From the School Nurse 🩺
YOU MUST PICK UP YOUR CHILD’S MEDICATION! Medication must be picked up by a parent/guardian by the end of the school day on or before June 11th. All remaining medication will be properly disposed of.
Reminder for next school year:
If your child will require medication during the 2026/2027 school year, a new Medication Authorization form or a new Action plan needs to be completed. You can find the link to these below.
*If your child has a chronic medical condition that may result in an emergency situation (Seizures, Anaphylactic Allergies, Type 1 Diabetes, Asthma, etc.), please inform your child’s school and ensure you have an up to date medical plan on file prior to the start of the 2026/2027 school year. A new plan is required on a yearly basis or if any changes are made to the plan throughout the year.
Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you next year!
Thank you, Jessica Kightlinger, LPN

Almost There—Only 18 Library Books Left!
The good news is that students have been returning books at an amazing pace! Just a few weeks ago, more than 500 library books were still checked out. Thanks to the efforts of our students and families, that number is now down to just 18.
Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, siblings, and other family members who helped search bedrooms, bookshelves, backpacks, and every other possible hiding place for overdue library books.
Now we need just a few families to take one more look so that every library book can be returned and ready for next year’s readers. Please check backpacks, bedrooms, cars, and favorite reading spots at home for any Hornung library books.
If you are unable to locate a book, we ask that families pay to replace it. You should have received an email listing any books still checked out to your student, along with information about how to submit payment.
Thank you for helping us celebrate reading while also teaching students the importance of responsibility and caring for the shared library books that so many children enjoy. Together, we can ensure these books are available for future readers.
Thank you,
Mr. Turner
Summer Reading Challenge!
Summer reading fun is almost here!
This week at Hornung, I’ve been talking with students about all the exciting opportunities waiting for them this summer at the Brighton District Library! The BDL Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic way to keep kids reading, learning, and having FUN all summer long.
From June 7 - August 8, students can participate in the “Unearth a Story” Summer Reading Challenge by reading books, writing reviews, and completing fun activities to earn badges and entries for weekly and grand prize drawings! Families can track progress online or through the Beanstack app, and younger readers can even pick up a paper tracker at the library.
The Brighton District Library also has an amazing lineup of summer programs and events for kids and families like storytimes, crafts, hands-on activities, and so much more! There’s truly something for everyone.
Summer reading helps students stay sharp, grow their imagination, and discover new favorite books, and the prizes make it even more exciting! I hope all of our Hornung families will sign up and join the fun this summer.

Reporting Absences in Parent Connect
Parent Connect has a quick and easy way to report your child's absence.
- Log into Parent Connect
- If you have more than one child, select the student who will be absent.
- Click Report Absence on the top right corner.
- Enter the date(s) of the absence.
- If your child will be gone all day, check the All Day box so it applies to both morning and afternoon. Or, if your child will only miss part of the day, enter the specific times.
- Finally select a Reason and make sure to include in the Notes why your child will be absent (illness, doctor visit, vacation etc.) If your child has been diagnosed with something specific (like COVID, strep throat, pink eye, flu, chickenpox, etc.), please mention that in Notes.
Reporting Absences on the Attendance Line
Another option for reporting an absence is to call the Hornung attendance line at 810-299-4454. When you leave a message, please include:
- Your child's name
- Their teacher's name
- The date(s) they'll be absent
- The reason (illness, doctor visit, vacation, etc.)
If they haven't been diagnosed but do have symptoms, let us know what those symptoms are.
Please Email kurtinaitisc@brightonk12.com with any attendance questions.
McKinney-Vento Act Support
Brighton Area Schools supports students experiencing temporary housing through the
McKinney-Vento Act. Assistance is available for school needs, housing referrals, clothing, and
more. If you know a student in need, please contact your building principal or district liaison
Starr Acromite at 810-299-4040.
Just in case clothes JK-4th Grade
Parents please pack an extra set of weather appropriate clothes in your child's backpack each day. Bathroom accidents, spills, mud puddles or unexpected messes can happen, and having a spare outfit will help keep your child comfortable throughout the day. This way, we can take care of any changes at school, and you won't have to make a trip to bring them. Thank you for your support!
