A Message from the Principals
by Caitlin Bianchi, Allen Brook School Principal
Take care of yourself.
Take care of each other.
Take care of this place.
Students and adults at Allen Brook School and at Williston Central School are focusing on these schoolwide agreements throughout the school year and we are off to a wonderful start!
This week, I want to highlight how we “take care of each other” at Allen Brook School. While there are examples of this happening every day at ABS, one that stands out was a second grader and her friend taking the time and care to walk her brother to his kindergarten class on his first day of school. The pride that the older students felt as they provided this support and the visible relief that the kindergartener felt with them by his side made everyone around them smile. While this example illustrates the way individuals take care of each other, there are also many examples of groups in our community taking care of each other. One such example is when we had our schoolwide assembly in September. Second graders presented our kindergartners with bracelets and special notes welcoming them to Allen Brook School. This collaborative project helped the second graders understand the value of being leaders and taking care of their younger peers and it helped our kindergarteners understand that they are part of our whole school community. Beyond these special moments, there are countless opportunities for students and adults at Allen Brook to show that when we consider not only our own needs and wants but also those of others, we work toward building a successful school community.
We also build a successful school community by expanding beyond our students, staff, and faculty to our families. We know that when we have parents, guardians, grandparents, and other community members supporting and getting involved with our school activities, we are growing our ability to “take care of each other.”
This year we are starting an ABS volunteer group that we are calling “The Buzz Brigade.” Some folks had a chance to sign up for the Buzz Brigade at our Open House. We are looking for volunteers to help with a variety of activities and tasks throughout the 26-27 school year. Activities will range from reading to students during their library classes, to helping with schoolwide buzzy celebrations or other special events, to supporting WFAP events, to completing clerical/creative tasks at home and more. When you join the Buzz Brigade, we’ll send emails out to you letting you know of the latest opportunities as they come up and you can choose to volunteer if it works for you. If you’d like to learn more, please email Laura Giglotti at lgiglotti@cvsdvt.org. All volunteers will need to complete our volunteer paperwork.
Thank you for your continued partnership! Have a great weekend!

This Week's PUP Quick Tip!
Default Plan vs. Plan Change Q & A
Q: What's the difference between a Default Plan and a Plan Change?
A: Default Plan: Your student's typical dismissal/after-school plan each day. Can be different for each day of the week or the same for all 5 days. For example, your student could ride Bus F home on Monday & Tuesday, Take Bus C to GMTC on Wednesday, Bus H to UDC on Thursday, and attend Part 2 Friday. Set it up, and it's good to go!
Plan Change: When your child's dismissal plan deviates from the Default Plan that is set for that day. Some examples of a plan change would be: being absent, being picked up rather than riding the bus, leaving early, going home on the bus instead of to Part2 or vice versa.
Q: OK, the Default Plan is set, but for the next 3 weeks on Wednesday I will pick them up after school instead of Bus C to GMTC. Do I change the Default Plan?
A: No, this is a short term change for a limited timeframe, not a default change. You can enter this for all 3 wednesdays at once by clicking on the dates and following the dismissal instructions.
Tap Change > select the date(s) > click the Dismissal Plan option > Select Correct Option* from the list > add a note if needed > Tap Submit
⭐You may need to scroll up/down to see the full list of dismissal plan options
Q: I need to pick up my students early, do I just select Pick Up?
A: When picking up early early, you should select Early Dismissal, indicate the time and note who will be picking up.
Important Information & Updates
Wanted: People looking to make a difference
A new school year at Williston Central School is underway, and you can feel the energy and excitement in the building the moment you walk through the doors. What would add to the positive vibe?
You!
Even with the high level of commitment and drive of WSC’s faculty and staff, our students would benefit from additional support from trustworthy adults who provide a consistent presence in their lives. As we begin the school year, we’re actively recruiting caring, committed adults in our community to join our Connecting Youth Mentoring Program and help make a difference in the lives of Williston students.
Our school-based CY Mentoring Program is one of the few in the state. We connect adults with middle-school students, and each pair commits to spending one hour together each week of the school year. Each mentor-mentee pair decides how to spend that time. There is no set playbook. That time often includes conversation, game-playing, reading, crafts, baking, and exploring shared interests. It’s not overtly about improving academic performance; it’s about building confidence and a stronger sense of self. It’s about being there for each other.
A good mentoring relationship is a two-way street. Both the mentor and the mentee value the time they spend together and learn from each other. With a successful track record of more than 25 years, the CY Mentoring Program proves again and again that a bit of informal tutelage from a respected adult helps make a difference in students' lives. Over the years, Williston's mentors have inspired growth, boosted young people's trajectories, and strengthened the entire community.
And here’s a little secret: CY mentors find the experience immensely rewarding.
Williston students come into the program in two ways: they ask to be included, or parents or school personnel refer them because they think their child will benefit.
Mentors need only to raise their hands and volunteer. Sound doable?
Williston’s CY Mentoring Program has enjoyed incredible backing from several community organizations, including the Williston Federated Church and the Rotary Club of Williston-Richmond. Both organizations have supported the program through financial donations and mentor recruitment. Additionally, hundreds of other selfless individuals – no doubt your friends and neighbors – have mentored a student over the years.
Are you ready to make a difference in the life of a youngster? Do you want to be part of the verve and positivity coursing through our school?
Please consider joining us!
