Insights Report: Early Career Teacher (ECT) Support at RTS

At The Richmond upon Thames School (RTS), our commitment to the next generation of educators is central to our mission. This insight outlines the robust, multi-layered support framework designed to transition Early Career Teachers (ECTs) from novice practitioners to confident, inspiring classroom leaders. By blending statutory requirements with a vibrant school culture, we ensure our ECTs don’t just survive their first years—they thrive.

As the Professional Coordinating Mentor (PCM) and Deputy Head in charge of the Quality of Education, overseeing the ECT programme is one of my favorite roles. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing our ECTs develop into confident practitioners who truly inspire and nurture the students they teach.

1. Mentorship: The Foundation of Growth

We believe that high-quality mentorship is the cornerstone of professional development. Our program features:

  • Qualified Mentors: All ECTs are paired with experienced, qualified teachers.

  • Fresh Perspectives: To encourage objective feedback and a focus on pedagogy over content alone, mentors are typically assigned from different subject areas.

  • Protected Time: Weekly mentor meetings provide a dedicated space for reflection, goal setting, and troubleshooting in a supportive environment.

2. Professional Development & Frameworks

Our training program is meticulously aligned with Department for Education (DfE) policies and delivered through prestigious partnerships:

  • Lead Provider: UCL Institute of Education.

  • Delivery Partner: Wandle Teaching School Hub.

  • Dual-Track Training: ECTs receive a blend of statutory in-house training—tailored to the specific needs of our students—and external sessions that connect them with a broader network of peers.

3. Observational Learning

RTS promotes an "open door" culture. ECTs are provided structured opportunities to observe excellence in action:

  • Specialist Observations: Deep dives into subject-specific mastery.

  • Cross-Curricular Insights: Observing teachers across the spectrum of subjects to understand diverse classroom management styles and pedagogical approaches.

4. Holistic Integration into School Life

We encourage our ECTs to see themselves as more than just instructors; they are vital members of the RTS community. Our ECTs have made significant impacts by:

  • Organising extra-curricular activities: Leading trips, visits, and inviting guest speakers.

  • Whole-School Events: Taking active roles in high-profile events like World Book Day and Science Week.
