2nd Quarter Progress Reports - Visible December 8th
I know it seems like the 1st Quarter just ended, but the 2nd Quarter is halfway over, and that means it is time for 2nd Quarter Progress Reports. These progress reports are visible on Monday, December 8th in both ParentConnect and StudentConnect. Please encourage your students who may need to play catch up to do so before break so they can take a few days off. Otherwise, the break is a great opportunity for them to get back on track without new work being assigned! The 1st Semester will end on Friday, January 23rd.
12 Days Before Break - 10 Days to Go!
We still have 10 days left in our 12 Days Before Break spirit days. In case our students missed it, a copy of the list of days can be found here. Just a little bit of a fun way to finish off the calendar year!
Electives Curriculum Day
We wanted to thank our students for the time and effort they put into planning for Friday's Electives Curriculum Day presentations and the focus they showed in their sessions. We were fortunate enough to be in the halls as students were coming and going, talking about potential classes and what they were excited to hopefully be able to take next year. We have a short video that highlighted some of what we were able to see in these sessions. If you would like, you can view it here.
2026-27 Student Scheduling Information
2026-27 Student Scheduling Timeline
It is hard to believe, but it is already time to start thinking about the scheduling process for the 2026-27 school year. We want you to have the updated timeline for planning purposes. More details will be provided to you as they become available, but here is the shell of the schedule for you:
- Tuesday, December 2nd - Grade level scheduling meetings (held with students' social studies classes)
- Friday, December 5th - Curriculum Day with students visiting possible electives of interest (alternate schedule attached, *Seniors will have a late start on this day)
- Thursday, December 11th - Signing Day for classes requiring a signature and course numbers must be entered into StudentConnect
- Friday, December 12th - Individual student scheduling sheets due to English teachers
Curriculum Videos and Core Class Conversations
As we have in years past, core teachers will have discussions with their students about what classes are available to them and any corresponding recommendations by Signing Day (12/11) to allow students to sign up for appropriate courses. Core teachers will also share curriculum videos for their own department with students so that they can learn more about all of the course options available in their specific subject area.
*Elective curriculum videos can be found here* They have already been shared with students as well.
Zekelman Holocaust Center Field Trip (9th Grade)
All 9th grade students will once again be taking a field trip to the Zekelman Holocaust Center with their English classes. These trips will take place over two days. We want you to have this information so you/your student can plan accordingly. If your student has Mrs. Clark or Mrs. Sawyer for English 9, they will be attending the trip on Monday, December 8th, and students with Mrs. Awdish, Mrs. Reichhold, or Mrs. Elliott will be attending on Tuesday, December 9th.
Upcoming FAFSA Night - December 9th at 6 pm
On December 9th at 6pm in the Media Center at BHS, we are hosting a workshop to help seniors and parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for financial aid for their first year in college. As a public service, a financial aid representative from Oakland University is facilitating the workshop. Please register using the link below and follow the instructions to prepare.
Please register HERE!
Before you attend the FAFSA Workshop:
Student applicants and each parent contributor should each create their own FSA ID at studentaid.gov (if a user does not have a social security number, they will need to create their account at least three days in advance.)
Determine which parent(s) will contribute information to the FAFSA if there are multiple households to consider- https://studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/is-my-parent-a-contributor.jpg
Record each studentaid.gov login in a secure location or on Step One of the FAFSA Worksheet.
Review the FAFSA Checklist to gather information necessary to complete the FAFSA.
If you are unable to join the workshop on the date/time selected, you can access OU hosted workshops open to anyone regardless of college choice on the Financial Aid Events website.
Advisory Plan for Wednesday, December 10th – Distribution of PSAT/SAT Practice Results
As you know, all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders in attendance on November 19th completed a PSAT or SAT practice exam during Advisory. As educators, we recognize that formative assessments are only as meaningful as the feedback students receive. With that in mind, next Wednesday, December 10th, students will have the opportunity to pick up their individual score reports from their Advisory teachers.
What you need to know:
- Score Report Delivery: Each student’s results will be delivered to their Advisory classroom so that it is available for pick up on Wednesday.
- Advisory Expectations (Dec. 10):
- Teachers will distribute score reports to their Advisory students.
- Students will still be allowed to travel; however, students can stop by their Advisory teacher's classroom to pick up their slip if they would like to do so. Otherwise, they will receive it the next time they are in their assigned Advisory class.
- Teachers may use the time for review or discussion of the test and its results with students, but it is not required.
Additional Information for Students and Families:
Students and parents will receive a digital copy of the exam and an answer key with explanations so they can effectively review results as they deem appropriate.
Next Steps:
Overall schoolwide results on the PSAT and SAT practice tests will be shared with staff. We will discuss these trends further at our upcoming staff meeting as part of our schoolwide SAT school improvement goal. This will provide information that can be used to build upon the standardized testing prep work that is already taking place in classes and will continue throughout the year.
We will be repeating this process later on this year, prior to this spring's standardized testing for 9th through 11th grade students.
Snow Day Information and School Closings
Earlier this month, Dr. Outlaw shared information in his monthly newsletter about some of the potential variables that are considered when determining if school will be closed or not. His message also included information about how that information can be communicated and what it means when school is cancelled. This is important information to be aware of in order to maximize everyone's safety and the information can be found here.
Field Trip Reminders
We have a number of field trips coming up between now and the end of the year. In preparation for students going on these trips, I just wanted to share a couple important reminders:
- In order for students to be allowed to go on a field trip, we need to make sure they have completed all portions of the required permission slips prior to attending the field trip, including any parent signatures. These permission slips travel with teachers on their trips as they include important information they may need should any issues arise.
- If your student will be needing to take medicine with them on a trip, please encourage them to talk with our medical staff well in advance to allow them to plan accordingly. It can be very difficult to accommodate multiple students coming down the morning of to manage very important medicines. Any assistance with this would be much appreciated.
Upcoming BHS Staff Holiday PTO Event - Donations Needed
We will be celebrating our BHS Staff this Holiday Season with a Festive Woot Woot Treat Train and a Fun Gift Card giveaway. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1X06PFRLNA52V?ref_=wl_share

Tutoring Options at BHS
National Honor Society's After School Tutoring is underway! If your student is in need of extra help, we encourage them to reach out to the teacher first, as they will be the best resource, but have shared this option with them as well, so please feel free to do the same. NHS students will be available to tutor students in room B-1 from 2:30-3:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tutoring is free of charge. For more information about after school tutoring or for a list of NHS students who are willing to tutor, go to https://bit.ly/BrightonNHSTutoring Please note: our after school tutor will leave at 2:45 if no students have arrived by then.
In addition to After School Tutoring, we have another tutoring resource available for our students. Every year, the BHS Counseling Office generates a list of adult tutors that can be shared with students and families as an additional option if After School Tutoring doesn't work for them for any reason. These tutors have reached out and asked to be on our tutoring list as a resource to BHS students and families. They have self-reported their qualifications. All adults who are not BAS teachers have passed a background check. It is the responsibility of the students and families to find the best tutor for them, arrange meetings, and make payment.
The 2025-26 Tutor List can be found here.
Career Chats (Previously Lunch N Learns)
With moving Advisory out of lunches, we changed the name, but the idea for Lunch N Learns is back, just with a new name! We will be hosting Career Chats this year during Advisory and could use your help. If you, or anyone you know, may be interested in connecting our students with more information on potential career opportunities, we would love it if you could review the information below or share the following information with anyone who may be interested!
Brighton High School is looking for community partners!
We are seeking volunteer presenters to share their careers and experiences with students during our 2025-26 Career Pathways Presentations. Our "Career Chats", previously known as Lunch N Learns, are a great opportunity to inspire the next generation and help students explore future career options.
When: During Advisory on Wednesdays from 9:18-10:16 am (dates vary)
Where: Brighton High School
Who: Individuals from all career fields welcome!
If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Tanya Clark at clarkt@brightonk12.com for more details.
Together, we can help students connect their education to real-world opportunities!

Brighton Area Schools Student Wellness Information
As a part of the BAS Strategic Plan, we are always trying to find ways to maximize and support student growth. One of many ways we do this is through the Brighton Area Schools App. This app can be downloaded for free on iTunes and Google Play. It is loaded with resources for students and parents. In addition, consider using the "Your Best, Your Growth, Your Future" part of the app to submit a goal and receive 1:1 support and feedback to help you achieve it! The app will also allow you to receive notifications on what is happening throughout BAS and be updated on future events and information.
Weekly Wellness Tip from BAS - "Put Down the Glass"
Each week, we will be sharing out a weekly tip/resource with our families. This week's tip:

Recent Events at BHS
December 2nd Scheduling Presentations
On December 2nd, grade level counselors and grade level principals met with students in their social studies classes about scheduling for next year and what options may be available to them. They also received their scheduling sheets to write down their selections for next year that will be signed by their teachers and signed by their parents by December 11th, and turned into their English teachers on Friday, December 12th. Students will need to enter their course selections into their StudentConnect account prior to turning in their sheet (directions are provided on their scheduling sheet).
Grade level counselors will be emailing students this presentation if they have not done so already. The email sent to current Juniors is provided below:
Greetings Class of 2027 Parents/Students. I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. I wanted to share that Mr. Evans and I met with 11th grade students through their Social Studies class on Tuesday 12/2 to discuss senior year scheduling options.

Xello Post Secondary Planning Presentations for Juniors
Please see the message below from this year's Junior counselor, Mrs. Caverly regarding Xello presentations that took place this past week with their social studies classes:
On November 19th and 20th, I met with 11th-grade students in groups through their Civics/Econ/AP Gov/AP Macro classes to work on their EDPs (Education Development Plans) in Xello. During these sessions, we addressed standards set by the State of Michigan by completing the following 4 tasks:
- Researching and Saving 3 Colleges
- Researching and Saving 3 Scholarships
- Completing the Choosing a College Lesson
- Completing the Work/Life Balance Lesson
While most students finished in the allotted class time, those who were absent or unable to finish should complete them by December 19th. They can do this by logging into their BHS student Xello account.
Here is a copy of the presentation shared with students. In addition to the Xello tasks, this presentation also includes valuable career/college/post-secondary resources, such as:
- Michigan's Public Universities Guide to Admissions
- Michigan College Guide Fall 2025
- BHS Post Secondary Planning Smore Page
Though the assignments focused primarily on college preparation, in accordance with state standards, we also discussed other post-secondary options, including: apprenticeships, military, trades, and the workforce.
Lastly, students received a copy of their current transcript! We dedicated time discussing important elements of their transcript, including their cumulative GPA, class rank, total credits, and the courses they are enrolled in for 2nd semester.
Should you have any questions about this, please feel free to reach out to me (caverlyj@brightonk12.com).
