Weekly Words with Wakefield Weekly Words with Wakefield

Creeping in on you in Week 54 of Words With Wakefield. I was hanging out with the elementary students, learning all about dandelions. We even made some to show how they blow in the wind. Most people see dandelions and run to their garage to retrieve the roundup and mowers. Or, if you have a little kid left in you, you pick one and start the phrase “momma had a baby and the…” - I will keep it PG!

Why do we hate dandelions so much? I think it is something that’s been passed down and we blindly jump on the dandelion hate wagon. Yes, some see a weed but maybe we should take a closer look and actually get to know the dandelion.

When we do, we find a plant that is highly nutritious and offers numerous health benefits. Every part is edible and rich in vitamins, you can even make dandelion soup! While we try to eliminate this so-called weed, dandelions are good for your lawn by pulling nutrients up from deep in the soil to support other plants. I think you get the point!

It’s easy to follow the crowd, even when it comes to something as small as a dandelion. But maybe the better approach is to slow down, stay curious, and learn before we decide. In the end, we need to make our own findings before passing judgment.
