May 2, 2025

Dear Cohasset Public Schools Community,

Welcome to May! This is, by far, the busiest time of year in schools. We have academic events, social events, celebrations, and more. Please take a moment to review the dates to know at the bottom of this newsletter and mark your calendars for what is meaningful to you. After that, buckle up, because June 17th will be here before we know it!

May is also a time when we celebrate so many of the folks who work in the Cohasset Public Schools and who make your and your children's school experience what it is. So, in this newsletter, I'd like to give a huge shout-out to our Administrative Assistants, our School Lunch Heroes, our Principals, and our Teachers!

Administrative Professionals Day (April 23)

All of our Administrative Assistant who greet our community with smiles on their faces ready to help you with what ever you need. Thank you to Lisa Gowell, Collette McElhinney, Pam Hunter, Deb Simmons, Lisa Tokarz, Linda Moscardelli, Theresa Miller, Jennifer Souretis, Karen Crowell, Jeri Ballard, and Lisa Portolese. We are lucky to work with you and grateful for all you do!

National School Lunch Hero Day (May 2)

Our Cafeteria staff! If you've heard about how great the cafeteria food is in Cohasset, then you know about our amazing cafeteria staff. They are as kind as they are good at their jobs. They have, in the last few years under the leadership of Vinicio Cordon, our Director of Food Service, flipped the idea of what school lunch can be on it's head. From freshly squeezed orange juice to veggie and hummus Crudités to burrito bowls to the best pizza in Cohasset, you are flipping the idea of what school lunches can be on their head. Thank you!

National Principal Appreciation Day (May 1)

I want to thank Mrs. Gaudette, Mrs. Sullivan, Mr. Mills, Dr. Salas, and Mr. Scott for everything they do to set the tone, build the culture, and drive instruction in our schools. Being a principal is a 24/7 job where you juggle everything from making curriculum decisions to managing leaks to supporting a crying student all within just a few minutes sometimes. I am so grateful that we have these five people leading our buildings and making our schools great.

Teacher Appreciation Day (May 6)

And, we would be no where without our amazing teachers. Over and over since I started in my role I have had students and parents share stories about how much the teachers in Cohasset care about their students. I have, in my walkthroughs, seen how hard they work and in meetings, listened to them as they continue to find new ways to meet the needs of their students. Our teachers love their work and love their students. They are committed to their own and our students' success. As a parent and the Superintendent, I am incredibly grateful for the amazing staff we have in this district.

Ever Onward,

Sarah

Spring is For the Arts! Spring is For the Arts!

Over the course of the next few weeks, each of our schools will be celebrating our visual and performing arts. Deer Hill's Favorite's Night was the first of these events. Congratulations to Mrs. Berman and all of the Deer Hill students for their amazing works of art.

CPS Summer Book Club: Never Enough CPS Summer Book Club: Never Enough

As we continue to talk about how to keep our children safe, happy, and healthy, we will keep talking about the impact of social media and need to add to that the achievement culture that exists in Cohasset. Throughout the strategic planning process we heard from our students though surveys, forums, and in one-on-one conversations that they feel an extreme pressure to achieve at high levels in all areas of their lives. What does this mean for them? What does it mean for us as parents and educators? They are asking us to talk about it, so we are. Join us in this important discussion and pick up your copy of Never Enough at Buttonwoods.

Purposeful Play & Responsible Risk Taking: May Challenge Purposeful Play & Responsible Risk Taking: May Challenge

Keeping up with our Anxious Generation purposeful play and responsible risk taking challenges, I am inviting you to join in on our May activities. This month, our challenges are:

Purposeful Play Challenge

Let's get creative this month! May is here and so are the flowers and planting season. Plant a garden together. Build the plan, head to the store together to pick out what you're going to plant, get messy in the dirt as you dig, and then watch as what you did together grows. Celebrate your success. Bonus points if you plant a new fruit or vegetable that your child tries as a new food once it's planted!

Responsible Risk Taking Challenge

This month let your child plan a solo adventure within safe boundaries according to their age. Let your child walk to a neighbor’s house, deliver a letter to the mailbox by themselves, ride their bike to somewhere of their choice, or stay home alone. Independence builds confidence!

What Expertise Can YOU Offer Our Students? What Expertise Can YOU Offer Our Students?

Cohasset is a community comprised of experts in a wide variety of fields. In order to deliver more authentic, hands-on, project-based learning experiences to students, the Cohasset School Committee, in collaboration with district leadership, is working to develop a "Community Resource Guide." This Guide will serve as an invaluable resource to our classroom teachers and school staff, as it will provide them with a comprehensive database of all stakeholders and interested parties who are willing to share their background, experience, and expertise in furtherance of our mission to Empower Students to Improve Communities.

There are many different ways in which one might participate in this endeavor, including classroom presentations, hosting or facilitating field trips, creating shadow or internship opportunities, or assisting with project-based learning experiences.

If you are willing to share your unique talents, passions, interests, and/or expertise, please click this link to fill out a brief interest form. We thank you for your willingness to volunteer your time in order to deliver impactful learning experiences to CPS students.

Onward and Upward,

Your School Committee

We are also excited to announce that the Cohasset Public Schools has a new Facebook page. Our District used to rely on Twitter to share news, announcements, and updates, however, we are shifting away from that platform and will now be sharing similar information via Facebook. We invite you to click here to Like and Follow our page to stay on top off all of the latest CPS news.
