After 32 years in education, I am retiring. While it makes me sad to leave the best little school in the whole wide world, I am looking forward to new adventures. I will be keeping track of all these precious children and families through Facebook and seeing you around town.

Mrs. Lindie Roden will be taking the helm as the new Principal at CSE. Please give her the same warm welcome you gave me in 2022. The Assistant Principal has not yet been named.

☀️ Summer Behavior Tips for Families

Helping Kids Stay Busy, Engaged, and on Track

Summer is a time for fun, relaxation, and making memories—but it can also be challenging to keep kids engaged and following expectations. Without the structure of the school day, behaviors can sometimes become more difficult to manage. The good news: a little planning goes a long way!

🌟 Why Summer Can Be Tough

Many children thrive on routine and structure. During summer break:

  • There is more unstructured time

  • Screen time can increase

  • Opportunities for boredom (and frustration) grow

When kids have too much downtime, behaviors like arguing, defiance, or restlessness can increase.

⚡ Get That Energy Out!

Keeping kids active is one of the best ways to support positive behavior.

Simple ideas:

  • Daily outdoor play (even 20–30 minutes helps!)

  • Walks, bike rides, or trips to the park

  • Water play (sprinklers, water balloons, splash pads)

  • Backyard games or scavenger hunts

💡 Kids behave better when their bodies have a chance to move!

🕒 Keep a Simple Routine

You don’t need a strict schedule—but a loose routine helps kids know what to expect.

Try this structure:

  • Morning: chores + learning time (reading, writing, math games)

  • Midday: free play or outdoor activity

  • Afternoon: quiet time or creative activity

  • Evening: family time

Consistency builds confidence and reduces power struggles.

🎯 Set Clear Expectations

Kids need reminders of what is expected—even in the summer.

  • Review 2–3 simple rules (ex: Be respectful, Be responsible, Be a team)

  • Give clear directions

  • Follow through with consistent consequence

🧠 Keep Minds Busy

Boredom often leads to behavior problems.

Engaging activities:

  • Arts and crafts

  • Reading time (library visits are great!)

  • Building, puzzles, or STEM kits

  • Board games or family challenges

👍 Catch the Good!

Positive attention goes a long way.

  • Praise effort and good choices

  • Use simple rewards (extra playtime, choice of activity)

  • Notice small successes

💬 “I love how you started that without being asked!”

❤️ Final Thought

We all know there are moments when staying inside too long makes everyone feel overwhelmed. You’re not alone! Kids do their best when they have opportunities to move, explore, and stay engaged.

A balance of activity, structure, and encouragement can make summer smoother—and more enjoyable—for everyone.
