Leading to a Better Community Leading to a Better Community

We believe that everyone is able to make a positive difference to the world around them. We can each volunteer our time, or donate our money, towards worthy causes. Our individual efforts are small, but they matter.

We can achieve even more when we bring people together. For over 100 years Altrusa clubs have collected members from varying occupations and lifestyles, all sharing an interest in community service.

We enjoy the friendship, fun and satisfaction that comes from working together for the benefit of others. Each club develops a program that is tailored to local needs, undertaking a variety of hands-on service and fundraising projects each year. One of our shared goals as an organization is to improve literacy, which we believe is the key to opportunity.

Through Altrusa activities we develop our leadership skills in a supportive environment. We welcome new ideas and aim to provide enough flexibility so that our members can give their time in a way that works for them.

Message from the President Message from the President

As summer winds down and September arrives, we’re excited to embrace a month dedicated to literacy and learning! Altrusa International of Coachella Valley is thrilled to highlight key dates in September that celebrate the transformative power of reading and education.

Library Card Sign-Up Month: A Gateway to Endless Possibilities

September marks Library Card Sign-Up Month—a perfect time to remind everyone of the magic and opportunities that come with a library card. Libraries are not just a place to borrow books; they are community hubs for learning, discovery, and growth. From online resources to storytimes and educational programs, a library card opens the door to a world of knowledge and imagination. If you don’t have one yet, now is the ideal time to sign up and explore what your local library has to offer!

National Read a Book Day: Finding Joy in Every Page

On September 6th, we’ll celebrate National Read a Book Day—a day dedicated to the joy and importance of reading. Whether it’s a cherished classic, an inspiring biography, or a thrilling novel, reading enriches our minds and broadens our perspectives. We encourage everyone to take a moment to pick up a book, find a cozy spot, and lose yourself in a good read.

International Literacy Day: Empowering Through Education

September 8th is International Literacy Day, a day to reflect on the critical role literacy plays in empowering individuals and transforming communities. Literacy is more than just reading and writing; it’s a fundamental skill that enhances personal development and opens doors to new opportunities. As we celebrate this important day, let’s recognize the power of literacy in fostering lifelong learning and supporting a more equitable world.

Happy Reading!

Join Us in Making a Difference: Book Drive for Palm Springs Unified School District

In honor of these literacy celebrations, we are hosting a book drive to benefit the Palm Springs Unified School District Early Childhood Learning Program. This initiative aims to provide young learners with access to high-quality books and resources, helping to ignite a lifelong love of reading from an early age.

How You Can Help:

  • Donate Books: We’re accepting gently used or new children’s books suitable for early learners. Reach out to one of our club members to arrange for pick up.

  • Spread the Word: Share our book drive with friends, family, and colleagues. The more people who know, the more books we can collect!

  • Volunteer: If you’d like to help organize and distribute books, we’d love to have you join our team. Contact us at altrusacoachella@gmail.com for volunteer opportunities.

Children's literacy is crucial because it lays the foundation for lifelong learning and academic success. Early literacy skills not only enhance cognitive development but also empower children to explore their world, express themselves, and build the confidence needed to thrive in all aspects of life.

Together, we can make a meaningful impact on young readers and support their journey toward literacy and success. Let’s make September a month of celebration, action, and community spirit. Thank you for your continued support and for joining us in making a difference!
