application Course Information

As a reminder, there are certain courses that students have to apply for as opposed to just being able to sign up for them. Students were able to still put them down on their courses selection sheets, but need to fill out the application and be selected in order to be able to formally enroll in the class. These application are available in the Counseling Office and include the following classes:

  • Work Based Learning (Co-Op)
  • Media Publications (Yearbook and Newspaper)
  • Advanced Marketing (School Store)
  • Video Production
  • LINK
  • Education Careers
  • Peer to Peer
  • Out of District CTE Classes
  • Dual Enrollment Classes
  • DEEP Program
  • Leadership (Application NOT in Counseling)

Students should check these applications for deadlines as missed deadlines may be grounds for not getting into these classes if space is limited.

Leadership Class Application Update

We know that students are anxiously awaiting the release of the application for next year's Leadership Class. Students will apply with Mrs. Armstrong directly and will be able to do so later this month. Once applications are available, all eligible students (currently 10th and 11th graders) will be provided with the necessary information on how to apply.

Out of District CTE Classes

If your student is interested in taking a CTE course offered at another school next year, they should have put the information on their course selection sheet, but also need to fill out an additional application. The application can be found here. Upon completion, the application can be turned in to the Counseling Office.

The locations for each program can be found on the application. As a reminder, these programs are self-transport, so students will need to be able to find their own way to and from these programs in order to be able to enroll in these courses.

New Out of District CTE Offerings

LESA is offering two new CTE programs to our students that have been recently approved. One is offered in Howell and the other in Pinckney. Interested students should complete the following Google Form. They will only be able to access the form when signed in to their school Google account. Information on these courses is provided below:

  • Law Enforcement - Offered in the morning at the Livingston County Sheriff's Office. Course description is linked.
  • Auto Body Collision and Restoration - Offered in the afternoon at Pinckney High School. Course description is linked. Fridays will be remote for I-CAR certification work.

Upcoming 9th Grade Class Assembly - Holocaust Survivor Dr. Irene Butter

For planning purposes, we wanted you to have the following information well ahead of time. On Monday, January 12th, we are fortunate enough to be hosting Holocaust survivor Dr. Irene Butter at BHS. She will be sharing her story with all of our 9th grade students during an assembly in the BCPA. The assembly will be taking place during 5th hour. As a result, Freshmen will not be in their 5th hour class on this day. Depending on the length of the Q + A, it may push into 6th Hour as well. Teachers are aware of this so that they can plan accordingly.

Upcoming Weeks with No Advisory - Two in January

I know you have have all received the Advisory Calendar, but as a reminder, the will be NO Advisory on shortened weeks. There are two weeks in January that are shortened weeks, so there will be NO Advisory. Dates are provided below:

  • Wednesday, January 21st
  • Wednesday, January 28th

We are sharing this information now so that students can plan accordingly if they need additional support from their teachers or were planning to use this Advisory time for make up testing.

Make Up Testing and Attendance Opportunities

We will be resending this information as the dates get closer. However, as we do with most of the student days off that we have, we will be offering students the opportunity to make up assessments as well as attendance on the two Mondays we have off in January (January 19th and 26th). This can be a great help to our students to catch up as the semester ends and with limited Advisory periods in January. Per usual, we will ask students to communicate with their teachers in advance of these dates to make sure any assessments are dropped off by teachers in advance to be taken on these days.

Michigan's Public Universities: Guide to Admissions

Each year, we receive a guide to admissions for the public universities in the state of Michigan. It is loaded with information on each school, like Freshmen class enrollment numbers, academic profiles, financial aid and scholarship information, as well as application information. It is a great resource if you are looking to find out more about these schools. A link to the guide can be found here.

Distribution of PSAT/SAT Practice Results

As you know, strengthening PSAT/SAT readiness is a schoolwide goal this year. On November 19th, all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders who were present participated in a practice assessment during Advisory—PSAT practice for 9th and 10th graders and SAT practice for 11th graders. These formative assessments were not graded and are intended solely to help students understand their strengths and areas for growth.

Because Wednesday’s snow day interrupted our original plan to distribute hard copies of results, we will now provide those printed score reports during Advisory on January 7th. However, we do not want to delay students’ access to results for another month. Therefore, students can view their results electronically beginning today by following the directions below.

How to Access Your Results Digitally

Students may use the steps below to view their practice test results online:

  1. Go to the Clever Portal, and log in using your student username and password.
  2. In Clever, click on "Renaissance DNA" (found under either the JK–4 or Grades 5–12 heading).
  3. When prompted, click “Continue to Portal.”
  4. On the left-hand side, select “Assessments.”
  5. Under the “Recent Assessments” section on the right, click “SAT 11 Practice 2025.”
  6. You will first see a summary grade for your results.
  7. To review item-by-item performance, scroll down and click “Score by Question.”

Reviewing Results at Home

To support meaningful review and reflection, the following links are provided for both students and parents:

  • The practice test students completed
  • The answer key with explanations for each question

These resources make it easy to revisit questions, examine mistakes, and understand why the correct answer is correct.

You will notice that this was not a full-length PSAT or SAT. Rather, it was a shortened diagnostic designed to assess a range of skills measured across the PSAT/SAT suite of assessments.

Most Missed Questions

Below is a list of the six most frequently missed questions from the SAT test, from most missed to least missed, along with their test section, domain, assessed skill, and difficulty level:

  1. Question #12 – Math
    • Domain: Algebra
    • Skill: Systems of two linear equations in two variables
    • Difficulty: Hard
  2. Question #2 – Reading/Writing
    • Domain: Information and Ideas
    • Skill: Inferences
    • Difficulty: Hard
  3. Question #14 – Math
    • Domain: Algebra
    • Skill: Linear functions
    • Difficulty: Medium
  4. Question #19 – Math
    • Domain: Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
    • Skill: Two-variable data: Models and Scatterplots
    • Difficulty: Medium
  5. Question #7 – Reading/Writing
    • Domain: Standard English Conventions
    • Skill: Form, Structure and Sense
    • Difficulty: Medium
  6. Question #15 – Math
    • Domain: Advanced Math
    • Skill: Equivalent expressions
    • Difficulty: Medium

We encourage students to review these questions carefully, as they represent common areas of challenge across grade levels.

Looking Ahead

Teachers will continue to support students throughout the year by building skills aligned with the PSAT and SAT. In connection with this schoolwide focus, students will take another formative assessment—similar in structure to this one—during Advisory in February.

Thank you for your attention and support as we work together to help every student grow.

Tutoring Options at BHS

National Honor Society's After School Tutoring is underway! If your student is in need of extra help, we encourage them to reach out to the teacher first, as they will be the best resource, but have shared this option with them as well, so please feel free to do the same. NHS students will be available to tutor students in room B-1 from 2:30-3:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tutoring is free of charge. For more information about after school tutoring or for a list of NHS students who are willing to tutor, go to https://bit.ly/BrightonNHSTutoring Please note: our after school tutor will leave at 2:45 if no students have arrived by then.

In addition to After School Tutoring, we have another tutoring resource available for our students. Every year, the BHS Counseling Office generates a list of adult tutors that can be shared with students and families as an additional option if After School Tutoring doesn't work for them for any reason. These tutors have reached out and asked to be on our tutoring list as a resource to BHS students and families. They have self-reported their qualifications. All adults who are not BAS teachers have passed a background check. It is the responsibility of the students and families to find the best tutor for them, arrange meetings, and make payment.

The 2025-26 Tutor List can be found here.

Career Chats (Previously Lunch N Learns)

With moving Advisory out of lunches, we changed the name, but the idea for Lunch N Learns is back, just with a new name! We will be hosting Career Chats this year during Advisory and could use your help. Brighton High School is looking for community partners!

We are seeking volunteer presenters to share their careers and experiences with students during our 2025-26 Career Pathways Presentations. Our "Career Chats", previously known as Lunch N Learns, are a great opportunity to inspire the next generation and help students explore future career options.

When: During Advisory on Wednesdays from 9:18-10:16 am (dates vary)
Where: Brighton High School
Who: Individuals from all career fields welcome!

If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Tanya Clark at clarkt@brightonk12.com for more details.

Brighton Area Schools Student Wellness Information

As a part of the BAS Strategic Plan, we are always trying to find ways to maximize and support student growth. One of many ways we do this is through the Brighton Area Schools App. This app can be downloaded for free on iTunes and Google Play. It is loaded with resources for students and parents. In addition, consider using the "Your Best, Your Growth, Your Future" part of the app to submit a goal and receive 1:1 support and feedback to help you achieve it! The app will also allow you to receive notifications on what is happening throughout BAS and be updated on future events and information.

December 2nd Scheduling Presentations

On December 2nd, grade level counselors and grade level principals met with students in their social studies classes about scheduling for next year and what options may be available to them. They also received their scheduling sheets to write down their selections for next year that will be signed by their teachers and signed by their parents by December 11th, and turned into their English teachers on Friday, December 12th. Students will need to enter their course selections into their StudentConnect account prior to turning in their sheet (directions are provided on their scheduling sheet).

Grade level counselors will be emailing students this presentation if they have not done so already. The email sent to current Juniors is provided below:

Greetings Class of 2027 Parents/Students. I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. I wanted to share that Mr. Evans and I met with 11th grade students through their Social Studies class on Tuesday 12/2 to discuss senior year scheduling options.

Here is a link to the Powerpoint Presentation we discussed (slides 47-65 are applicable to current 11th graders).

Here is an overview of the scheduling timeline:

  • Friday, December 5th - Curriculum Day with students visiting possible electives of interest (alternate bell schedule attached). Students are encouraged to review elective options emailed to them prior to Thanksgiving break.
    • Here is a link to curriculum videos for students/parents/guardians to view ahead of time.
    • Here is a link to the curriculum day elective schedule (students must pick 4 options to attend).
  • Thursday, December 11th - Signing Day for classes requiring a signature and course numbers must be entered into StudentConnect by 11:59pm. Students - please do the best you can with choosing classes and I can make adjustments to your course requests during our individual meetings in January/February.
  • Friday, December 12th - Individual student scheduling sheets due to English teachers.
  • January and February - I will meet with all students individually (all 440 of them) regarding their course selections, questions, and graduation requirements to provide appropriate guidance to ensure they are enrolling in classes that meet their remaining grad reqs as well as their future path. If needed, I can make changes to their course requests during this time!

If students were absent on 12/2 or didn’t attend the presentation due to NOT having a Social Studies class, they can attend a make-up presentation in the Media Center on Monday, 12/8 at the start of 3rd hour!

Xello Post Secondary Planning Presentations for Juniors

Please see the message below from this year's Junior counselor, Mrs. Caverly regarding Xello presentations that took place this past week with their social studies classes:

On November 19th and 20th, I met with 11th-grade students in groups through their Civics/Econ/AP Gov/AP Macro classes to work on their EDPs (Education Development Plans) in Xello. During these sessions, we addressed standards set by the State of Michigan by completing the following 4 tasks:

  • Researching and Saving 3 Colleges
  • Researching and Saving 3 Scholarships
  • Completing the Choosing a College Lesson
  • Completing the Work/Life Balance Lesson

While most students finished in the allotted class time, those who were absent or unable to finish should complete them by December 19th. They can do this by logging into their BHS student Xello account.

Here is a copy of the presentation shared with students. In addition to the Xello tasks, this presentation also includes valuable career/college/post-secondary resources, such as:

  • Michigan's Public Universities Guide to Admissions
  • Michigan College Guide Fall 2025
  • BHS Post Secondary Planning Smore Page

Though the assignments focused primarily on college preparation, in accordance with state standards, we also discussed other post-secondary options, including: apprenticeships, military, trades, and the workforce.

Lastly, students received a copy of their current transcript! We dedicated time discussing important elements of their transcript, including their cumulative GPA, class rank, total credits, and the courses they are enrolled in for 2nd semester.

Should you have any questions about this, please feel free to reach out to me (caverlyj@brightonk12.com).
