Welcome! 🍎

Dear St. John Families,

Welcome to the 2025–2026 school year! I am truly honored to serve as the new Superintendent/Principal of the St. John School District—home of the Eagles! As we prepare to begin this new chapter together, I want to warmly welcome all of our students, families, and staff back to school.

I hope your summer has been filled with rest, joy, and meaningful time with loved ones. Now, as we turn our attention toward the year ahead, I invite you to join me in building something extraordinary. Together, in our close-knit and caring community, we will create a school year filled with growth, connection, and success.

St. John School is a place where every student is known, supported, and inspired to soar. We believe in the potential of every child, and our dedicated staff is committed to creating a learning environment where students feel safe, valued, and challenged to achieve their very best.

As we launch this school year, we will focus on strengthening relationships, rebuilding trust, and promoting a culture of belonging. We recognize that transitions can come with mixed emotions, and we are placing a strong emphasis on social-emotional learning, collaboration, and teamwork. Our goal is to make every student feel confident and connected, both inside and outside the classroom.

We also believe that education is a shared journey. The partnership between school and home is essential for student success. We encourage you to stay connected, get involved, and join us in making this a year to remember. You can stay up to date by following our school announcements on Facebook and through our official school communication channels.

I am filled with optimism for what lies ahead. With open hearts and a shared commitment to excellence, I know we will accomplish great things—together. Let’s make this year one where every Eagle has the chance to soar!

Project Being Completed: New Roof Drain System at St. John School!

We’re excited to share that the roof drain system upgrade at St. John School is now being completed!

This important project was done in partnership with the Town and in response to an order from the Washington State Department of Ecology. Our roof drains are now being disconnected from the sanitary sewer system and redirected to a new storm sewer, helping to protect our environment and improve the town’s sewer infrastructure.

The new system enhances our school's long-term sustainability and reduces the risk of drainage issues during heavy rain. We appreciate the community's patience during construction and are proud to have started this project with minimal disruption and lasting benefits for our students, staff, and town.

Thank you for supporting St. John School as we continue to invest in a safe and healthy learning environment for our Eagles!

Makenzie Naught- 1st Grade

My name is Makenzie Naught and I grew up in Colfax, Washington in a family of farmers. I competed in high school rodeos, and was a basketball cheerleader. Shortly after high school I met my husband who is from Rosalia, Washington, which is what led me to this area of Whitman county. I did my student teaching in St. John during the 2024-2025 school year, and absolutely fell in love with the school and all of the students. When we are not working we enjoy going to Cougar games, and spending time at the lake. My husband and I have a 2 year old little boy who we wanted to be able to go to a rural school where I also teach, and I believe that St. John is the perfect place. I am so eager and excited to start this journey at St. John School District, and look forward to meeting new faces!

Michelle Zuckerman

My name is Michelle Zuckerman. After beginning a career in engineering, I transitioned into education to encourage more young women to enter STEM fields. I enjoyed teaching middle school and created innovative teaching methods, including pioneering a student led science podcast in 2008. I grew up outside Boston, Massachusetts and was fortunate to travel abroad during high school. I lived in France and Brazil for a semester each. I also lived in Germany for five years. Today, I prefer pine trees and wheat fields to the hustle and bustle of city life. When I am not hiking with Astraeus, a Siberian Husky who loves to talk, I am gardening, reading or skiing. I am honored to be selected for the Business Manager position because it is an opportunity to leverage my strong background in engineering and project administration to support the educational mission of the St. John School District. My extensive experience as a principal investigator on grant-funded projects, which required meticulous budgeting, timeline management, and financial reporting, directly aligns with the core responsibilities of the role. I am motivated to apply my expertise in fiscal management to ensure the district's resources are effectively and strategically allocated to serve its students and staff.

Meet Our New School Counselor – Mrs. Shields! We are excited to welcome Mrs. Shields as the new School Counselor for the St. John School District! We are thrilled to have her on board to help our Eagles soar and reach new heights this school year!

This upcoming school year will be my third year with the district, but I've been in education for nearly 14 years. Over the course of my career, I have been blessed to work in public school settings, both in-person and virtually. I have primarily worked at the middle school and elementary levels. While I love being in the classroom, I recently felt like I was being pulled in another direction. I wasn't sure what that direction was until this past fall when I connected with Whitworth University's graduate program for school counseling. After talking with the program director, I decided to apply and was accepted. I started classes this summer and can confidently say I have found what my heart has been trying to tell me for years. There is still a lot for me to learn, and my only request is that you give me grace and patience through this transition. I'm excited for this opportunity and look forward to serving our students and community as your new school counselor.

Heath and Wellness

At St. John School District, we know that growing up isn’t always easy. Today’s students face an incredible amount of pressure—academics, social expectations, friendships, family dynamics, and personal identity—all while trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in the world.

That’s why we’re proud to partner with Palouse River Counseling, a local mental health resource that offers caring, professional support to students who may be struggling. Whether a student is experiencing anxiety, sadness, stress, or simply needs someone to talk to, this outreach program is here to help.

Palouse River Counseling provides confidential services that are designed to meet students where they are—emotionally, mentally, and even physically, when possible. Their team understands the unique challenges teenagers face and works to equip them with healthy coping strategies, emotional resilience, and the tools to navigate life’s ups and downs.

Sometimes, just knowing that there’s someone to talk to can make all the difference.

If you or your child is feeling overwhelmed or could use a little extra support, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we’re building a school community where no one has to face life’s challenges alone.

Cell Phone Policy

📱 St. John School Cell Phone & Smart Device Policy (2025-2026)

📌Objective: To ensure students stay focused on learning, while maintaining a respectful balance between school expectations and family communication needs.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students at St. John School,

As of August 27, 2025, no student cell phones, ear buds, air pods, or Bluetooth headphones will be allowed to be in use in classrooms during the school day, for ANY reason.

🔒 During School Hours (8:00 AM – 3:00 PM):

  • Students may use their phones during lunch, recess, and to check messages between classes. However, students must turn off phones before entering class and may not be late due to phone use. Phone use must still be respectful and non-disruptive.
  • Phones must be silenced and stored in backpacks or designated classroom phone holders during instructional time.
  1. No phone use during class unless:

  • A teacher gives permission for academic purposes and with prior approval from administration.
  • An emergency situation arises (as determined by staff).

🧑‍🏫 Teacher Discretion

· Teachers may incorporate phone use into instruction when appropriate (e.g., Kahoot, research, QR codes).

· Repeated non-compliance may result in phone being held in the office until the end of the day.

📞 Communication with Families

· Parents/Guardians: If you need to contact your student during school hours, please call the main office.

· Students: If you need to contact home, ask to use the classroom or office phone.

🧠 Why This Matters

· Studies show phone use in class reduces focus, increases anxiety, and lowers academic performance.

· Reducing phone use helps build attention skills, fosters real connection, and improves classroom culture.

🤝 Student & Family Support

· This policy is designed to respect student independence and preserve the integrity of the learning environment.

· We encourage families to talk with students about the benefits of minimizing phone use during school.

📝 Consequences for Misuse

· 1st time: Verbal reminder and redirection.

· 2nd time: Phone is held until end of day.

· 3rd time: Parent/guardian will be contacted; student may lose phone privileges during school.

Thank you for your support,
