Principal's Corner Principal's Corner

On Wednesday our amazing PTO treated the staff to breakfast in the staff room. There were mini quiches, muffins, and yogurt with fruit. Having food provided is always appreciated and our thanks go out to all of the parents that were a part of our breakfast treats!

We come to school in the morning with a frost on the ground and a nip in the air, but after lunch we are enjoying some beautiful fall weather. Please note that in the morning, we don’t have the sun poking over the treetops so it is quite cool. Some children are asking to borrow gloves. Sending children in with some layers is helpful for us.

We are still running our food drive. You can send in any non-perishable food item with your child in the morning. If you drop off or pick up your child you can simply hand it off in the pick up line! We will extend this drive through the Conference Day on 11/3.

If you have not signed up for a conference time, please reach out to your classroom teacher and get one scheduled.

On Monday, November 9, at 6:30 I will hold my next “Evening Event”. It will be a math night. I will spend some time talking about “new math” and “common core math” and explain the what and why of math today. While the grown ups are meeting with me I plan on having a space for children to play some math games. I will ask for an RSVP so that I have enough things and seats prepared. An email is fine.

*On Wednesday, November 18, will be our next OLL time. If you are interested in helping please let me know!

* This week the results of the Lion’s Club Vision screening went home. Please look for it in their folders.

Kindergarten Happenings! Kindergarten Happenings!

Here is the Kindergarten snapshot for the week! :)

This week in Reading skills we introduced the letters: g & i and worked on short vowel discrimination between a, o, & i. Students are starting to get the hang of sounding out CVC words and connecting letters to the sounds they say as we practice daily. They seem to be very excited that they are becoming beginning readers!! In Reading knowledge we did our five senses assessment and moved into unit 3: Underdogs and Heroes: Stories. Some classics that you might know are: Chicken Little, The Three Little Pigs, and Three Billy Goats Gruff! We even introduced different variations of these stories during read aloud time.

In Math we continue number exploration with more than, fewer than and same. Students are becoming masters of this! We have been connecting quantities & numbers, counting out objects, and drawing groups of objects. We continue to focus on the numbers 1-10. Science and Social Studies has been a very busy time for us. We had so much fun working on the five senses with apples! We made great observations, asked good questions, and did graphing to see which apples we liked the most and least. We introduced Scholastic News for the first time and it just so happened to be all about An Apple Surprise! We continued our learning about community helpers on top of that, focusing on Veterinarians and Dentists!

1st & 2nd Grade News! 1st & 2nd Grade News!

First and Second Graders have enjoyed our busy week! In science, students continue to be scientists by observing our classroom pumpkin, Lil’ Jimmy. They have been journaling changes they see, making predictions, and even have made up a few silly back stories for him. In math, Second Graders surprised themselves with how quickly they can add double digit numbers. We focused on using our knowledge of place value to solve equations. We used to connect cubes and base 10 blocks to decompose the numbers in our math problems. Students learned that this can make harder problems easier to solve. In First Grade, we continue to practice our “three read strategy” before solving math story problems. This helps to visualize what is actually happening in each problem before deciding how to solve them. They are becoming more confident and independent each day. In literacy, both grades practiced new selling patterns of some tricky sounds, and we continued to practice our Tricky Words. Sadly, this was our last week of our fall Cornucopia program. The students enjoyed cleaning up the garden and reviewing all they had learned. The worked together to harvest the last of the vegetables and herbs. Our final project was to make a salad as an entire class to share. Cornucopia has been a fun and exciting program for our class, and we look forward to them returning in the spring!

3rd & 4th Grade Bulletin! 3rd & 4th Grade Bulletin!

Grades 3 & 4 have begun to learn about the BIOMES of the world. We had a little introduction to what they are and just started to talk about the Forest biome. We have all agreed that on Friday instead of our usual science work, we will have a science experiment. This adds a new level of excitement to the end of our work week.

We have been talking about the importance of learning our multiplication facts, including the many ways that we can do mental math.

In writing we have shifted our stamina in writing from how many words to how many sentences. We are focusing on some smaller details now. We are remembering that the word I is never a lower case letter. We also are working on going back and rereading what was written. I am also encouraging all readers that we need to expand our reading to include novels and not always picture books, even if they are nonfiction.
