Focus on Student Learning: HHES Students Learn about Volcanoes with Columbia River Maritime Museum
Second graders at Hockinson Heights Elementary School have been learning about volcanoes and a special classroom visit brought that science unit to life. On January 27, the Columbia River Maritime Museum visited each second-grade classroom to give a presentation on volcanoes in our region - most notably, Mt. St. Helens. After the presentation, students rotated through three hands-on activities that focused on learning about earthquakes, exploring rocks, and - of course - volcanoes!
This learning experience was made possible by Museum in the Schools, the Columbia River Maritime Museum’s educational outreach program that brings museum learning directly to classrooms. The program is offered at no cost to schools in Clark County, helping make engaging, hands-on learning more accessible for students.

Budget Bite: $3.5k Rebate from Strategic Energy Management Program
This year, Hockinson School District received a $3,500 rebate from Clark Public Utilities’ Strategic Energy Management Program for an LED hallway lighting retrofit at Hockinson High School. The project replaced aging fluorescent fixtures with energy-efficient LED lighting in hallways near the auditorium, gymnasium, and music rooms, improving visibility while reducing long-term electricity use.
This upgrade reflects HSD’s long-standing partnership with Clark Public Utilities. Clark Public Utilities and Washington State Department of Commerce (DOC) grants, initiatives, and rebates have provided the district with over $1 million in energy efficiency project support since 2021. By leveraging partnerships, Hockinson School District continues to stretch local dollars while maintaining safe, well-lit, and welcoming learning environments for students and staff.

Enroll, Enlist, Enter the Workforce: HMS Woodshop Students Revamp the School's Trophy Case
Out with the old and in with the new! Recently, 8th-grade students in the HMS Woodshop program revamped the school’s trophy and display case by swapping out glass shelves for more secure custom-built wooden shelving. Students handled the project from start to finish and gained real-world experience at every step—from taking precise measurements and cutting boards to fit, to sanding, sealing, leveling, and installing the finished shelves inside the case.
Thanks to Mr. Klodt's Woodshop students, the trophy case is ready to showcase student achievements for years to come. Fun fact: The most recent addition to HMS’ display case was the state's 2025 Culture Kickoff Award, which they won for the second year in a row!
