Chapter Snippet
âI think God likes to shake things up when he pulls the trigger,â the sheriff said. âHell of a thing, reallyâand a hell of a task for our coroner. Separating those two bony sacks of meat mustâve been one nettlesome son of a bitch.â
Montana might as well have been another world, especially a place like Fishbone.
Not that heâd ever really existed in Boston. Heâd only been pretending. The whir of the tires settled into a low vibration, dulling the edges of what lay ahead. Robert glanced at the rearview, half expecting the faces of the dead to stare back. To each his own. Some stayed with you; others you learned to let go. If only that were ours to choose.

Chapter Snippet
When Clara woke that morning, anxiety curled up beside her. By late afternoon, under the weight of the thick summer heat, it had soured into something worseâfear. She pulled into the back lot of the police station. Trading her car service for a rental was a painful but necessary evil. After all, one couldnât skulk around in a Mercedesâit simply wouldnât do. In a dollar-store town like this, only the cars bought on low wages went unnoticed. Economy all the way, she thought rather darkly to herself. Anything else would stick out, just like one of those proverbial, sore thumbs everyone talks about. She was hardly a surveillance trailblazer. Still, she sent it out into the universe. Maybe Iâll fashion a pair of designer detective goggles. Couture or not, my boyâs in trouble. She needed answersâsimple as that.

- Famous for hosting notable guests, including Charles Dickens and John F.
Kennedy.

âą The hotel offers ghost tours and has a rich history that attracts both history buffs and those interested in the paranormal.
The 3rd floor reports of paranormal activity. Room 303 guests report strange shadows throughout the room and the bathtub water would just turn on randomly by itself. Management eventually turned this room into a storage closet for unspecified reasons. Some speculate that it was because a guest committed suicide in this room; but no one knows for sure.
Stephen Kingâs â1408â was inspired by the events occurring in Room 303
Charles Dickens
"This Literary Wonder" didnât just pop in for one night only at the Omni Parker Hotel. On his second tour of the United States, he chose to make Boston, and the Omni Parker House, his home base. He rented out two suites of rooms on the third floor of the Omni Parker for about six months between 1867-1868.
Visitors to the Omni Parker unfortunately wonât be able to see or stay in the same rooms Dickens did, since the hotel was rebuilt after Dickensâ lengthy stay. However, you can still see two items of Charles Dickens memorabilia on display at the Omni Parker: the door to Dickensâ suite, and the mirror from his room.
The door to rooms 138-139 can be found displayed behind glass in the Omni Parker Hotel, with a plaque identifying it as the door to Dickensâ room. During Christmastime, staff at the Omni Parker hang a wreath in recognition of Dickensâ role in reviving the Christmas holiday with his famous novella, A Christmas Carol.
In the Omni Parker Hotel mezzanine, you can also see Charles Dickensâ hotel mirror, in front of which he supposedly practiced his famous dramatic readings of his works. The mirror is enormous, with an intricately carved wooden frame.
The plaque underneath it reads: âMirror from the rooms at the Parker House occupied by Charles Dickens 1867 & 1868 authenticated by the Boston branch of the Dickens Fellowship.â âLook closely and see reflections of Dickens as he practiced a âChristmas Carol.ââ
Some people believe that the Omni Parker House is haunted by the ghost of Charles Dickens. Thereâs an urban legend that if you stand in front of Dickensâ mirror and call his name, the elevator bells will chime. Some people have even claimed to have seen Dickensâ reflection in the mezzanine mirror.
There have been other reports of Dickens haunting the Omni Parker. Some people report smelling cigar smoke on the third floor, where Dickensâ rooms were located. There have also been reports that the elevator will frequently call at the third floor, the floor on which Dickens stayed, even when no one pushed the 3rd floor button.
The Giggling Granny
Nannie Doss, an American serial killer who killed four of her husbands, two children, two sisters, her mother, two grandsons, and a mother-in-law from the 1920s to the 1950s.
Nannie Doss may have seemed like âa loving grandmother with a charming smile,â but investigators began to suspect there was something sinister behind that smile after every member of her family mysteriously died, one by one, over the years.
Dossâ childhood was heavily impacted by her âabusive and demandingâ father, Jim Hazle. Born in 1905 in Calhoun County, Ala., Doss was said to have âhad an unhappy and difficult childhood,â as her father largely kept her out of school to work on the familyâs farm. He âforbade his daughters from wearing makeup or dress clothesâ growing up.
Doss slammed her head into a metal bar when aboard a train. The injury led to âsevere headaches,â possibly impacting her view of life as a whole.
Doss had five husbands throughout her life, first marrying at the encouragement of her father when she was 16 years old. She and her first husband, Charley Braggs, had four daughters between 1923 to 1927 while living with his mother, leading Dossâ becoming increasingly stressed. Two of her daughters suddenly died in 1927 from suspected food poisoning, prompting Braggs to become suspicious and leave his wife, taking his oldest daughter Melvina with him.
He was the one surviving husband throughout Dossâ life.
Doss went on to marry four more men â Frank Harrelson, an âalcoholicâ who died after ingesting rat poison 16 years into their marriage; Artie Lanning, âan alcoholic womanizerâ who also died after ingesting rat poison soon before Doss allegedly burnt down their house with his mother inside; Richard Morton, who died three months into their marriage after drinking coffee spiked with arsenic, and Samuel Doss, a âNazarene minister who disapproved of Doss's romance novelsâ and died a little more than a year into their marriage from a similar arsenic poison found in his coffee.
Dossâ final husbandâs death raised suspicion. An autopsy revealed a âmassiveâ amount of arsenic in his system.
In the end, Doss admitted to murdering 11 of her family members. She was nicknamed the "Giggling Granny" because she kept bursting into fits of laughter while confessing.

Joe Hill writes like heâs carving runes into bone, and King Sorrow proves heâs still sharpening the blade.
At its center is Arthur Oakes, a linguist, a dreamer, and a student at Rackham College in Maine, a place of frosty winters, beautiful buildings, and a legendary library. Arthurâs quiet idyll, and his budding romance with the brilliant Gwen Underfoot, shatters when a local drug dealer forces him into an unthinkable crime: stealing rare books from the college library to protect his incarcerated mother.
Cornered and terrified, Arthur turns to his closest friends. What follows is wonder colliding headfirst with horror. Wealthy, reckless Colin Wren proposes a solution ripped from nightmare and myth: using the infamous Crane journal, bound in human skin, to summon a dragon. Alison Shiner, the fierce McBride twins Donna and Donovan, and the sharp-minded Gwen donât hesitate. Friendship, after all, is a powerful kind of magic.
But dragons demand their due. The creature they summon, King Sorrow, binds them to a pact that will echo for years. One sacrifice every year, or become his next meal.
Hill turns this premise into something exhilarating and devastating. King Sorrow is about friendships forged in terror, love sharpened by fear, and the true cost of sacrifice. The horror is vivid, the wonder intoxicating, and the heartbreak unavoidable.
By the end, the book doesnât just linger. It leaves you changed, carrying its weight and its wonder long after the last page.
King Sorrow holds wonder and love, terror and betrayal, heartbreak and exhilaration, and leaves with my heart in its claws.
Hope you all have enjoyed my newsletter.
